Maybe they are recording everything we do on the internet, saving it in crystals, and after we wipe ourselves out they will have every ounce of information we humans ever put out, cause it's almost all online now. Probably will be used in some classroom somewhere in space long after we are gone to show what kind of crazy things the universe can spawn....

Of course ET is internet savy. They have probably been monitoring our news programs since TV was invented. Like I mentioned before, since they probably have someone assigned to watch 24/7 they were probably aware of the reactor leak at Chernobyl as soon as anyone was, which is why they acted to contain it.

If we went to a planet that had TV and Internet we would be studying it too. It is a great way to study the society you are watching. I am not saying ET would bother to interact on the net, but they could if they wanted to. The black ops section already has control over the media. That may be enough for them. But then again I think ET is more about research than control.

I guess they could be hacking into someone's wifi and getting on a local private network... in that case I find it awesome that aliens know what 802.11b and 802.11g protocols are.. what an awesome coincidence!

Or maybe they just are snaking down a gigabit ethernet cable and hijacking someone's free router port? =)

This task would be trivial for an interstellar species???

Why would it be trivial?

Really? .. so this assumes

1. They figured out wifi protocols
2. Then they figured out how to negotiate a connection
3. Then they figured out how to negotiate for an IP address which means they figured out the TCP and DHCP
4. Then they figured out how how to use the DNS information, which means they also now understand UDP and DNS protocols
5. Now they have to use it .. so they figured out HTTP post/get .. and then how to understand HTML, Javascript, JSON and all that as well .. they also made their own flash player and Java system too ..

I was being over simplistic.. there's far more to it, and it has to be done in a particular order.. I don't care if they traveled light years.. you don't just understand this stuff that easily.. even if we mastered light speed travel and traveled to an alien world.. do you think we're going to understand how to jack into their computer system and understand whatever protocols they are using? the idea is a bit silly to me.

I don't know many programs on the TV that explain the minute details of the TCP/IP stack, or the tons of other protocols that exists .. the only way this silly idea would be plausible to me is if you say they a are pretending to be human and going to college to get their masters in networking / computer engineering .. but first you have to convince me they've been here at all ..

Yes it's a fun idea to imagine ET up there wanking to internet porn or something.. but beyond that it's just pure fantasy =)

I'm going to go into imagination land here, so bear with me. My assumption, is that they would possess much greater computing capability that we would. It would be simple for their computer systems to analyze, and configure a way to communicate with ours. Heck if they've been probing us, why not take a sample of the local electronics for reverse engineering?

It's actually really easy to get a new IP address.
Also I know people that get free wireless internet by connecting to some sort of neighborhood hubs (I don't know the techy details) but it's fairly easy for people to fake wireless credentials. It is a lot more like stealing cable than you think.
If you think about it, for an interstellar ship the size of three aircraft carriers (as described in the OP), it could very well be with in their capabilities to simply start with observing the flow of electronic signals. All you need are sensors that pick up those frequencies and quality mapping technologies to analyze their flow through the systems. So they could, conceivably, detect exactly which frequencies are being transmitted to connect from one hub or another, exactly which frequencies are being used by local devices like mobile phones and PCs, and then simply mimic them. Sure there might be a slight difference in the signal need to copy due to so called individual credentials like IP addresses, but after noticing a few connection patterns and seeing how they differed in that specific portion of the transmission, you could simply come up with a prediction model of what "individual" info you would need to alter to insert into your copied connection transmission (a lot like how hackers make-up software key generators so that you can make up a fake key to get full version software.)

I certainly didn't need any provider like timewarner to grant me accesss. I'm connected at a shopping center with complex-wide free WIFI, all I needed to get on here was a made-up email address (I didn't even have to confirm, so basically all you need are a string of [email protected]). Had I reset my IP to something new right before connecting, I'd have been a stranger, an entirely new entity on the networks. There would be no evidence as far as I know, nor any way to stop me, from accessing all the web or being identified.

Another thing to consider, which would make it even easier for them, are the complexities of interstellar navigation, they might very well have a supercomputer on board to assist with astronavigation, or even a quantum computer, which would make mapping the data signals of the Earthlings and connecting to their totally exposed communication network, as simple as telling the computer to "map the information network those satellites are broadcasting on, then patch us in a connection" a quantum device could have it done in a matter of seconds, a smart computer, probably 24 hours or less.

So, miniatus, open your miniature mind to what's easily possible & stop limiting your species. Defend yourselves for "Christ" sake! --Chess is only fun when the enemy can think on a sophisticated level, imagining all the possibilities and addressing them. So if your going to get better, you had better learn to see what's possible.

Sure they have watched internet porn. Probably took them a whole 20 minutes to gather all they needed from that. There are only so many possible positions.

They are studying us. That is what you do when you go to a different place and hide behind the shadows.

If they are advanced enough to build craft to get them here then they could probably read and interpet our language 50 years ago. Remember, they are the ones who gave us the chip. They would have no trouble knowing how computers work. The military could have given them everything you talked about without them doing anything.

But reading the net and posting on the net are two different things. I see no reason why would they bother interacting with us that way in the first place. Much better to do it face to face.

Let's spice this up a bit. So what if the Aliens have been the one's hacking into the people's Web Cam's??? Dun dun dun... Creepy

What if the Aliens are Anonymous~!!!! Dun dun dun hence the mask.... I think i'm on to something here....

Dude, Your own people are already doing that to you! Terabytes in a thumb-drive, and a facility the size of a city!
They already have ALL of your data! The hard part was cracking the basic encryption, but they built a supercomputer now that can handle that too and it's part of the new facility.

This is a very interesting read for Earthlings and "Aliens" alike check it out, very informative: Wired.com: The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center (Watch What You Say) By James Bamford

Yeah I know.

If there is ever a UFO hovering over that facility, you know they grabbed our info...

It really doesn't seem that far fetched if we are being visited that they would do such a thing, after all, as you just pointed out, our own Gov already does. Perhaps they are the aliens

Listen mini, if a 15yearold can devastate the security protocols of iphones and allow 1.5 million people to "jailbreak" their iphone in a week and a half, than aliens can figure out how our communications technology works. Meet Comex, The 19-Year-Old iPhone Uber-Hacker Who Keeps Outsmarting Apple or When he was 15

And if we had a ship that was the size of 3 aircraft carriers with mini-ships coming out of it at will, and we could cloak our big ship from the planet we were visiting, don't you think our people on board might include technology professionals

The basics of all computers are the same, 0 and 1, between that lever and reading English on your screen are some highly predictable infrastructure elements that are designed in ways what predictable because they are designed to be optimal. In other words, because we try to make things the best way we can to do jobs, and because its all based on original 01 frameworks, the protocols needed are essentially predictable functions that would probably be mirrored on thousands of other civilizations developing pre-quantum-state computers. Sure the programming languages would be unique but the one only has to recognize the relevant patterns to understand their function. A simple example being an email address in Japanese. I wouldn't know what it was if it weren't for the highly predictable pattern of @ and ".", not that's an over simplification but hopefully you understand what I'm saying.

FURTHERMORE: It would not be hard to learn every last detail of how to hack our systems simply by listening into the transmissions of youtube. There have to be hacking videos on everything, since all the information is going out in waves that can esssentially be grabbed by any antenna and picked up, (as opposed to a direct connection through wires or a beam) just as a hacker can listen in to any connection he wants by receiving the wave of the area around him, so too could people in orbit receive every single video being transmitted, and take their sweet time learning our systems, languages, protocols, and everything. It's all just out their for the listening, constant streaming of whatever the Earthlings are listening to and watching all that info can be picked up and read, and in a short time (of say two years) mastered (by individuals of other species) enough to really do some major infiltrating.

With all the things you could worry about in the world you pick this? Good for you. No worries then about our economy? Gun control? Teenage pregnancies? Just aliens stealing our Wifi. I will personally create an avy for them on my Wii.

That's the thing. Why would anyone want to use their router in wireless mode? doing that you are broadcasting, end of story. I have one other computer connected by cable to the router so not wireless. My connection is by land line, but even so, it's only a little more secure...perhaps not.

what if they were looking on the net for someone of high enough intelligence to communicate with,
a person "worth" talking too
