He was supposed to repeat " ...preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." What he said for the partial phrase (they break it up into small bites) was "(gulp) the Constitution of the United States." Hopefully he said it correctly for the legally mandated oath on Jan 20th (take privately yesterday) ....but today (21st) is the oath taken publicly before the citizens of the country. Did anyone else catch it? Has anyone heard the legal oath taken on the 20th? Leaving out "preserve, protect and defend (the Constitution)" when all he has to do is repeat after Justice Roberts and he has taken this oath before has me a little unsettled (afterall he is a Constitutional lawyer also).

He is still speaking....a lot of patriotic lip service ("unalienable rights", etc). Now some reference to MLK...."all declared equal" (I wonder if that means you can be president without having the correct credentials?).

We practice for weddings, small town speeches, job interviews... we even practice learning to drive. Why oh why couldn't this man practice for one of the most important oaths a country witnesses and participates in? This is his second time doing it, you'd think he'd be at least a little familiar with what he's supposed to say - lip service or not.

Just. I dunno. I guess I'm too old fashioned.

everyone forgets it was roberts who blew it last time

When U.S. President Barack Obama takes the oath of office, he will place his hand on two Bibles.

The first is the Bible used by former President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, when he took the oath of office for the first of his two terms in 1861. The second Bible is the so-called "traveling Bible" used by slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday is the official government holiday honoring Reverend King who was assassinated in 1968.

President Obama was officially sworn-in for a second term Sunday during a brief, private ceremony at the White House, making Monday's public event ceremonial. He used his wife Michelle's family Bible for the oath Sunday.

The presidential term ends on the Constitutionally-mandated date of January 20, which fell this year on a Sunday when courts and public offices are closed. Tradition holds that in such cases the president is sworn-in privately on the 20th with the public ceremony taking place on the following Monday.

Monday's swearing-in will be the fourth time Obama takes the oath of office.

Obama was also sworn-in twice for his first term in 2009. During the first ceremony, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John Roberts stumbled over one of the words while administering the oath, so the oath was given again one day later.

I just reviewd the tape from yesterday: Justice Roberts broke it into a smaller segment yesterday with just "protect, preserve and defend" as one phrase to repeat and President Obama got it correct when it counted.

Yes that is true...it was Roberts who messed it up 4 years ago.

I think this is precisely why they have a quiet and controlled ceremony for the formal change of power where the pomp and circumstance doesn't have people making stupid mistakes of speech or repeating the words back. Obama is not a strong public speaker when not going from prepared text and it's not a dig, it's a simple stated fact by observation.

Does anyone think Obama or anyone else would deliberately ad-lib and butcher the Oath? Especially THIS President? If there is one American leader who will never forget the meaning of the technicality, it's this one. Birth Cert anyone?

I'm sure he got the quiet one precise and perfect just as it needs to be....lest someone use one misplaced word as a legal basis to challenge his right to rule as President because of it. C'mon, we all know SOMEONE would, too.

"(gulp) the Constitution of the United States."

so he is indicating he is not going to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the CORPORATE United States.

i don't see a problem with that.
good for him.

i haven't seen the clip.
what do you mean he says ''gulp' the constitution...
did he gulp or say gulp? when he was suposed to say preserve and protect, or what?

because something like this was predicted here in the comments.
removing the shackles blog

i am taking a wait and see approach regarding the central message of the blog (been
down that road before), but some said that he would fluff his lines purposely because
he wasn't really the president under the new system that is now in operation (behind the
scenes as of yet, but not for long).

interesting.

"(Gulp)" as in swallow sound in the throat versus "Gulp" which would be saying the word "gulp" itself. I think he was expecting it as it was yesterday where it was broken into smaller segments and when Roberts stated the longer segment with "preserve, protect and defend" he simply skipped it and just repeated the shorter segment from yesterday which was "the Constitution of the United States."

It is a moot point as a) the real oath was yesterday (more ceremonial today) and b) anyone who would conspire to violate the Constitution would certainly lie under oath anyway. It isnt like you cant convict someone for treason or even impeach them from office on a technicality of the wording of the oath that they repeated. The office itself is held to a certain high standard as well as the law of the land.

Relax people, this is the one day in a presidency when the president is so busy getting his ego stroked that he has no time to do any harm.

There will be time for drama, the realization of fears and everything else, in the days ahead.

Today, this day is a good day for America!

Tomorrow?

We'll see...

The man disgusts me but I think his reaction to having to say those words was genuine.
