Big sunspot unleashes an intense solar flare

www.msnbc.msn.com

"AR1654 is getting bigger as it turns toward Earth," the website reported. "Not only is the chance of flares increasing, but also the chance of an Earth-directed eruption. This could be the sunspot that breaks the recent lengthy spell of calm space weather around our planet."

Looks like we might have more apocalypse claims soon.

This flare is M-class. "Medium-size M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts in the polar regions and occasional minor radiation storms."

More and worse ones may be coming. "The most powerful solar flares, X-class flares, have the most significant effect on Earth. They can cause long-lasting radiation storms in our planet's upper atmosphere and trigger radio blackouts."

Okay, if something crosses X-20, you can actually ring phones and bang on doors late at night with good reason.

I kinda think of M as standing for 'Might-have-been' on the doom scale.

They are pretty though, eh?

I don't think so.

He/She actually seems to know what they are talking about, or undertaken a little research at least.

Fair enough on the Title. After all, it's BAN and OPs don't choose titles anyway. Media reported it that way. However, I grabbed this as a snapshot as opposed to a link to the live feed and I'm sure folks recognize solar activity in this form. It's kinda flat....and it must be a slow news cycle for MSNBC to call this a story. lol..

It's actually been oddly quiet for awhile now.

You are totally correct. That graph clearly shows a bunch of C flares, and a couple of weak M class flares.

Even Spaceweather.com, which hypes everything has a very low chance for an X class flare.

Like was already said, wake me at X20 or up.

Thank you for posting the graph.

Peace

Our sun appears more calm everyday.
There may be intense solar flares on the other side but we appear to be all clear
on the side facing Earth.
SDO is giving us the clear truth.

I saw a program over the weekend. Coronal Loops = Calm Space Weather
When the coronal loops disappear then the CMEs start shooting out.
