I live in steamboat springs, co and i see them occasionally when the moisture in the air is right. Its beautiful when the lights are different colors.

Yah I had my father in law call me and tell me the northern lights were acting wacky one night. I went outside and we have had nothing but fog at night (which is strange) but I saw exactly what you are talking about, recognized it, called him back and told him to put his glasses on. I told him the northern lights "move", these were stationary.

Light pillars most likely. Ground lights reflected off of ice crystals in the air. I've been fooled by them before. How far away do they appear? Are there street lights, stadium lights, or is their a park in that direction?
