This is Beijing smog.

Sometimes truth is dirtier than science fiction?

For reference, actual Blade Runner:

Wow! Great comparison. Love the avatar too. Had to magnify it then thought, "man, I would like to know what he was thinking at that moment! "

What I guess I'm getting at is Blade Runner takes place in Los Angeles 2019. This is Beijing 2013.

Looks like the future is here guys.

Personally I was hoping for the Back to the Future II flying Deloreans and hoverboards kind, but looks like we got the hyper-polluted, corporate-globalization dreary post-apocalypse kind.

Anyone surprised, really?

Although it's not a movie scene, it's still hard to believe.
But with almost no regulations, apparently this is normal to them.

Who would want to live like that?
I know I sure wouldn't. And I'm NO "greenie".

That smog is horrendous, to say the least.

My own opinion, who do we blame?
Their gov't for allowing this to take place?
The companies for knowingly producing so much smog?
The people who actually run the processes to manufacture things?
Or the people who buy the cheap goods and allow that market to flourish?

I point the finger at greed.
The greed of a revenue streamlined gov't.
The greed of a profiteering company with no morals.
The greed of a worker ant just trying to make more money to survive.
Or the greed of an over-indulgent consumer constantly buying the newest chinese gizmo.
Greed.
Because it is the root of it all...

Yes, that is an amazing comparison. The movie was almost "prophetic" in that sense.

He was thinking, "Seig Heil my a**"

Join the Outer Colonies today!

Interesting pic.

It seems from time to time, science fiction writers may actually see a little of the future.

Jules Verne, Robert Heinlein, and even George Orwell got some parts of their futures right.

I am hoping that Ayn Rand was 100% wrong, but I see a lot of her ideas coming into fruition as well.

We have interesting days ahead it seems.

Aldous Huxley!!

Absolutely. Dead On.

Possible greatest ATS thread ever:
Aldous Huxley was correct not George Orwell

Bladerunner is an iconic cautionary tale. A future that I feel is unavoidable. Corporate "person-hood", organ transplants, clones, omnipresent government, rampant pollution, poor living conditions for all but the ultra wealthy.

Orwell's 1984 came a bit late. The rest is happening right on time.

Sorry, but most folks can't drive a car safely. Flying cars for the masses will not happen until someone develops anti-gravity that does not require a power source. Can you imagine falling cars?

judging for those pictures, china is years ahead of n.america.

apart from the smog, it looks like those buildings are 50 years in the future.

detroit looks like a war zone.

As I've stressed before, we need to abandon fossil fuels & really begin to embrace clean, renewable, & cheap/free energy. There are many existing technologies & ones in development that would shift the paradigm entirely --- problem is these fossil fuel barons that are greed-singularities, & power-hungry narcissist with an insatiable appetite for controlling people.

Say goodbye to the grid.

The greed of a worker ant just trying to make more money to survive.

So, its not moral to try to make money to go on trips, engage in hobbies, etc?
