It was something on the camera lens.
The image on Google Moon is from Apollo 15. You can see it in this image here:
Not only can you see it there, but you can find it in several images as they were orbiting the moon. Here is a list:

If you take a look at images 1661 thru 1664, you can see it move with the camera.
To get a REALLY good close up view of it, you can go to this link here and down load the resolution that you want. Biggest one is 1.6 GB, and you can
see it looks like crap on the lens:

You can zoom in and out with your browser. As you do, note the other crap on the film plate (IE dust, fibers, etc)
Here is an image of the area taken by the LROC:
it's not there.
