(Reuters) - Iran has successfully launched a live monkey into space, the state news agency IRNA said on Monday, touting it as an advance in a missile and space program that has alarmed the West and Israel.

Poor monkey, lo0l ..

Will be interesting to see is this true or just one more media propaganda from Iran ..

IRNA said the monkey was sent into space on a Kavoshgar rocket. The rocket reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles) and "returned its shipment intact", IRNA reported.

The Islamic Republic's state-run, English-language Press TV said the monkey was retrieved alive.

hmm, i wonder if "intact" means alive, or just in one piece? anyways congrats to iran, maybe we are a little closer to us all exploring space together, and hopefully not mutually assured destruction.

Poor monkey? People are going to spend up to a million dollars for a seat in a civilian space launch. This monkey got it for free and probably got a banana for the trip.

Does anybody know exactly how many unfortunate animals have had this "honour" thrust upon them? Did the Americans keep a reliable record of all the animals they sent beyond our atmosphere before they deemed it safe enough to send a human, or were they just keeping an eye on the Russians and waiting for them to deem it a risk worth taking?

People may crack jokes at the monkey's expense but I can not imagine the fear this poor sentient creature must have gone through. Also coming back 'intact' sounds to me that he was dead but in one piece or they would have said 'alive and well'...

You've got to feel sorry for their first test subject...

mind you, we Brits have nothing to be proud of, after the indignities we put one of Rocket Monkey's relatives through.

Oh I did not know this ..

Poor animals ..

n 2010, Iran successfully sent a rat, turtle and worms into space. But an attempt to send a monkey up in a rocket failed in 2011.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced in 2010 that the country planned to send a man into space by 2019.

This is good news, as the more in space the merrier. Now that the U.S. isn't launching anymore other countries have to pick up the slack.

Hopefully the monkey will get a ticker-tape parade. Along with the rat and turtle and other guys who went up earlier. Hurray for primates!

For spying for Israel and the West. Iran came to this conclusion by stating the Monkey flew over Israel...

Apparently its part of the same group as the shark (Egypt said received training in Israel to attack foreigners) and the pidgeon (Pakistan arrested and accused it of spying for India).
