Teen Who Killed Family and Planed Shooting Spree, WAS NOT ALLOWED ACCESS TO VIOLENT MEDIA OR GAMES

There is so much B.S. on these forums and in the MSM about violent games and shows causing violence. BUT THE EVIDENCE OF THE STUDIES ACTUALLY SEEMS TO INDICATE THE OPPOSITE. For example I have heard that domestic violence goes down significantly where violent gaming is allowed, but is much higher where violent gaming and media outlets are not present. This new article is a real world example. The basic idea is that the violent games and media allow people to "let off steam", to fantasize and investigate those fantasies with out having to actually harm anyone. The killer in this article had homicidal and suicidal fantasies even though he had no access to the violent videos and games. By not having an outlet to safely explore harming others, they tend instead to satisfy their curiosity with real world experimentation or they end up singularly embracing violence in their mind and acting it all out in one big event.

Discuss.

Everyone is different.

One kid that plays the violent games will want to copy it and carry out those acts.

Another kid wont play them and will never even have the slightest bit of harmful thoughts.

Its all parenting and upbringing in my opinion.

I completely agree with what you are saying, but Obama and his BAN hammer will come crashing down soon enough on video games and violent movies.......He is trying to make a point and I am afraid he is just beginning the crackdown with his giant hammer!!

This clearly states the obvious, like we all talk about on here all the time!! It is better to have violence to express yourself into games or movies so you don't have to actually see what it would be like in real life!!

Take Obama's hammer away and work on productive things like unemployment, national debt, economic downfall, price of oil, etc etc......Would be nice to see him do something productive for once!!

Only thing of value I can really offer to this thread other than my opinion on the matter are these two videos, both from my favorite intelligent video game reviewers on the web. The first video outlines pretty much what is wrong with this fallacy: It's just another decoy from the actual problem (mental illness).

Video courtesy of TotalHalibut

The second video is more aggressive but outlines another fine catalyst of this problem: the parents themselves.

If you have the time to, do take a look at these.

“Games, violent games…it's kind of what he was into," Sheriff Dan Houston said. That news came from a Bernalillo County press conference where investigators specified two video games Griego talked about a lot.

The game Call of Duty: Modern warfare was among his favorites and is a modern-day military game where players take on the role of a soldier carrying out violent missions. Another favorite was Grand Theft Auto that features thugs going on violent rampages in city streets and inside buildings.

The way sheriff's officials describe it, the 15-year-old seemed to light up while talking about the video games. "[He] was quite excited as he got the opportunity to discuss that with our investigators," Houston said.

I am not saying video games are the cause, but the premise of the OP is wrong, the shooter had access to and played the games.

I wonder if he was allowed access to prescription medication prescribed to him by a psychiatrist.
Now that's something to look into.

how come we had so many violent murderers and killers even before we ever had video games?

Oh the irony of it all... before that it was probably lack of violent games that was the problem...

I'm sorry to disagree here but I have to...not only by the post above mine showing he did apparently have access to the games but with the whole concept here.

Do video games or movies CAUSE the violence? Of course not. Only someone on a crusade with an agenda a mile wide would suggest a direct cause and effect.

Do 10's of thousands of simulated murders with graphic detail CONTRIBUTE to a lesser sense of meaning and importance to violence and death? How couldn't it?

It's elementary, as one literary character opined.

I would hope that some scientist would figure out that murder sprees actually predate movies, television and video games. I bet murder even happened before writing was invented.

I enjoy repeatedly running over pedestrians in Grand Theft Auto, until my car blows up, jumping out and spraying everybody with my AK-47 whilst my car dramatically blows up the people it so gracefully crushed.

But it doesn't make me want to do this in real life.

The relation with bad behavior, video games & movies is in my eyes just a scapegoat. Same applies with the subject of guns & mass killings.

All a big cover up for their own grand agenda.

Better the PR corporations that control the media outlets use Video Games as a scapegoat to blame for excessive violence in society rather than point the finger at themselves for the serious psychological damage they inflict on the populace that stems from there 24 hour brainwashing by commercial interests.

It all goes to society not taking responsibilty for their own actions, and the fact that no one really cares about anyone other law abiding citizens rights being taken away from them when that particular freedom is of no concern to them....

Look at what happened with the smokers! Those who didn't smoke, didn't care!

When are parents and adults going to start acting like adults and assume their rightful responsibilties??? When are adults going to quit depending on the government to raise their children?? When are adults going to protect each other rather than relying on the government, whom we all know do not represent us OR our freedoms and interest?

Being complacent as a society and allowing our government officials to step in and pretty much rule over every aspect of our lives and ALLOW it, is all the fault of those whom are incapable of assuming responsibilties and always look to put the blame on others for their misfortunes and dislikes....

Enjoy what freedoms you have left folks!

You gave examples that were biased. Kid plays them = violent. Kid that doesn't play them = not violent.

That's just not the case. Especially when you consider how many MILLIONS of kids are all playing the same games. I think they can have an effect in rare cases where kids are to fully immersed and are medicated or have mental illness.

NOPE.

Show me the peer reviewed research and research design.

Show me the stats.

My last review of the literature a few years ago documented that

Violent video games, TV, movies etc.

WOUND VIOLENCE UP; REHEARSED IT . . .

as does hitting with pillows and foam bats--contrary to what was assumed 30 years ago.

Now we have solid research and even brain scans showing otherwise.

Actually, it's pretty simple . . .

planting cacti does not result in harvesting mangoes.

[color=6699FF]
The universal law is STILL . . . reaping what's sown.

Essentially, the key aspects, parts of the brain

do NOT distinguish between fantasy violence and real violence.

1. The emotions are essentially the same
2. The strengthening of neural pathways contributing to violence are essentially the same.
3. Desensitization about violence is essentially the same.
4. Glorification of violence is essentially the same.
5. The adrenaline high from the violence is essentially the same.
6. The dopamine high from the violence is essentially the same.
7. The sense of power vs powerlessness is essentially the same.
8. The sense of accomplishment is essentially the same.
9. The involvement of various ATTACHMENT DISORDER components and dynamics in the personality are essentially the same.
10. The brain damage from ATTACHMENT DISORDER relates to real and fantasy violent dynamics and factors essentially the same . . . particularly the brain centers handling emotions and relationships.

Repeated perceptions, choices and actions at the brain level STILL STRENGTHEN THOSE REPEATEDLY USED NEURAL PATHWAYS--REGARDLESS of whether the violence is fantasy or real.

Actually, in some contexts and under some types of confusion and/or stresses, the DIFFERENCES

BETWEEN

FANTASY VS REAL

becomes quite BLURRED, fuzzy, far from clear.

CHOICES HAVE CONSEQUENCES.
BEHAVIOR HAS CONSEQUENCES.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HUMAN BEHAVIOR WITHOUT A REASON
.

I realize, of course, that many will continue to believe whatever they wish about violence . . . because . . .

[color=6699FF]
VIOLENCE IS ADDICTIVE. And our era is quite clear that ADDICTIONS ARE FIERCELY DEFENDED as wonderful, a "right," neat, cool, wonderful, exciting, . . . while spouses and children are strewn in the wake like so much used toilet paper
.

So I don't have a lot of hope that the above facts will greatly influence anyone. But on the slight chance that someone on the fence may learn . . . and be more likely to leave violence behind--there it is.

.

The THRESHOLD for each individual is different

AND

the context is different.

Folks who think that such massive use of violent games and movies will NOT result in increased desensitization and greater ease of killing one's family members, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, fellow-citizens . . . are just not aware of the true facts of the human organism, not to mention sociological conditioning that's quite intense in our era.

The oligarchy WANT folks blood thirsty over the slightest stimulus. It aids their UN Agenda 21 value and goal.

Sooooooooooooooo

please . . . such well informed wisdom and erudition must be able to tell us . . .

how many mass killings of faculty and classmates by students were there in say . . . 1952?

1955?

1940?

1850?

1960?

I think Obama has a point.

Perhaps in his formative years he played games like Tropico and Roman total war and this explains his desire to now screw and control his minions, produce weapons and wage expansionist wars

Perhaps the bankers played too many games of monopoly and found the only way to be assured of winning was to cheat

Let’s ban boxing and other violent contact sports that actually train our young to perform violent acts in the real world.

Its all noise. He is distracting everyone from the real problems he faces. Youth condemned to no future. A population enslaved in debt and the pursuit of the meaningless.

An ever growing gap between those that have everything and those that have nothing and more joining the nothing group every day.

He makes noises about violent games being a problem but says very little about our kids being killed maimed and turned into monsters in Afghanistan.

And just incase we begin to wake up all the governments of the world are removing the right to free speech and are desperately trying to control information available on the net

I would say, at most, people are much more desensitized from violence than ever before, but that's where I think it ends. A child (or adult) that is capable of mass murder, is capable regardless of movies, music, or video games. Some people are just predisposed to violent desires. Sometimes, good parenting is enough to squash those tendencies. Sometimes, nothing is.

What doesn't help matters is the apparently large portion of the gun owning public not having the sense of responsibility to keep their weapons locked in a gun safe, where the kid can't gain access. I'm not saying that would stop anyone from committing a violent act if they so chose to do so, but it does appear that the guns of the parents are readily available to these kids when they should not be.

I find it ironic as hell that they are targeting the gaming industry, although it makes sense for a variety of reasons.

Actually, I'm going to make a thread on this a bit later tonight.

Regarding this, well it's clear that there is no real correlation between violent video games and violent behavior. No more than any other violent media that you are exposed to. Television, movie, literature or otherwise.

It's a matter of environment, opportunity and intelligence. As well as the narcissistic idea that you have the power over life and death.

Common themes, found in all violent media. If you target one, you must target the other and that includes your little fan fiction version of the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Then again, I guess violence and gore porn are only acceptable in the name of nationalism.
