I think that most of the people considered hippies in the 60s were just wannabees that wanted to be one of the cool kids. I was born in the 60s to a couple of hippies. They dressed, acted and lived the parts. But being a hippie became unfashionable as real hippies evolved while wannabees were just in it for the easy sex and drugs of the culture- not the wanting to make the world a better place mentality. These late coming wannabees changed the perception of the hippie culture, and a lot of true hippies started to distance themselves from the label- thus beginning the disco culture.

At it's beginnings the disco culture was much like the hippie culture, only with flashier clothes and more socially acceptable music. But as the disco culture became more popular there was another influx of wannabees that once again were only in it for the sex and drugs and what they considered popularity. They didn't have the same mindset as the "originals" and an element of crime crept into the disco scene. So once again those who espoused the mindset of the original hippies sought to distance themselves from the lifestyle and faded into the background to begin- you guessed it- the urban cowboy crowd!

The original hippies/urban cowboy crowd tried to fit in with the pre-existing country and western crowd, but the mix didn't work out well for them. The original cowboys gave no respect whatsoever to the former hippie/urban cowboy crowd whom they considered fakers and ridiculed their train of thought. The feeling between the groups was mutual. Some of the hippies gave up and assimilated while others moved on to- the yuppie movement.

Many from the original hippie movement decided that they could affect more change from within the system and started conforming to the more capitalist mindset of the yuppies. The problem with this is that instead of changing the system from within most were swallowed up by it. There were some that didn't sell out, but most were sucked in- never to escape. The few remaining survivors went on to stimulate the beginnings of the new age movement, some of the rest ended up going the path that you describe- the evangelical movement, but most have just blended in with the rest of society.

I watched my own parents and all of their friends as they rode the waves of the various times. They still hold a lot of their original beliefs but age changes most if not all. Now the majority of them live just as we do: go to work, pay the bills, try your best to help your fellow man, live and let live. They just want to survive with as little interference as possible.

Yeah! You know what I'm talking about!

It's those wannabees that screwed everything up and now the wannabees are the ones out there pretending to be Christians and faking that too, messing it up for the real ones just like the messed things up for all the other groups of people

How can you say they aren't real Christians and they jumped on the bandwagon.
You are a Methodist and a Methodist isn't a real christian.
You say in your op for people to not attack you but you're attacking "born again Christians".
You're reflecting on your beliefs as a 100% Methodist.
Anti new testament. Anti scriptural. Anti Jesus.
Quit spreading hatred.

Seriously???? You don't even know what a Methodist is... I guess you're one of the "born again" crowd huh?

The "born again" crowd that wouldn't know Christ if he walked up to them on the street.

Many of the old hippies fell victim to capitalism and the interest in "things" and "let's not rock the boat". Others worked in the hemp and anti-prohibition movements, in anti-war movements, in anti-nuclear movements. Probably the people who called themselves hippies but who were just in it for the sex and drugs took their passion for self in monetary directions, and now watch reality shows and lol at fat people and others trying to rip each other new ones for the cash. Yet a certain percentage of the '60 and '70 hippies, as well as the beatniks of the '50s, have made and still make significant contributions to society.

I think you're right, the REAL ones are still around, it's those wannabees that continue to ruin it for everybody else

dear op,

based on your self-description, I can say that you and I are very different, idealogically speaking. however, your post is like a breath of fresh air on these boards which have stagnated with a certain stench for several weeks now. unlike (what appears to be) the majority here, you seem reasonable and level-headed.

thanks for offering us a fresh perspective.

actually...

That would be the "faux hippie" bunch that I'm raggin on at the moment myself, not the ACTUAL hippies that were seriously outnumbered and completely bastardized by the influx of said faux posers.

basically, I'm tired of hypocritical posers claiming to be something they aren't and ruining anything they decide they are part of with their greed, hatred and ignorance.

I didn't state things as well as I should have and did only slightly better while discussing it with a friend. This is what I said to the friend that made a little more sense (maybe)
"It was actually venting about this psycho person I know and I wanted to put it in words. She was one of the "fake hippies" and then a fake biker, then a fake this and a fake that. She did every drug known to man and slept with every man in the tri-state area and now she's "born again" and goes on and on and on about her church while she judges everybody around her and gossips behind their back.... and still does drugs, yet gossips about other people doing them. "

I've never done the drug thing, I like to be in control of my actions... well, as much control as I can be anyway, of course sometimes you just have those days where you can't form a complete sentence I guess. I do believe in God, but I keep that to myself and the words I read apply to me, not to other people, that's what being a Christian is about. It's about cleaning your own stoop instead of worrying about somebody else's. That's not what the evangelical fundamental non-denominational born-again whatever group does. They are out to get everybody who doesn't agree with them and to lash out and shout down anybody and everybody then shove their opinions down everybody else's throats.

It's that tea party bunch that are just like the people who crucified Christ but are now claiming they follow him and are actually far, far from it. They are anti-choice and pro-death penalty which totally contradicts each other. Either support both abortion and the death penalty or oppose both of them, you can have one and hate the other.
There's a lot more I could say, but I've rambled enough already and it'll just be more rambling so I'll just stop there.

Oh well, guess I gotta get rid of the van, firepit, and the good old stereo system. Can't sniff any more of that birch bark when firing up the woodstove either. No more going to concerts and to all those Indian programs around here and I guess I have to find a box to live in.

Ah crap, that doesn't even sound close to interesting. I'd have to give up all my friends and start eating all the poisonous foods that the government says is safe. I'd have to start taking the drugs the doctors are trying to push on everyone. I'll stick with my coffee.

What exactly is the point of your OP? What did the hippies ever do to you to make you this whiny?
After that - could you explain why you're so concerned (and a little bit gloat-y) about where they've gone? Then finally - I would like (in my wildest dreams of course) a short essay about what hippies actually were - and are
That's right - are. The system didn't beat nobody: We Don’t Need Martyrs … But Changes

Not attacking hippies at all, attacking the fake ones who jumped from bandwagon to bandwagon and are now the evangelical born again non denominational fundamentalist tongue speaking hypocrits that are so prolific these days.
A real Christian? Somebody that actually follows Christ instead of an uneducated "preacher" that just woke up one day and decided he was an evangelist and needed to "lead people". Real Christians keep their relationship with God between God and themselves, not shouting and screaming and cramming it down the throats of everyone they come into contact with. They help strangers as well as friends and give of what they have to those who need it when they see a need instead of looking down their noses and telling them to 'git rite with gawd hallelujah!" or "you is of da DEBIL, git behind me satan!! gawd have mercy" or babbling and claiming they are speaking in tongues because it's the "in thing" to do. A real Christian is somebody you wouldn't even know is a Christian unless you asked them directly because they don't go around harping on the rest of the world and telling them they're headed for hellfire and damnation. It's more spiritual than religous, as it should be.

You have your 60's Hippies.

You have your 70's to 90's Grateful Dead Hippies.

You have your Jesus Freek Hippies.

THEN...you have the worse Hippies of them all...your present day activist College Hippies!

The last group found a vinyl record and player in their parents basement along with a plastic bag with some twigs and seeds in it which they rolled and smoked while listening to Sugar Magnolia OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

Then about 4 years later these Hippies will borough their parents new $50,000 Volvo and drive up to Vancouver where they will participate in a Warped Tour Show that Bob Weir and Rat Dog are headlining and shortly after this show will put on a Skimask and smash a few store windows outside a G-12 Economic Summit.

After when they get home...their former 60's Hippie Parents who spent 3 days naked and tripping their brains out on Blotter Acid will admonish them for the Pot Smoke they smell on their cloths. After which the parents will go to their jobs of which the Father works as a Venture Capitalist buying out Low Income Housing that will later become the site for a Casino...and the Mother will go to work as a High School Teacher with tenure who has over 70% of her student failing Algebra 2 as she complains that it isn't her fault her students are failing as why should she try harder when all she makes for all of 180 days work is $45 Thousand a year plus all benefits as well as recieving 90% of her full pay on retirement after 25 Years.

As both parent come home and watch the news they scream More Money should be thrown at a variety of Black Hole Social Programs that do not work because of Drastic Mismanagement. After all...why fix something by hiring and promoting the people who do their job? When these two people think that if the School Dept. just had closer parking spaces then she could spend more time grading papers instead of walking a whole 300 feet.

In the 1960’s a movement was started. A movement that defined a generation. Hippies, those dirty hippies. Oh they were great! They loved everyone, they stood for equality, they promoted harmony, peace, love, fellowship. Make love, not war. Then… time passed by, they were assimilated into society, they had children, raised those children and then they had grandchildren. Something happened along the way. They cut their hair, they gave up the drugs, they stopped listening to music, they joined “society”.

Where are they today? Those who had the wild orgies, those who indulged in … things, those who fought the system? Where are they today? Well, they’re gone, they no longer exist. They were assimilated by the equivalent of the borg, aka capitalism. They “saw the light”, they were taken in by today’s fad, they were born again hallelujah!!

They’re not Christians, not in the traditional sense, not even in a factual sense, they are part of the fundamentalist evangelical movement that has bastardized Christianity as well as humanity. Not all of them mind you, but the ones who jumped on the bandwagon in the 60’s, then jumped on the disco bandwagon in the 70’s, then on the punk bandwagon in the 80’s, trying to hold on to their youth. In the 90’s they were the dot-com group, then with the turn of the century they were the people screaming to attack Sadam because somebody with the same color skin he had hijacked planes according to the news, so he must be guilty too.

Now, instead of wanting “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for one and all, they concentrate on the right to bear arms, the death penalty and life beginning at erection. They aren’t the same people they were in the 60’s, no, they’re the polar opposite now. They have become what they fought against 40-50 years ago. They became their own enemy.

It was brilliant strategy on the behalf of their opposition. They didn’t have to beat them, they just converted them. It happened without even a whimper. It didn’t take great force, it didn’t take weapons, it didn’t even take money, it just took time.

*Disclaimer*
I'm a minority group. I'm a liberal Christian, a traditionalist in many ways, 100% Methodist in fact. Not non-denominational, not evangelical, but very liberal just like Jesus Christ was... so you don't have to waste your time attacking me and calling me an athiest

We are of the aame ilk you and I. Liberal Christian.

I've become a bit of a philosophical mystic of sorts though along the way and have come to see what Jesus was wanting of us to be what might be called a participatory eschatology, and that's definitely hippy resurrected.

I wish there were more of us, but two or more can make a movement and hey given enough time anything's possible, and eventually actual, that too is liberal Christian, as a hope in some sort of evolutionary Christian mysticism or spirituality.

The United Church of Canada are pretty progressive, too much so, to the degree that they are willing to toss the cross or ignore the ideas of absolute justice and mercy that are still at the heart of Christianity no matter how "progressive".

So what really get's me, and that I think is funny, is how I've come to hold many of the same views of the more conservative fundamentalists, but for all the right reasons, and yet I can't join them either because of their views in a whole host of areas.

Christianity must and will remain relevant in the modern age.

On behalf of Jesus himself I would like to thank you for holding the torch in a very dark world.

I grew up knowing MANY a 60's Hippie. I KNOW what I am talking about.

These people who were given EVERYTHING...are responsible for the current status of the Nation.

For them...it was NEVER really about the activism...it was about taking up a cause in order to score a Babe and all the intoxicating debate after smoking a joint that eventually would lead to screaming...F#$@ President Johnson! And then the taking off of clothes.

I have respect for a persons right to believe as they will in any Religion, Idealism or Notion of what is existence?

And even though the occasional Jehovah Witness has pissed me off as I play in a Band at thus are up nights and sleep during the days as two perfectly dressed Witnesses ring my ddorbell and I thinking it maybe my sometimes drunk Bass Player coming over to sleep as his Ol' Lady has kicked his ass out of the house again....and thus I answer the door wearing a blanket or towel around my waist....I have to listen to some overly conservative woman gasp at something that half the people on the planet have and feel a temporary moment to cover up better.

This moment quickly passes as I am not one to be ashamed of the Human Body and I have a good one as well since being on stage tends to carve ones body out od hardwood after so many years. I ask them what they want and attempt to not be rude...even though every fiber of my being is telling me to be.

My point is that I will respect anyones right to believe as they wish but for JUST ONCE I would like the various Christian groups to RESPECT MY RIGHT to believe as I desire and not have to be forced to get rude standing at my door...half naked...and tired.

This also goes for the Hippie Jesus Freak that is Born Again only after hitting ROCK BOTTOM and now after sinking so low these types are on an Adrenaline High as they put on the local Christian Radio Station that plays easy listening Christian Rock and spreads their arms wide, puts their head back and closes their eyes all the while swaying to the Ode to Joy style Melody as more Adrenaline pumps through their veins causing a massive release of Endorphins as they say to me...I can feel Jesus inside! Why won't you come to Church with me?

This same person only a week ago was trying to score their 8th dose of Heroin as they first had to steal then pawn their Mothers broach. And responded to my worried words telling them I would drive them to rehab with...DON'T YOU EVER TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

Well...I don't like to be told what to do either. Especially what to believe by people who have very little in the way of a right to even suggest to me what they believe is best for me.

I'm an old hippie, successful businessman, entrepreneur, and I see no disconnect at all between the two.

I still practice peace and love in every endeavor I attempt; in personal or business relationships.

It's a philosophy not a fashion. I adhere to the tenants of "Live and Let Live" and it astonishes me that some people find that objectionable.

No, that's incorrect. I do know a few REAL hippies, but those are not the ones I'm talking about. I do know a few REAL Christians and those aren't the ones I'm talking about.
Both groups are good people who are dedicated to what they hold true and valuable.

I'm talking about the ones who just go with the crowd and claim they are something they aren't. The ones who dress the part and put on a show in public. The ones who are lying to themselves and to others in order to "fit in" to the "In-crowd".

The one that put it on my mind is definitely one of the last group. They outnumber the others 1000 to 1. They ruin the names of any group they claim to be part of, they ruin everything they're involved with. If one of those people happen to be a police officer, they make the entire force look bad. If one of them happens to be a social worker, we get the horror stories about social workers. The ones of them who are teachers give all teachers a bad name. They are the lowest common denominator of society, the ones who set everyone back, the ones who ruin whatever they touch.

All the work done by the real hippies who set out to change the world was undone by that group. All the work done by the real christians who reach out to others is overshadowed by that group. All of the work done by Doctors, Lawyers, Police officers, EMT, Firefighters, teachers, preists, nuns, any of the people who once had the respect of the community, who were held as the role models, their standing has been effected by that group who are nothing but "real life trolls" and destroy what others work for.

If you look closely, and really think about it, you will see it. You'll see those who give others a bad name. You'll see the hypocritical Christians, you'll see the capitalistic hippies, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. They want to hold the title but they don't hold the beliefs, they don't hold the actions, they don't hold the essence of what they are claiming, they only want the benefits, not the responsibilities.

Nice write-up, you really put an effort into that. Sadly, your theory is mistaken, your logic flawed.
You fell for the same trap most of the other people did, no doubt thanks to tptb and the media, simply calling them a name and putting them into a box. Hippy.

What you fail to realise is that the ideas that they stood for will never die. Love, Peace, Acceptance, No to War, No to Corruption. The basics.

These things will never disapear like you would like to believe. Peace is a thing that every human being yearns for on some level. Love is a thing that can be shared without cost.

We will never go. I bet there's somebody within a 20 feet radius of you right as you are reading this who shares those exact ideals of your extinct ''Hippies''. We're around you, always:

I hope so. I hope there are many of them around who weren't just talking the talk and jumping on bandwagons. I hope there are many of them that didn't become "born again evangelicals". I hope the large groups I see here are just a strange coincidence.
I've met a few that didn't completely change who they were, but not many. Unfortunately many now preach (very loudly) against the very things they used to say they stood for
