Zimbabwe's finance minister announced yesterday that: 'Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 in government coffers.'

'The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment', Mr Biti admitted.

The stunning confession about the country's poor financial state is the culmination of years of ruinous economic policy by Zimbabwe's despotic President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled the southern African country since independence from Britain in 1980.

Daily Mail

To be fair, $217 is probably more than the US, UK or French governments had in the bank last week.

That's more than I usually have left over after paying the bills.

Then again, I don't have a whole country to take care of, just the wife and three kids. Although the way my wife spends money, it sometimes feels like it.

LoL my thoughts exactly.. Since usa and many other countries are billions and trillions in debt I bet they would kill for a 217 dollar surplus

I am just wondering how much money TPTB in Zimababwe have in their own personal (hidden) bank accounts? I think it is a lot more than $217.00.

I'm just saying.

Ahh yes... Zimbabwe. Where men are men and everyone is strong! ....so they can carry the sheer weight of the currency to pay dinner with.

Oh, but they did try and solve that. It just didn't work so hot in the long run.

It sounds like they may not have recovered after all, eh? They may be in for a second helping of hyperinflation if they make the same bad decisions a 2nd time. The people in that nation deserve a break. Maybe Mugabe for life hasn't been such a hot idea, eh?

But the countries mentioned still have billions in government coffers.. To be left with $217 is ridiculous, whether they are in debt or not.. Which im sure they are along with most countries in the world.. its just how the system works.. everyone is in debt somewhere along the line..

Exactly.

Printing money just causes inflation that reduces the value of peoples' savings and fixed incomes such as private pension schemes.

Quantitative easing is a stealth tax by any other name. More to the point, stealth robbery.

Well, today is their lucky day. I am a US billionaire seeking to transport my vast fortune out of the US. I would gladly share 30% of my total wealth to the government of Zimbabwe if they would help me transfer my billions out of my bank and into a Zimbabwe bank. If they would just send me a certified check for $13,000 to cover the legal expenses and lawyer fees ...

Im not going to lie, i laughed at the 2 jokes above but in all seriousness, this is terrible. There shouldn't be this kind of suffering in 2013. Corrupt governments are commonplace across the globe

I went to the Mail link. I see that Zimbabwe is so poor, they had to photoshop a corsage for the finance minister.

I dont feel bad for africa they have more natural resources and gold then anyone else in the world, they are to busy fighting each other and letting white people tell them what to do to get their heads out of their asses and become a world power.

Its time for ALL countries to start trading on hard goods and leave behind fake dollars backed by nothing. We should be pushing for more of a bartering system all over, everyone works to help everyone rather then just themselves. There is no reason why we can't build huge gardens and people will work them in exchange for food, people will supply the materials in exchange for food. We need to get back to a society of producers, people making clothes, people making all sorts of things rather then having eveything made in china and sold in the US..

Yes it would be a hard thing to figure out and yes everyone would have to pull their fair share but in the end it will be better for everyone. There should be NO money its the worst thing ever created, everyone should have a home, everyone should have a pieces of land to call there own and we have the land the GOV owner hundreds of millions of acres of land all over the US. With roughly 300M people in the USA the GOV could give every person 1acre of land easily. We could setup community gardens, everyone that gets food from the garden has to work their fair share of time and effort in the gardens, if they are physically capable, if not we can find something else they could help with and if they are that bad off then we should take care of them.
