You don't need a TOR browser/bundle to go onto the dark web. Just add "(dot)to" to the end of the .onion url you are going to. Yes, a warning pops up telling you that you aren't secure, but it shows that the boy may not even had to use the TOR bundle.

Exactly!

This is nothing more but an advertisement for 'the dark web', ever heard of the Streisand effect? en.wikipedia.org...

Yep, same here.. Even if it were true, the kid would have to have known about the .onion url and a specific .onion address to add the .com too.

Maybe.

The article is from a Grimsby news website which probably has fewer visits than your local alley at bar-closing time.

It's probably had more hits from this thread than in the previous 6 months.

first off you cant just stumble onto TOR aka the dark web.. You have to install software specifically to use it.. If you are on there looking for games/ect then you are looking for illegal games and illegal things already because most things on there are illegal in some way...

It sounds like he went to silk road or one of the many online shopping stores where you can buy anything illegal from drugs to software to guns which is also not easy to get to first you need to know the onion address and they don't have a google search that is just going to give you links to tor sites. On top of that You cant even see silk road until you sign up and get a user/pass and you would already know what you are sighing up for if you did it..

So yah you dn't just stumble upon these things he wanted to be there and most likely his dad caught him watching child porn or something.. Also most sites don't have guns on them for sale there are some sites that sell only guns but I would never buy one from the internet because its to risky you have to get it shipped to you somehow so when you pick it up from somewhere even if its a drop point you still run the risk.

the most important part about TOR is you can't track who uses it atleast not without really trying hard. you cannot shut the sites down and you cannot see where they are hosted so you can host information like wikileaks without getting shut down no matter what you put on there.

They do have the dark side to it like hacker forums I go to one hacker forum often. They also have any porn you can think of on there but you have to take the good with the bad.

For the life of me I do not understand why people put how to access it in comments when the news title keywords has access video games in it.

Do people not have any sense?

Some things are good and bad. Some really good, necessary things exist but can be used by bad people.
People need to chill and keep the dark web dark.

Thinking authorities don't already know about it because you don't is just stupid.

Do people not think anymore? Or is everyone just so caught up in what they know and what they can do and think that's it for everyone, that they lose all sense?

I feel the same...Im a cop and honestly have never heard of this...and im even into tech...Big fail for me...i thought you could find anything you wanted on the regular internet without there being a "dark" one...

To access the darknet by using (dot)to doesn't work for me either... and to be honest whats the point in using it that way? Its all about anonymity and any browsing on the clearweb will leave a trail.

My opinion is that there is some heavy s**t in the darknet because its hands down the most anonymous way to surf the web.

Whether good or bad - One day we will all be thankful for it.

ETA: I've often noticed how painfully slow it is but I think I'm right in saying that the more people who use it the faster it gets. I'd appreciate a clarification on this

You can replace .onion with .tor2web.org and it'll work for many hidden services.

Its not dark and its not hidden. Try and compare it to being on a different network maybe.
Anyway, in case people are wondering.. When you start up the TOR browser, it connects you to a circuit, which connects you to other peoples ip addresses that are using TOR.

Nvm, they can explain it better here..

TOR Project

Tor helps to reduce the risks of both simple and sophisticated traffic analysis by distributing your transactions over several places on the Internet, so no single point can link you to your destination. The idea is similar to using a twisty, hard-to-follow route in order to throw off somebody who is tailing you — and then periodically erasing your footprints. Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data packets on the Tor network take a random pathway through several relays that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can tell where the data came from or where it's going. To create a private network pathway with Tor, the user's software or client incrementally builds a circuit of encrypted connections through relays on the network. The circuit is extended one hop at a time, and each relay along the way knows only which relay gave it data and which relay it is giving data to. No individual relay ever knows the complete path that a data packet has taken. The client negotiates a separate set of encryption keys for each hop along the circuit to ensure that each hop can't trace these connections as they pass through.

The more people with high speed internet that become nodes, the faster it can be potentially. Just running TOR, you are not running a node by default, you have to enable it specifically.

Others like I2P and freenet are different though. I know one of them, you have to stay connected 24/7 and are used as a "node" by default. The longer you are connected, the faster speeds you can potentially get. Being as canada is a craphole when it comes to internet, especially in rural areas, I stick to TOR. We get stupid data usage fees up here *grumble*, and I am now paying 4 times what I did in NY for internet, for worse speeds, and limited usage.

A couple years ago I stumbled on some pretty shady things online also. Porn websites with underaged girls (and some girls were very young) and selling underaged girls for sex, etc.

I found them by clicking through those "russian bride" adds, and random porn videos. I was uderaged myself at the time and was just curious about these things, though when I found that stuff I didn't tell anyone since I was embarrassed.

The boy could possibly have done the same and since his young age feels awkward to tell someone the truth about how he found it, 12 years olds these day aren't "innocent" to all the stuff on the internet.

Ah, thanks for that

Do I2P and Freenet provide absolute anonymity though? I heard about another system called Whonix the other day, but haven't had time to check it out yet.

Well....in a way it IS dark and it is HIDDEN....

from the hand wringing mommies that would demand a stop to it.

That will only think that little johnny might see porn on it....

That will not think about the fact that it is vital to us to get communications in and out from inside very tight/filtered countries.....

That is in fact, VITAL in a lot of ways, that mommy worrying about Johnny will never even think of.

I don't like people putting instructions in comments where story titles could easily be found by kids.

Have some common sense. JMO

Agreed.
But its not only porn and guns. I found a pretty good conspiracy site on it... Not anything like ATS
and the information therein was not anything you couldn't find on the clearweb. Also a facebook style thing and some excellent libraries with very good stuff in.

I never looked into I2P and Freenet too much personally, if I recall correctly, freenet is more useful for sharing files anon. You dedicate HD space to store encrypted chunks of files to share with everyone. You can't pick and choose what is stored, everything is stored all over, so in theory, once something is shared there, it can never be erased.

I don't believe this at all. Kid just randomly stumbles into a super covert online network.

Sound like too good to be true "hollywood" scripted horses***.

Someone wants to link video games/free internet use to child trafficking and illegal arms industry.

Right, and you could - if you shut it down - just drive them further underground on PRIVATE networks using private protocols.

Don't dare throw out the baby for the bathwater.

But it scares me, b/c I know how mommies can be. I am one, but I like to think I'm a tad bit more educated technically and geopolitically than most.
