This is pretty cool How can they know how smartt they were? I always find discoveries like this fascinating..

these “Hobbits” may be descendants of a group of Homo erectus that were stranded on the island. They walked on two legs and had relatively long feet — another Tolkienesque trait — with sloping forearms, and arms longer than their legs. Their presumed IQ was comparable to that of a chimpanzee.

Pre-human ancestors with a case of dwarfism!

Not only were Homo floresiensis dwarfed in size when compared to other Homo genera, but other organisms on the Indonesian Island of Flores experienced evolutionary dwarfism. This occurs when animal populations are confined to an island, and now they are colloquially referred to as "hobbits" lol. It's likely that Homo floresiensis is a distinct species.

I might add that homo florensis was far more intelligent than a chimpanzee, chimpanzees don't make stone tools, use fire, make fire and hunt animals larger than themselves.
There anatomical evidence that HF doesn't belong in the genus homo, but is an austrolopithicene line that left Africa very early.

Yeah, this is awesome.
To me, bigfoot type creatures just became more real.
