I can't believe you can't see that this most likely does more for people like myself who can trace their family in this country back to colonial times then it does for an illegal that got here yesterday. Had this been done 7 years ago I'd have an extra $13,800 in the bank and my insurance per 6 months wouldn't have gone up an extra $44.

So basically, your personal interest in losing money to an accident with a criminal should support circumventing the law to coddle those criminals? That's pretty shaky logic.

They shouldn't be here at all....if illegal..

Is that all you can say?

Is that all there is to it, a law?

So if the law changed tomorrow you suddenly would have nothing against migrants?

You obviously agree with the law, right? So obviously you are not being honest, and the law is just an excuse.

I feel like you're missing the point... Why do ANY illegal immigrants deserve any rights in this country? If you come here illegally, you are a criminal. The only rights you deserve then is the right to board a plane back to the country you cam from... Illegal immigrants bleed this country of it's resources and now we're looking to make their life a little easier?

Before you know it, more illegals will be coming to the state of Illinois because they know they can get license here. Obviously, my state is being immigrant friendly with this new law which is a big let down to some of us who live here...

To get a license they will need to give an address. Why not have ICE go by each address picking each one up and deporting them? Isn't that their job anyways?

No. There are illegal immigrants here. They shouldn't be here, but they are. Illegals drive. Being unlicensed illegal immigrants they are uninsured. An uninsured driver passes costs incurred onto those insured. That'd be us.

Solution? Let them get a plastic thing that allows them to get insurance. How this magically translates into hand-outs to illegals is beyond me... I am not discussing immigration laws. The OP isn't discussing immigration laws. I'm discussing how this law effects me as an Illinois citizen.

Am I an illegal immigrant? Nope! Does this law do anything for me? Yep! Is it a positive for me? Potentially, yes. Assuming I ever get hit by an illegal again. I suppose if I use your logic then the next time I can just say "hey, you're not supposed to be here. You broke the law". Then, poof, my car and the street sign are magically repaired and it never happened. Right?

But nah, I should bear the burden there too. They should be allowed to just drive anywhere and everywhere willy-nilly and I'll just pick up the tab when they get in a wreck.

Well I don't see them as criminals, the state does, and I don't agree.

I am not missing any point. The reality is you have "illegal" immigrants in America, and they drive. Now either you find a way of sending them all home, not going to happen, you let them continue driving illegally with the problems that can cause, or you do the sensible thing.

This is not only for the benefit of the "illegals". If it's only the law you're concerned with then make them legal, problem solved no?

So this is ICE's mission statement

ICE's primary mission is to promote homeland security and public safety through the criminal and civil enforcement of federal laws governing border control, customs, trade, and immigration. The agency has an annual budget of more than $5.7 billion dollars, primarily devoted to its two principal operating components - Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

So if this is the case, I give them a BIG F for border control and immigration especially if they don't do anything about this... If I'm ICE, I would use this to my benefit and I would arrest each one of them who try to get a license...

How do you not agree with them being criminals? So illegals should just be allowed to come into the country without permission? They should be allowed to use up resources that taxpayers pay for?

If there were no illegals in this country this law WOULDN'T BE NEEDED... How do you not see that?

You're just as bad as the Govt. for just caving to them... It's pathetic...

I absolutely agree they get a big, giant F.

But if they were to just use this as a means to find illegals, that would last a month and we'd be right back where we started.

So lets see how this plan translates into something else

You own a hotel.....I come and break into your hotel, and stay in a room.....now because I am already in your room....lets give me a plastic card that lets me get room service

Yeah makes perfect sense...

They are tresspassing...they are breaking the law by being here...why give them anything?

If a crook busts down your door and steals your stuff...do you give them a key to your door because it costs you money to replace the door?

You don't see the irony in a CRIMINAL alien coming to a State Government office and being issued a legal state drivers license? Having that Drivers License issued to them as it's issued to any LEGAL resident or American citizen is NOT a handout?

So after they have their Federal Tax ID number, their Drivers license and their In-State Tuition to whatever school their little heart desires...what exactly *IS* left as a downside to being here as a federal fugitive?

Now the title includes illegal right in it...I beg to differ about EVER being able to discuss this without including the fact these are criminals. Outright. Making them legal doesn't change the laws that have broken any more than I could break laws and somehow get a 'do over' to make it all magically go away with the wave of a magic government wand. Only...that IS what they're getting ...and a license to drive away when it's done.

We're the ONLY nation I know of in the world that actually gives benefits and government support to illegal aliens violating every law by simply standing here....and you're still worried about your finances.

Tell me how your finances for an uninsured driver matter when you're out of work but the illegals have jobs just fine. EACH of them ..Each job...ones that could be employing an immigrant who spent their years getting here properly and working their butt off to do it. No.. this is wrong on every level and I can't believe anyone defends giving anything more to outright criminals.

(Next someone will be saying they should be able to run for office, vote and buy a gun :shk: )

Apples and oranges, friend. I see what you're getting at but it's not the same deal.

More like: I own a hotel, someone breaks in and stays in a room... but, I don't know which room and they keep charging room service to other paying customers. Meanwhile, the people responsible for removing the trespassers don't do their job, so now you give out a plastic card that keeps other customers from being unfairly charged. Have the trespassers benefited from this change? No. They're still trespassing and doing trespasser stuff just as they did before.

And no, I don't give them a key to my door since they already busted it in. But now since they didn't have bust-down-the-door insurance, mine makes me pay for it all. Possibly even doctor bills for the guy because he busted up his foot kicking in my door.

Sometimes you read something and wonder if the same language is being used as that which you think you know.

I mean, illegal immigrants. If they can apply for a licence, why is that not where the paddy wagon drives up to escort them to the immigration department for deportation?

Hey, they won't be driving into your passenger side door and causing your insurance to go up, if they're being processed on the way out... That's a better solution than issuing a license to drive, eh?

I am at a loss.

"Oh you're illegal, if we find you we'll deport you. But while we're looking for you, here, have a license to drive legally, just sign here, here and here. Done."

I AM AT A LOSS.

The number 10 is in the title of the OP. Shall we go off on a tangent discussing the pros and cons of the number 10?

For one, I never really liked BJ Armstrong during the Bulls first "three-peat". Had he worn, say, number 9, then I might have liked him.

Second, I really think the US should convert to the metric system.

10 is used a lot in the Bible...

While this is a great idea, lets expand it.

Lets give wanted murderers a nice hotel room to stay in, maybe a chauffeur to drive them to the theatre.

It will make them more productive illegal persons on the run. It might stop them stealing your car and telly too, because you know how those criminals are.

And as we're giving crims the benefits of legal citizens, lets build a nice big safe concrete citadel for everyone else to live in. Bars on windows to keep these crims out and guard dogs to ensure our safety.

I'll be first in line..

It's been good...err.. Well.. It's been a debate anyway.

I think I'll take that advice about saying nothing when there is nothing decent left to say.

You're doing mental gymnastics and flying off on tangents now to come around to avoid calling them illegal when the whole reason this is even a story to talk about is the fact legal drivers licenses are being issued to them AS illegals.

I just don't know where to go when the whole core purpose the story matters is one you figure is off limits.

who gets to decide whats a moral law? plants are illegal and cant even be talked about on this site id think of that as an immoral law but yet we do not get to ignore federal law with out consequences so why do illegal immigrants get to pick and choose? why do they have more rights and privileges then those who go through legal channels.

does the pedophile get to screw little children and not face consequences because he thinks its immoral to lock him up for it?(nambla tried just this citing being a protected class once)

does the religious fundamentalist that wants to beat the ever loving crap out of their kids get exempted for child abuse laws because they think its immoral to "spare the rod spoil the child"?

does the off the grid hippy get to pay no taxes because he or she considers taxes immoral?
how about abortion some people think abortion is immoral and should be punished for being wrong does that mean we toss out roe v wade just because some one seems to think its immoral?

does every one just get a pass because of perceived morality? do we get to pick and choose the laws we follow with out consequence? who gets to decide if a law is moral or not and if some person is magicly chosen what makes their point of view the "right" one?

But see it is the same thing and thats the point...it is a crime, and you are but one of the victims of the crime...
yes it hurts your pocket book...but it hurts everyones as well...

Do you think the only thing it costs you is the auto repair/insurance thing? Even if they all had auto insurance..it still costs you every day they are here! Your tax dollars and mine pay for them....
you are only seeing the money they take out of your front pocket....and not seeing it being taken from your back pocket as well..

jhn7537, you speak very wise words. Allowing an illegal immigrant to get a drivers license is a huge mistake in my opinion. If they are competent enough to take and pass the requirements to get a drivers license, then they should be competent and Willing enough to become a U S citizen.

I can understand if someone wants to leave their s**t hole of a country for a better life in the U S. I don't blame them a bit. But, being that the U S is a nation of laws, they must be in compliance with the laws. Whether the laws seem moral or not is a moot point. The majority of American Citizens are law abiding folks.

Illinois is simply encouraging people to break the law and come to our state and be rewarded. It wouldn't surprise me if we have to start shelling out more tax dollars to pay for their insurance as well,,,,,,Illinois politics...Grrrr

Hey, don't get me wrong, I respect you but we're not seeing eye to eye here, so...

I've clearly mentioned them being here illegally numerous times, it's not off-limits. But the focus of the law (which is the reason this thread exists) is licensing illegal immigrant drivers. Can we debate policy, or the lack thereof? Or are we just wanting an opportunity for an internet rant against illegal immigrants and the ineptitude of our government agencies to do something about it?
