www.telegraph.co.uk...

A helicopter has crashed in central London this morning It hit a crane in Vauxhall, south London and a plume of smoke was seen billowing into the sky above the area.

It apparently hit a crane on top of a building, Scotland Yard said. It then hit two cars.

In very very small pieces. It was reportedly an Augusta 109. They generally don't withstand impact very well when they're cartwheeling into the ground from that height.

Could it Al-Qaeda ?

Could it be 16/1 ?

Isn't it near MI6 HQ ?

Btw , it is a really cost effective comparing with 9/11 ?

Dear bush , here is a lesson.

my two cents.

hope people are alright.

Witness reports on Sky just now saying that the helicopter was seen spiraling away from the crane after impact.

Sorry no pics

There was another, it seems you got done a few minutes before me though

Mine did not say anything about a UFO though.

I was asking some questions and woodwardjnr mentioned a low lying fog likely being the cause.

A copy of my questions from my post.

Do they require lights/flags to be visable on cranes and such to let air traffic see them easier?

Are helicopters allowed to fly that close to buildings (assuming this one did not have a landing pad on it)?

Did anyone in the area happen to see this or hear it as it took place? If so can you give some detail that we are not reading about?

Yes about 150 metres away from the MI6 building hmmmm but seriously foggy at the time of the crash.

This is the building in question - the cabling is damaged down the side but the crane itself seems intact.

Everyone is asking if warning lights were on the crane .....

Apparently the light on the crane was working fine, but apparently the top of the crane was obscured by fog.

Witness reports say the heli was seen banking very low over the Vauxhall Bridge which was very unusual.

Maybe the pilot was trying to avoid the fog and took a risk? Maybe he fell ill at the controls and lost it?

I've attended two heli crashes in the past, one was a lynx in a confined area and it's not a nice scene. Thumbs up again for the emergency services dealing with it, a good response from all involved by the sounds of it.

Could of been Johnny English flying back to the MI6 with Assad in handcuffs. Hey its better than the UFO thread.

Sky news are now confirming 2 dead - from eyewitness accounts this sounds plausible as one caller said a car was 'carbonized' when the chopper came down . Two cars are supposed to have been involved debris wise - one a land rover. To be honest if just the pilot and two car lots of occupants are the only fatalities it's a miracle. This was rush hour in a very busy part of South London.

For anyone interested this is allegedly the type of chopper involved - it looks to have a good safety record and is allowed to be flown by just one person - so Sky news are saying ....

An aviation safety expert just said that you are not allowed to fly withing 500m of buildings in London.

Not sure how that works considering there are buildings around there with helipads, i guess they are an exception.

Damn, its always sad to see fellow aviator go down, but i think he (or she) should of not flown so low on those vfr conditions.... unless ofcourse there was an emergency onboard ,mechanical failure etc... anyways R.I.P

Evacuating nearby now as the crane IS apparently precarious and a danger to the public. Part of the metallic arm is hanging loose .
