Yes, actually, this thread was "inspired" by a conversation the OP and I were having in another thread, so I felt I would go ahead and lay out for him what I have gathered.

Yes, I have to agree, it does not sound like a very pleasurable existence...

Oh! I thought of another couple of things I gathered:

-- Girls and women are not to be educated (at least in some sects)

-- No images of Mohammed are allowed, nor are illustrations of the Quran....

thats the Kabbah, a room/building, constructed by Abraham pbuh and Ishmael pbuh. It was a place to worship and shelter for travellers, named house of God/Allah but not literally, the practice of circling it 7 times started by Abraham pbuh, testifying the fact of One God by action. As a Circle has one centre.
It serves as a direction to bow down. So called kiblah(direction)

After discussing here i realised that islam is really alien to most so got an idea to just find out what is the level of knowledge about islam among posters.

Let me start by stating an example i heard from a friend.

Do not know that much. I have tried reading and english translation off the Quran but I cannot stand the preaching of fear of god I have read in that book and it seems to be a bit duality driven in it's views of woman/man.

If I had read it in it's original form and stuck with it I would probably have found some of gods truths and some small minded understanding from my point of view but I find that in any man made religion.

I have a hard time figuring it out what it is but there is something a little of the mark in buddhistic philosophy also. Like a person getting lost in mindgames with itself that serves no real purpose.

From my point of view the mystics will always seek more truth and feeling of god than the people who just memorize what they are being told and do not break thru it's chains. So I guess I am more interested in Sufism than Islam. Organised unspiritual religion is for me more in the way than something that brings you to god.

Would not using Jesus as a symbol of god and an in between you and god also be an idol. .

PS. Jesus is a messenger from god as well as a message but is not the only ONE sent and god have made sure all those messages exists to be able to get the best connection it can with every soul.

oh yes! we muslims are all architects we worship a building!!
Ok now seriously,
Kabbah serves a purpose, direction, centre, a pilgrimage point but above all what matters is obeying a command from God.
If i dont know which direction is the Kabbah then i can bow and pray in any direction. That clears the blame that its an idol. It just unites all to face one direction and pray.

I have noticed that you are not of the "christian religious faith" but I have a feeling Jesus would call you one of his sheep. . I still wanted to make this comment even if you are not "christian" . And from my point of view you and I are not fighting/arguing or debating but playing with our human minds.

He was not a pillar of "good behavior".

He is called mercy for mankind in the Quran. Did you know, he kneeled to offer his thigh to his wives to help climb a camel, washed and mended his own clothes, helped the wife with cooking, always had a smile on his face when he met people, women argued with him, had a servant for decade and not even once rebuked or question him about any mistakes, married a 40 year old widow when he was 25 and remained monogamous till her death thats about 24 years...

Women are to be covered up completely or at least their heads covered, so that they are not "seductive" to men.

Actually, the head cover is their so that they are recognised as muslims and left alone. Its kind of a big sign "NOT AVAILABLE FOR YOUR FUN"

I can't tell you how many times I've chatted with people while standing in lines, or shopping, or waiting for my car to be serviced.....also in school, chatting with my neighbors, just conversations....interesting, harmless, and enables people to see who each other are. How do you know other people if you're not allowed to talk to them, neither to speak nor to listen? That seems excessively "sheltered" and would necessarily lead to ignorance of the world in general.

Only getting to speak to women? Oh boy.....no way. I'd be miserable. Men are much easier to get along with. Really.

he is the epoch of "nice guy"
he kissed his wife while leaving and after returning home.
That blame comes from a hadith that says he married Ayesha at 6 and consumated the marriage at 9. Although there are other references that contradict it.
A fact being that people measure their age by the time they were in islam.
Also the dad of Ayesha got all kids before islam and Prophet Muhammad pbuh married her a year after hijrah(leaving Makkah)and he preached in Makkah for about 10years. So that makes ayesha's age at least above 11years at marriage.
By the way Ayesha was the only virgin girl he married, his 2nd wife after Khadijah(1st) was an old widow whom he married to care for his kids. Other marriages were politically motivated to bring peace and unite the people together.
