It's 2013...Soon you can apply to colonize Mars

Mars One will start the Astronaut Application Program in the first half of 2013. Even before the official start of the application program, Mars One has already received more than one thousand emails from people who desire to be one of the astronauts to live on Mars in 2023.

Once on Mars, there is no means to return to Earth. Mars is home. A grounded, deep sense of purpose will help each astronaut maintain his or her psychological stability and focus as they work together toward a shared and better future.

Mars One will be selecting their astronauts soon. I personally can't wait to see how this unfolds. It's definitely a huge milestone in human history.

How do you think it will play out? Will anyone from ATS be applying?

I can't seem to wrap my head around it. How long will their supplies last? What will they do for shelter? How much communication will they have with Earth? Will they reproduce on Mars? It's fascinating!

NOOOOooo way , not me...
If mars had a atmosphere where one could
grow food, tree's, and such, then i would consider
such a idea a good one,
but i see this as nothing more than sending people to
their death.
It's just a matter of time before they run out of supplies.
then what? not like you can go build a cabin in the woods
and hunt for your food and rough it... there is nothing
on mars.

I see this as a waste of money. Would be a much better idea
to save the cash and when we find a planet that has a atmosphere
that can support life, as well as running water, tree's for oxygen
then send a group there, at least they would have a fighting chance
to survive.

This is just a death sentence for them... there is no real way
to sustain them for long term. What the company is going to
send up a rocket every year with supplies?

Our govt cant even keep people fed here on earth, where food
is abundant, i would not think a company could keep a team fed
and healthy that far away.

If they are unable to stabilize and engineer the surface of Mars to prevent radiation damage to unprotected species, then the only purpose for being on Mars is to say you did it. And even then, you'll only have your astronaut buddies to drink with.

One would imagine colonizing mars will to some extent include terra formation processes. Sign me up

Within the settlement are inflatable components which contain bedrooms, working areas, a living room and a 'plant production unit', where they will grow greenery. They will also be able to shower as normal, prepare fresh food (that they themselves grew and harvested) in the kitchen, wear regular clothes, and in essence lead typical day-to-day lives.

So, apparently they think food can be grown. Also, according to the site, this is going to be like a reality show. They're already selling Tshirts and other merchandise so money might not be an issue. Also, they plan on sending four more people up every 2 years and having the astronauts build additional housing from Mars clay.

Yea, it sounds like something is going to go horribly wrong.

No kidding. It's an irradiated planet with very little atmosphere to speak of and virtually no type of land that has ever been farmed by humans before. Not to mention the gravity, the resources, the social stability and the life insurance policies.

I know it blows my mind. They have to train for 10 years after being selected. The selection process and the training are going to be televised and if everything goes according to plan the launch will be televised also. It's exciting that we get to see this play out through out our life time.

Very true, and I do think it's amazing. I'm excited to see how it goes. I would never volunteer for this, but I'm sure some would eagerly go even if they knew there was almost no chance of survival.

Few weeks back on History Channel or H2 (can't remember) was a lengthy show about the mission in Mars, what are the possibilities, options and how long it will take to reach it, stay there and come back. Everything is thought out in details and with the current technology and also what Mars offers, is possible for astronauts to live there without needing supplies from earth. They can grow their own food, extract their own water and especially their own oxygen. Greenhouse will be one of the ways. Educate your self before making comments of this kind...

this should be in the speculative forum. we barely have the technology to get there, and if we do it will be 3 or 4 people. hardly a colony.

We really don't need to be colonizing anything, especially another planet when we can't even take care of our own. What would we do if there were already people there? Put them on reservations?

Manifest destiny on crack. They want psychologically stable people? I wouldn't classify anyone who thinks bringing human civilization to another planet is a good idea as anywhere near "stable".

I would love to go but I would be at conflict with myself dying on another planet. I wouldn't feel at "home" you know.

I mean the chance to do something no other human has EVER done in our history and, AND to get to relocate to another planet and see the stars.... I wouldn't care if I died before I got there, leaving the planet alone would be an achievement in and of itself. Think of how many shuttles failed. Think of how many of those dead astronauts from time past dreamt of the day the human race could/would attempt this.

If we are to ever hold a seat amongst the stars, we must first accept that seat and seek it out.
