I teach my children to question everything and If anybody asks anything about our family to tell them it is none of their business and if they want answers then please contact my Mom or Dad.

This is what my parents taught me way back in the 60's and 70's. And this is what we should be teaching our kids today. They don't have to answer personal questions that are outside of the reason they are at the doctors office to begin with.

The doctors job is to treat and heal. Questions should be limited to the circumstances at hand. If we keep allowing these little encroachments, they turn into big brother "all up in your business" down the road.

Time to stand our ground!

Don't panic! Doctors have been asking this for years - especially pediatricians. About a year ago I took my daughter in for an ear infection - her regular MD was on vacation so we were assigned to one of her "associates". The Dr. comes in and states that he is going to start with a few questions. First, is my daughter on any medication? Next, are my wife or I on any medication (WTF???)? I asked why he needed to know and he stated he was concerned about my daughter's access to said medication. Then, do we wear seatbelts? Then the bomb, Do we have guns in the house? I told him, and I'll quote it, "None of your Goddamned business." With that, I took my daughters hand and walked her right out of the place and drove to a minute clinic to get some antibiotic for the ear infection.

I got a call about a week later from her regular pediatrician who apologized and explained that many doctors are participating in a Census study. She didn't elaborate beyond that and assured me that it would never happen again.

I think the bigger mystery is: What is this census study? How long has it been going on? And what information is being shared?

So in other words nobody can read the story? And yet we have lots of people ranting once again when they have no idea what the story is. And people wonder everyone thinks this place is a collection of loons.

I respectfully stand for what I say and no, I am not trying to create a debate here, but been a parent and had one of my child with behavior problems during his school years I have plenty of experience of how the system work.

From doctors diagnostic to specialist yes I can talk and I am very familiar what a doctor job is and what he can do, and don't.

But "interrogating is not the job description of a doctor" that is for child and human services to do, probe and do house visits when a child is obviously in trouble.

Doctor business is to practice medicine.

BTW my son now at 26 is a hard working tax payer and a model citizen, medicines, specialist, special schools, didn't do the job, love, patience and understanding work better.

No. You're just the only one who can read it properly. Thank god we have you keeping us loons in line.

Calling or referring to it as an Interrogation is just an exaggeration of what's going on here. It was no such thing, nor was it close to any such thing and to claim it as such is wildly incorrect and as far as I can see, a clear attempt to sway opinion. It's not something that's going to work either. It was, as described to us anyway, mere questioning in regards to the safety of the child in all aspects. And, given recent events, a pretty reasonable question to ask as well in my opinion. Again I should point out it was not the only question asked.

Did he have to answer this, as well as the questions about bullying and whatever else? No, of course he wouldn't be forced to do that. Again, it's not an interrogation and to claim it as such is incorrect to say the least. Let's at least describe this as what it is here.

It's the job of the pediatrician to look out for the overall well being and safety of the child. I see him clearly doing his job here. Nothing malicious about his questioning, nothing sneaky and nothing else like this either. Just someone doing what's right.

Its not the DRS job nor the states to raise other peoples children. Raise your own kids.

This is what I also respectfully disagree with. The pediatricians job is to treat the immediate problem, and heal it. He/she is a doctor, not a social worker. Questions should be limited to the immediate problem. Nothing else. IMHO.

Do you live here? Are you planning to live here? If no to both, it's really none of your business is it?

This was not addressed to me, and yes, I do live "here", but I need to say: what a brilliant openness to opinions! What freedom of discussion! What warmth of the american character!

People who do not live here (and yet seem to be aggressively encouraging oppression of all kinds in other countries) are doing a little more than just expressing a harmless opinion. They will not face any negative consequences to their own rights if it actually happens. There is no law that says they can't do this but if they have any sense of decency at all they should not be trying to encourage oppression in another country.

And regardless of the scale and scope of the issue currently being discussed, I have seen many Europeans who have said things like "guns should be banned in America" and "The First Amendment to the US Constitution should not exist".

Again, I do not suggest you don't have a right to your opinion but if your opinion is that freedom is bad (and particularly if you're saying people in other countries have too much of it) you are most certainly a deplorable human being.

I agree, one of the biggest problems is that many people do not understand what our constitution means to us and they do not understand how we are so faithful to a document that is soo old.

Is call patriotism, in a way, we may complain about our system of government but what keeps that system of government from becoming completely corrupted is actually that old document.

Without it Tyranny would had taken hold in America a long time ago.

If my kids have a bullying problem, it's between me, them and the principle or teacher. My children know who's important in their life. And who's not. Drive your car fast as you like, it's your country. I don't pretend to know what's best for someone else living thousands of miles away, in a place I've never been and really know nothing about, other than what I see on the news.
If you drive beyond your capabilities, well....

No problem for me - I chose not to have kids when I was 12 and stuck with it over 40 years & 3 wives.
I've been asked by new docs and in ERs if I've been the victim of any abuse, especially since I have significant bruising from blood thinners and daily injections. I usually say "Not besides what you're doing to me now".

The ONE question I ask the doctor that ALWAYS shuts them up is "Who is your medical malpractice insurance carrier?". Works every time.

ganjoa

P.S. I never get asked about guns since I use my CHL for an ID instead of my drivers license everywhere.

Such a great reply and actually a very valid question considering all the deaths caused by doctor's mistakes.

Interesting that when my son had problems with the school, it was between the school principal, school counseling, superintendent office and us that the problem was dealt with, the doctor involvement was my personal choice as treatment and references to a specialist to rule out mental problems and learning disabilities, everything was a procedure and been questioned by a regular doctor was not part of the treatment, no even the child physiologist my son had ever brought the subject of guns, yes child abuse, sex and illegal drugs but that was something I expected.

My son was prescribed retalin by his pediatrician and he wanted to add another antidepressant, something that my son's specialist ruled out unnecessary and even dangerous for a developing teen at 14.

Now doctors prescribe this medications like it was candy.

This days things are difference and that is unacceptable.

You type 3 whole sentences and the first one is to point out Obama attacks, which has not been part of this thread, and then used funny faces. The second one states people are all crazy here, except you apparently. And the the third, another overkill on what is a typical discussion.

I think you know exactly what you are doing here, and it is not to debate the issue of doctors becoming interrogators for the state.
