This used to be the norm. Along with school rifle teams.

Back then kids werent killing each other in the streets and there were no mass casualty events.

Oddly enough back then machineguns, real machineguns, could be bought mail order C.O.D. from the US government.

Ignorance is a problem in every facet of life. Unfortunately there is a large, self-righteous and, (irony not lost) ignorant, segment of the population who continues to believe that more ignorance in the answer and actively fights to maintain this high level of ignorance we are operating under currently.

To extend their philosophy why not abolish drivers ed? Just ban them from knowing about cars until they one day find themselves in the drivers seat. Stupid idea, right? Well that's how they approach firearms.

Well, you said that you are "all for education". So, what have you learned?

I've learned to be ashamed to be part of the human race. Humans are a barbaric, violent species, with enough of a brain to come up with bigger, more powerful, and more destructive weapons of death -- and they love having them, and using them.

Maybe in my next life, I can be part of a more evolved species somewhere else. Cuz this one sucks.

I'm sorry that you feel that way...I believe that it is a very small percentage of "humans" who crave such things. Most of us, just want to be able to enjoy our lives without being infringed upon.

Personally, I pray that I never have to find myself in the situation of needing to choose between my life and someone else's that wants to take it. But, prudence and planning, and of course the luck of being born an American, have given me the ability to at least make that choice.

I am the sole bread-winner in my family. My wife and children rely on me, to provide for them and to care for them. If I were to fall victim, to an accident, or a disease, my life insurance would take care of them, monetarily.

But, if I were to succumb to a preventable violent act, perpetrated by a criminal, they would have to deal with so much more, emotionally.

Therefore, I take my responsibilities, very seriously! I do what I must do, to ensure that I am here for them. Every precaution, and legal method of prevention, I weigh thoroughly, and incorporate as needed, into my routine.

And, I see this prudence, as nowhere near "barbaric"...

But hear me out..

From watching the AJ debate with that wretch Piers Morgan.. It is clear that this issue has the potential to rip your country apart... As someone who loves the US.. I dont want to see that happening.

To me.. The US constitution is one of the most genius governmental models in history.. It exemplifies true freedom and is something to be cherished and protected..

So a possible solution to calm both sides of the arguement is required..

I propose that gun safety, safe handling etc be taught at school.. It would promote responsable usage.. And the consequences of irresponsable usage.. I believe this approach would be benificial.. And would keep the US constitution in tact..

Education can therefore be the tool to keep freedoms in place..

Your thoughts?

You sound like you belong in the US more than the UK. I totally approve of this compromise. The idea that guns should be locked up and kept from children as if they were a murder-suicide pill is insane. It leads to all of the accidental misfires when children's curiosity does eventually get to them. The first thing my father did with me and what I did with my children is take them out to shoot those guns and to get that curiosity out of their system so they know what the kick feels like and how anything in front of that barrel is going to be obliterated.

My sons FIRST DAY at school they ran out to recess and under the fence was a gun. Three kids picked it up and started running around pretending to shoot. Had my son found it, he wouldn't have done that. Luckily it wasn't loaded. We home school now (but not because of that - it got much worse).

The point of the school story is that you can keep your child in the dark about guns all you like - you can be a gun-free home but you likely surrender you child in to someone else's care for 50% of the year and have no control at that point. If they are ill-equipped to understand the danger they'll just imitate what they see in commercials, television, movies, and video games.

The anti-gun lobby knows full well they have no ground to stand on. There is nothing and no excuse possible to strip lawful and responsible americans from guns and assualt weapons.

We do not live in Utopia. When guns are stripped from law abidding citizens, only the insane and criminals WILL HAVE weapons of mass destruction to hurt and harm, leaving law abidding citizens to their mercy. A lighted match to a sealed apartment filled with pipe cooking gas is fully capable of taking out entire floors of a building.

Banning gun is not the solution. It is suicide and democide as well. The solution lays in curing the real ills of our society.

Some claim policemen are everywhere, but fact and reality is, had they been able to prevent crime when it happens? Very often, victims are left alone to face the brunt of the insane and criminals, unarmed.

When a citizen is armed, chances are, it will take a very desperate, drunk or insane criminal to challenge the law abidding citizen. But then, as the citizen is armed, he/she, even a grandmother only needs to calmly point and click the trigger, and be protected.

The only issue is for the lawful gun carrier to be sufficiently trained to handle a gun. Sometimes, the production of a gun is enough to frighten away most criminals.

But in the face of a hardened criminal who stands his ground, that production would not be enough. He/she needs to DARE to pull the trigger - to aim for weak points to disarm the criminal if there is time, or to shoot straight to end the violence then and there. Each civilised human do have an universal right to defend themselves and their loved ones from man turned beasts.

Thus, those who carry guns must seek for at least a few hours at the range to know how to use it, on what it can and cannot do, and what to do if one faces a criminal with a large easily visible assualt rifle, and MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL - to be prepared to aim and shoot straight, not freeze up.

I do not enjoy writing posts such as these, for it is acknowledgement of the failure of our civilisation and world, in that we had NOT eradicated VIOLENCE to each other, not just from guns but FROM OTHER WEAPONS used.

We chose to blame tools instead of focusing on the root causes of violence, in delusional hope that eradicating tools will eradicate violence. Even our cavemen ancestors were not that stupid, for tools can be used for many varied purposes and were the cause of their evolution to civilisation.

It seems the anti-gun lobby are a bunch worse than neanderthals, awaiting and proposing extinction of undefended mankind by those whom are of the more violent species.

Pragmatism needs to rule.

Law abidding citizens who carry guns, carry a heavy responsibility.

None of them would inflict violence upon another needlessly, except the insane and criminals. Thus may the anti-gun lobby do not presume and cast aspersions upon gun toting citizens as gun nuts.

I remember as a young teen, when I was given a gun, I swagger around like any other, proud and ego filled, a sense of power, and would play around with it, unloaded of course.

But when the first time came for me to use it loaded, I frozed.

Right in front of me was a target my friends had been hunting for. It was the season for it. I had it my sights with it unaware. I could not pull the trigger. My palms turned sweaty. Even though it was an animal, but it had a life, such thoughts filled my mind. I couldnt do it, and that was my last ever hunting trip as an innocent child.

However, when I joined the military, I NEVER hesitated to pull the trigger, for the enemies were well defined. It was either them or me and my buddies. Nor did I hesitated on hunting and cooking animals to feed ourselves then, but only for nourishment and never for the fun of it.

My point I would like to put across is that carrying that gun comes with responsibility, something law abidding citizens must live up to, to do what needs to be done when no other option becomes avaliable, and not freeze up.

No "compromise" necessary. Blue states pols, do your worst, you will be voted out or not. Red states will continue to enjoy constitutional freedom.

Not going to happen, when you consider that the socialist invasion of our government has resulted in more and more education cuts, while education budgets increase. The goal is to create an ignorant, docile populace. Why would the government want to educate citizens on proper gun use, of all things? They want us disarmed.

There is no compromise to the second amendment. Yeah, yeah, it has been infringed upon for years, but the line has been drawn, and Obama is about to step over it.

The people pushing gun control don't care about the children. If they did, there wouldn't be thousands of them ripped out of their mothers every year. We have armed guards in banks to protect the money, but not for our kids? This goes much deeper than that.

Yes...Star for you!

The ultimate hypocrisy that PROVES that it is NOT about those 20 babies, in Connecticut...

That false sense of superiority that gives them the right to "choose" seems to fall on deaf ears, when we "choose" to excercise our same rights! Aren't we citizens of the same Country? Aren't we supposed to adhere to the same laws?

They can choose to kill innocent children, under the color of law, but when we choose to defend our own children, under the same set of laws, then we are outdated and antiquated, hillbillies who are just looking for someone to murder!!!...WHAT???

And they say that WE are delusional, and WE should compromise.....
