Australia will play an instrumental role on a UN security council committee responsible for applying global sanctions against al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Iran, Foreign Minister Bob Carr says.

Senator Carr said Australia would chair the UN Security Council's sanctions committee, which has authority to determine which persons or entities the al-Qaeda and Taliban sanctions are applied to.

"These appointments are a reflection of our high standing among Security Council members" Senator Carr said.

"We're seen as having the commitment and resources to deliver effective oversight of international sanctions regimes which are critical to Middle East and global security."

The committee is responsible for monitoring international compliance with sanctions regimes and reporting back to the UNSC on apparent breaches.

Senator Carr said Australia's global security agenda in 2013 would also include a renewed push for a global Arms Trade Treaty in the UN.

The proposed treaty would impose new controls on illicit cross-border dealings in weapons such as automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition.

"Our message is it's time for action on global arms control," Senator Carr said.

Whooa! We have stepped it up an notch.

I'm not sure what to think of this to be honest, but for now it looks as if we are in the driving seat.

Question and thoughts below people, I welcome the discussion:

*And please, can we refrain from the "Duh, Australia has got a small weener, it couldn't fight bla bla bla comments" Thanks

Capt

Most likely the UN is softening you guys up so they can hit you up for more funding......

Currently Australia contributes a little over 1percent of the UNs slush fund while the US pays over 22 percent...

If I were you Aussies I would be keeping an eye on that....

While it is cool that we are finally leading something on the international stage (which is long overdue imo), i do think it is probably the wrong thing to be in charge of

Excellent.

This was always going to happen.

Australia is the sleeping Dragon, or, in our case, the sleeping Drop-bear.

Abosolutely, Kind of a big hand ball to me?

At least we're isolated so to speak, but then this brings a whole new dimension to the "Boat people" problem we have here.

It only takes one, and hundreds arrive weekly.

Target Australia has a whole new meaning.

Here is some unaired footage to get you thinking...............

No No No No No... Damn you! We're now becoming complicit in the rape of the middle east.

Has this been done perhaps because we are a temporary member? and in years to come we cant take all the blame as we wont be around?

Sorry Mr Bob Carr, but i read today your comments on Assads speech

But Senator Carr told reporters in Sydney on Monday that Assad's speech "gave no impetus to the movement towards a ceasefire or to a negotiated peaceful transition within Syria."
"There's no encouragement in his words that he's prepared to take the first step to enable that to happen, namely him resigning and removing himself from government.
"Because none of the participants in this bloody, murderous civil war are prepared to engage in a dialogue while he remains president," Senator Carr said.

Did you even listen to the speech you baffling American backed baboon?

Its obvious where this is going and your making sure we are in the driving seat. If you’re going to comment on the word stage at least use your own words and not the USA prepared speech!
