Well, on Thursday nights I go to play bingo with my mother. Well, a few weeks ago we had a run-in with this same lady from tonight. She buys so many cards that she needs three seats to sit in and a few weeks ago, I didn't know that I was sitting in a seat she saved for herself. Instead of politely saying that I was sitting in her seat, she had to come up behind me and take a tone with me and get all huffy about it. I still took the high road and got up and politely moved as I apologized. My mother did not take the same route as I did. My mother glared at the woman for taking a tone with me for an honest mistake and she got up and kicked her chair in before she moved making a show of it.

Well, what mom and I usually do is she'll buy 25 dollars worth of cards and then cut them in half so that we both play half of the cards. She still pays for all of the cards and she gets all of the money anyway if I hit bingo on part of her set. I was really just there to get out of the house as I have been on break and have had nothing to do. I could've really cared less if I won or not. Well, tonight trouble started again with this same lady.

It was the black out round (the one where you have to fill in every space on a card) and I won it and the prize earnings were 250 dollars. Well, this lady and her sister went up to the front of the room and started screaming at the poor ladies at the desk demanding that my mother and I not get the prize money and that we were somehow cheating. She then proceeded to drag a poor woman outside from the desk and continue to banter her more with obscenities. A man that was helping out had to split up the fight and argue with her for a bit. The ladies were even getting violent. They were waiting up at the front for my mother and I to leave saying such things as "Well, they can't sit there all night!" and so forth. The ladies were eventually escorted away by people working there and mom and I still got our money. The man said that there would be no more card sharing from now on even though we didn't do anything wrong and he even admitted it.

I shook the man's hand and thanked him for letting us keep the money anyway even after the uproar and he said I was welcome and he thanked me for winning. A few people stayed after to comfort the ladies at the desk and assure my mother and I that we were not in the wrong and what we did was perfectly okay since mom paid for all of the cards anyway and she's the one that I gave the earnings to. One of the ladies from the front desk said she was quitting and wasn't coming back because she didn't have to take that kind of emotional abuse.

A few nice old ladies from town said that I could share cards with them any time, lol.

I just don't understand why people are getting so violent. I mean, it's just a game and really, we did nothing wrong. After we got home, mom gave me 50 dollars of it for my troubles though which I will be using this coming week to buy a computer program that I'm going to need for one of my classes.

Thank you for sharing your adventure. I am sorry about the experience. Souls are tired in this world right now I guess. Unfortunate the grumpiness. Midwinters short light contributes I'm sure.

Off the cuff guess? Some people have a very limited range of interests and one or two things can become the most important things in their lives, sometimes crowding out everything else. I think it falls under the category of obsession.

Bingo for some, politics for others, maybe gay rights, gun rights womens' rights, Islam, it could be nearly anything. It easily becomes the only thing in their lives and everything that happens to them gets related to their obsession. I'm sure you've seen these over-sensitive people who get terribly offended on a daily basis. That's my guess here.

Forget the bar fights, just go to bingo to watch the hockey game.

Those women can be brutal.

And then there is the possibility that she is just a mean old bitty that is unhappy all the time. There are people in this world that are impossible to please, and regardless of your kindness to them they just venomously spit it right back in your face.

Well, she doesn't have to worry about me for a while anyway. I have to go back to university this coming week so bingo nights with mom will have to end until my next break. Also, I think she may have a problem seeing as she spends probably around 50 bucks on cards every week just for herself, etc. and maybe I'm not one to judge upon that. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I have a two strike rule and she struck out. I honestly didn't care about the money, it's just the thrill you get from actually winning something and getting to shout "bingo!" . If I would've won in 54 moves or less, the lady would've been REALLY mad because the pay-out for that was $1500.

I guess I also can't blame the woman because afterward some people told me the town she was from and it kind of clicked. She's from a town that we all refer as a ghetto or a slum because of all of the developments, drug sales, etc. It's probably pretty rough living there and I can imagine that she might hate it.

Ahh this is why I never go outside unless I really have to.

People.

You just can't live with them, and you just can't seem to kill them legally.

It's a problem I've learnt only goes away when you do.

As for the old bat... I'd be less than gentlemanly in that situation. I help my old mum do the shopping occasionally, and there have been a few times when obnoxious cretins have tried to cut in front of, or knock out of the way, an elderly woman... thinking the big hairy bastard next to her must be getting dog food for his rottweiler.

No.. I'm just a disproportionate hippy. With anger issues.

They soon work out what is what and unless it's that big fat plonker that thinks he's still going to give us the finger and provoke us further, usually it ends with the look of realisation on their face.

People... annoying and obnoxious.

I wish there were more nice people in real life. Why are they all avatars on the internet. No one tries to stab you in the eyeball on the internet. Or steal your shoes.

I don't mind people really I guess.. but you get in my mums face, and you're asking a lot of anger to enter your world.

I have NO idea why some people are so hateful. You see it here and real life. Its kind of like they feel they are the center of the universe and are shocked and outraged that you dont think so too!

Sorry for your unfortunate travail.I echo several other members' sentiments regarding attitude,world-weariness,living in a stressful neighborhood,and especially obsession and addictive behavior.Some people are very touchy about such things,and Bingo has been known to be one of them.
I am a HUGE fan of Roseanne and your story reminded me of one of the funniest episodes where all the gals have a ladies night out and go to play bingo and Edie McClurgh (sp) plays a stereotypical Bingo addict and it's hilarious

I LOVE Roseanne! Lol, so I'll take that as a compliment. In any event, I plan to play bingo many more times whenever I'm back home on break from school and intend upon sitting beside my mother and making it appear like we're still card sharing just to shake up that woman's soda. Apparently she left bingo at her own hometown because they "don't know how to play right" ... Who didn't know how to play right? The people at bingo or her?

This isn't anything new. My wife used to go with my mom about 12-13 years ago all the time and this behavior was the norm then, according to my wife. There are some nasty, rude people who go to bingo. It's always been like that. I remember my mom talking about it 20 years ago or more. The first time my wife won a jackpot, she said that about half of the people there looked at her as if they could drag her into the street & kill her I told her she better not underestimate those blue-hairs!
