A volcano erupting in Russia's Far East is sending plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and creating a lava lake.

Luckily, hundreds of miles from the nearest residential areas

Gennady Karpov, a volcano expert at Russia's Academy of Sciences in the Far East, said Friday: "There were no lava lakes at Kamchatka volcanos before now. We have never seen this before."

And in the article, it says officials don't think it will end any time soon. Its not creating problems with air traffic yet, but sounds like it might.

Its last eruption had occurred in November after the volcano was dormant for almost 40 years.

Looks like it last erupted November 27th, 2012 and continued erupting until just 10 days ago January 2, 2013. And then it just kicked back into gear. Makes you wonder what might be causing the prolonged and frequent eruptions when it was dormant for so long. And this time, it's creating "lakes"....which it has never done before...whatever that means..?
And it's previous eruption back in 1972 was preceded by earthquake swarms. Anyone following the earthquakes notice any swarms around Nov 27th?

Lakes of lava? Or lakes of water? The heat may be melting ( and evaporating)all that snow in the picture...I can see a lake behind the volcano and to the right,..maybe that's what they mean?

They said lava lake.... So I'm thinking a big puddle of lava that isn't streaming like it shows in some pictures... Not sure though.
That's another possibility though
