Israel Strikes Convoy On Syria-Lebanon Border

news.sky.com

Israel has struck a weapons convoy on border of Syria and Lebanon, according to security sources.

Israeli jets carried out the strike overnight on the convoy which was said to be coming from Syria, and was in the area of the Lebanon-Syria border.

An unnamed secuity source told the AFP news wire: "The Israeli air force blew up a convoy which had just crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon."

The source did not give a precise location for the attack or saying what the convoy was carrying.

I wonder who/what it was?

And the fact that Israel has declined to answer means that *something* at least has occurred.

I also wonder if there will be any retaliations - either from Lebanon or Syria or both? (Especially if Israeli jets did venture into Lebanon's airspace as one of the links below says...

This is a developing story - so, stay tuned...

UPDATE: It's apparently, a "weapons convoy"...

Nice to see Israel striving for peace as always. Lebanon should just start shooting the planes down as they cross over the border.

There have been intelligence reports of Syria's chemical weapons on the move to that area. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Maybe in an effort to work towards peace, they should've waited until the chemical weapons were raining over their airspace?? /sarcasm

Striking another countries forces in a third country and getting away with it can only be done by Israel. Every other country would have to answer for an unprovoked act of war to the U.N., the USA, the EU and the NATO.. but not Israel.

What I'm surprised about is that, if it was in Syria or Lebanon - why has the country in which the strike took place not retaliated? After all, it was an unauthorized incursion in another country's airspace.

Now, I'm not anti-Israel or anti-Islam or anti-anything. However, regardless of what the convoy was carrying - it could have been active nuclear weapons for all I care - I am very interested in the unauthorized incursion into another country's airspace.

Namely, if the air-strike took place in Lebanon/Syria, why has/did Lebanon/Syria not retaliated/retaliate with military action. It was an unauthorized incursion into their airspace - such incidents are normally met, first with a warning and then military action. How were the Israelis able to freely fly over another country's airspace without any resistance or whatnot?

Maybe this convoy was a decoy?

Maybe some of the chemical and biological weapons have been distributed among terrorist proxies?

We'll see...

The same reason Iran won't admit anything happened at their nuclear facility last week.
GUILT
To retaliate would acknowledge that it happened.
It happened because they were doing something illeagal.
To acknowledge it would require the cover up of what they were actually doing...wich is a lot harder than just ignoring the action and moving forward and try to get away with illegal activity in another way.

Its like a drug dealer going to the cops because the neighborhood watch stopped a deal from going down.

a terrorist state is above international law as it answer to no one.

the usa will make the un and other international institutions meaningless as usual.

the juvenile delinquent state does as it pleases as always, no surprise.

and americans will ask, why do they hate us so.

hope and the middle east are contradictions, the chaos will grow and fester.
israel is surrounding itself with failed states, and it's american and british allies are on the brink of bankruptcy.
the future will be interresting if nothing else.

in ten years, the world will remember sadam hussien, assad and arrafat as the good old days, when they still had someone to talk to.

They have tried to fight off Israel many times. Lebanon is riding the edge
Of being labbled Terrorist nation which an attack on Israeli jets would guarantee.

There is no love for Israel anywhere in the middle east. If the US and Britain didnt back
Them we wouldnt be reading this thread.

Its a shame, they are a real hurdle in the way of peace all the while claiming
To be a peaceful democracy. There will be no middle ground with Israel. they
Will either destroy every other country in the ME or they will be destroyed themselves
They will never cooperate with anyone in the ME because they want to rule it all
..... For their own saftey of course. Israel doesnt care if millions die as long as they
Get everything they want with no compromise.

Yep, other news sites such as the BBC and whatnot have quoted a Syrian army spokesman saying that a weapons scientific research site has been hit...

The next few hour to the next few days should be interesting. If the hit(s) was/were in Syria, the response of Iran should be interesting - after all, they said that they would treat an attack on Syria as on an attack against Iran...

Well the story's taken a large turn:

"Syria Claims Israeli Jets Hit Military Facility"

Syrian state TV says Israel targeted military research centre, just hours after reports of an attack on an arms convoy emerge.

An Israeli airstrike has hit a military research centre north west of Damascus, the Syrian army has claimed.

In a statement carried by the state news agency, SANA, the Syrian army's general command said: "Israeli fighter jets violated our air space at dawn today and carried out a direct strike on a scientific research centre in charge of raising our level of resistance and self-defence."

The claims followed earlier reports that Israeli jets had hit a convoy allegedly carrying weapons to Lebanon's Hizbollah movement. According to Sky sources, the attack took place just inside Syria.

Sky's Middle East Correspondent Sam Kiley said: "We know from Sky sources that the Israelis have conducted an airstrike involving three sorties by 12 planes - a very heavy airstrike, a high level of intent - on the village of Nabi Chit, near the bigger Syrian town of Zabadani.

"It's inside Syrian territory, therefore representing a possible strategic escalation.

Well....

If this is true (i.e. Israel hitting a military research centre/hitting convoy on Syrian soil or both), then habitual rules of engagement, regardless of what is going on in Syria, would be to embark on some sort of punitive/retaliatory/revenge attack or whatnot. In other words, Syria would reply with a military response, no? However, as it seems that no civilians have been killed or whatnot, this would be far-fetched, no?

Considering what is going on in Syria and Lebanon.... this could be absolutely anything.

Anyways, Lebanon is not going to shoot down Israeli planes. Bad plan...

Why would Syria commit suicide? Or Lebanon for that matter.

For all we know the US did it and is just blaming Israel because everyone already hates Israel anyways

When dangerous countries start getting weapons that are as disgusting as chemical weapons...we have to make sure those weapons don't get put to use.

It comes down to - someone had to do it and retaliation would be pointless.

Not even Syria with their much more extensive air defences have achieved that in relation to Israeli aircraft in recent years. The Lebanese, in regards to fighter aircraft and anti-aircraft defences, are in no position to stop Israeli overflights.

I had heard the Russia secured Syria's chemical weapons?

That was Debka creating a story for website hits. The reality was the Russian Foreign Minister said no such thing. The Russian Minister was simply noting that Syria itself has concentrated the stockpiles in more secure locations.

Syria still in 'control' of chemical weapons: Russia MOSCOW: Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that the Syrian regime was still in control of chemical weapons stockpiled at several locations in the conflict-ravaged country. "So far according to our information, which correlates with Western data, the weapons are under control," he told journalists as he flew back to Moscow from an EU-Russia summit in Brussels, quoted by the Interfax news agency. "The Syrian authorities have concentrated these stockpiles in one or two centres. Previously they were scattered around the country," he said.

From the Syrian state news agency. They are saying it was a building near Damascus.

Army Command: Israeli Warplanes Violated Syrian Airspace and Bombarded Scientific Research Center in Damascus Countryside DAMASCUS, (SANA) – The General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said that Israeli warplanes violated Syrian airspace on Wednesday dawn and bombarded directly a scientific research center responsible for raising the levels of resistance and self-defense in Jamraya area in Damascus Countryside.

Not a chance of Iran retaliating. The Syrian-Iranian defence pack was also in place when Israel last conducted an air strike inside Syria during 2007.
