I read that paper you posted the link to but did not see the connection to the OP. Can these little pop crackers really do damage to light armor? I know little about this subject but did some google searching and those exploding targets seem to require a supersonic initiator via a high speed bullet. How would someone place one of those charges on the vehicle and then fire a high speed bullet at it without the vehicle occupants not gunning them down?

One would be amazed, while in Iraq, we did have an AQIZ member try to crawl up on one of our Brads. Of course, he didn't succeed, but the attempt was fairly decent. Used low ground approach and every thing, just didn't have a way to defeat our thermal imagery. If not for that tech, he may have accomplished his goal.

None the less, there are blind spots if one is aware of them, and so, yes it is possible.

Besides, in the case you refer, it may be more effective to get close enough to stick them on via a pole or thrown, maybe even dropped onto, then detonated after emplacement.

The scenario we are discussing is one of civil unrest - in the US no less.

1) Armor troops and mechanized infantry troops are among the most lax and lazy in the US military. They love sitting in their vehicles - period. They do not like to get out, especially when it is hot, cold, wet, or hell even night time. Their security is a joke. Overconfidence is a mech units weakness.

a. If you are also an American with no accent and have access to a combat uniform and some colorful language and a basic understanding of our rank structure you could walk around all day in the supply/HQ area of a mech unit as long as you stood there hands on hips and looked like you belonged no one would be the wiser.

b. I have done it a million times on exercises put on the right tanker uniform (say E6 or so high enough to not get asked questions but not high enough people should know you on sight) walk right into the CP and attend shift change - not a person in there knew who I was. We'd have their whole plan on tape for the intell guys - classic blue falcon.

2. There is no language or culture barrier to worry about, passwords and countersigns are not changed that often and if you have an old one wear low rank and play dumb. Ask for the mess location and follow some crew to their vehicle after. They will all be asleep in 30 minutes of return...

Stay behind operations would be the key here. Because once their main line rolls past you are in the rear with the gear and could walk around almost unchallenged. Just dig a hide, let em roll on by... Plant whatever munitions you want and detonate them on the way out. Personally, I'd blow the fuel and ammo first its spectacular and demoralizing.

well strictly for academic purposes if it is tracked armor finding a away to either jam up a track or cause vechicle to lose a track aibr nothing worse when operating a tracked escavator thsan when you throw a track and don't have the equipment on hand to repair it. occupiants would either have to come out and repair or stay put till support arrives lavs might be harder to immobilize being they use tires instead of tracks. so tactic 2 might entail taking out sensory equipment and communications its kinda har to know where you going with out eyes and its kinda hard to use gps if attenna is disabled.
