A proxy war is much easier to execute politically than direct intervention. The USA isn't stupid, just rendered ineffective because of politically motivated restraint.

Being involved in this covertly and through proxies in a half-ass way is more destructive and harmful than NO involvement at all.

That small number should not be considered a provocation, or escalation. They are there to man the patriots and defend them near the Syrian border. inside Turkey.

Russia is NOT going to lift a finger to support Assad. You need to stay away from the die-hard conspiracy driven reporting on such exercises.

If it all goes pear-shaped in Syria then Russia requires to have an evacuation plan for its personnel and citizens. This has to be in place, exercised and ready to go. This was already highlighted during December 2012. The large landing ships have already been exercised and visited Tartus during 2012 for this purpose. It would be a massive operation. You have already quote Debka in support of your posts. Remember the last time when Debka was reporting that the landing ships were busy supplying Iskander missiles to Syria? Prior to that last visit of large landing ships were, according to Debka, supplying Marines and Special Forces to assist Assad. You need to take a step away from the conspiracy non-sense.

Moscow prepares plan to evacuate Russians from Syria Rescuers are planning to take around 30,000 Russian citizens out of the country by air and by sea. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense have prepared a plan for a large-scale operation to evacuate Russian citizens from Syria. According to the document, rescuers are ready to take around 30,000 Russians out of the dangerous region. In case of an urgent evacuation, planes from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Defense and Aeroflot, as well as passenger ferries and four large navy landing vessels from the Baltic and Black Sea fleets, will take part in the operation.......

From OUR point of view it may not be a provocation but it could easily been seen as such. That's a volatile area.

There are at least 100,00 Russian citizens in Syria, and there have been troops on the ground in Syria since at least June/July of 2012. At least what has been publically acknowledged. In Dec. 2012, an elite unit was sent. Something also about another small fleet of ships being sent in case they need to evacuate the Russian citizens.
Drama.

Sorry friend, actions speak louder than words and the Russians have defended the Assad regime with far more than a finger so far. Despite overwhelming international condemnation of the Assad regimes brutality the Russians have defended them, even using their veto power at the UN to protect them.

Their actions in that regard should be so loud here that even the most ignorant among you can see the truth for what it is.

Indeed, the deployment of the patriots alone was an act of provocation, but in reality the troop deployment has been so small in that particular case that it isn't a problem.

If we were sending in thousands, then maybe it would be considered an extreme act of provocation.

Problem here is that the Russians and NATO/USA are in this conflict too deep, and that alone could escalate for a multitude of potential reasons, it is inherently provocative and dangerous.

Don't just look at one side here, or from one perspective, you'll miss the most dangerous potential implications for the region, and perhaps the whole world.

This may be a reason also...

The site, at the port of Tartus, is little more than a pier, fuel tanks and some barracks. But it is the last Russian military base outside the former Soviet Union, and its only Mediterranean fueling spot, sparing Russia’s warships the trip back to their Black Sea bases through straits in Turkey, a NATO member.

www.nytimes.com...

Not to say there may be something else in the works, but keeping your last remaining base outside your country may become a top priority...but who really knows other than the Russians and probably certain Syrians..

Oh, I know. I was born and raised with those types of conflicts. Both had beachheads then though. Russia doesn't in this case. Syria? Totally surrounded by unfriendly nations. Unless they attack Turkey across the Black Sea, totally stupidity imo, they have no leverage. I think Slayer is right. This is a crisis control and clean up operation.

Yes, Slayer has a good theory.

Maybe you'll be willing to take on this question:

Do you believe that the Assad regime will go down quietly and escape into exile, or go down with a major act of all out vengeance against their enemies?

Perhaps the Russians are also concerned about that possibility.

Assad vows that he will NEVER leave Syria.

No on the Russian troops or elite units being deployed. It was yet another example of various portions of the media getting it all mixed up yet again. The Russian Navy Auxiliary vessels are mainly crewed by civilians. As the Russian Navy Tanker Iman was eventually deploying to the Horn of Africa it carried a complement of Marines. Standard procedure for such auxiliary vessels. I feel sorry for the Russian Ministry of Defence that have to continually release press statement after various media outlets spin the story in an attempt to make news. Once the die-hard conspiracy type news outlets got hold these Marines were turned into an elite Russian Special Forces group deployed to assist Assad defeat the rebels.

Media Froth in the Wake of Russia’s Tanker in Syria The Iman, a Russian tanker ship that visited the Syrian port of Tartus, has caused quite a stir in the Western and Arab press, which is portraying it as a warship with a unit of Marines on board. So, let us try to work out what is actually going on with the Iman. First, the Iman is not a civilian ship – it is a component of the Black Sea Fleet’s support forces. Second, if the ship is headed to Tartus from the Gulf of Aden, the zone of an international anti-piracy operation, it is certain to have a unit of Marines on board to protect the crew. This, also, has not been denied by the MoD spokesman quoted above. “There is no one on board the tanker but a civilian crew that has been given a security guard detail,” he told RIA Novosti.

This Russian Navy Tanker (Iman) was sending international weather with positional information in Morse Code. Hardly likely if it was tasked with deploying an elite force of troops to assist Assad in Syria

www.abovetopsecret.com...

So there you have it. Yet another completely routine deployment and tasking turned into conspiracy hype.

From another thread:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Seems relevant here.

Since no one seems willing to take on the question in my previous post here, I will.

Assad and his regime have no intentions of leaving Syria, regardless of how isolated they are, if cornered and without any real potential victory against the rebels, they will unleash an unimaginable act of extreme vengeance against their enemies, locally and in the region. The potential implications of such an act has even alarmed their Russian allies. IMO...

Good luck.

Actions that don't add up. You don't deploy a military force that is supposed to be in direct support of Syria via NATO assets and replenish stocks in these ports. They use their veto in the UN for their own interests in Syria. They have a large number of citizens in Syria and also need the naval facilities in Tartus to support the various anti-piracy deployments to the Horn of Africa. The alternatives are having to rely on for example the likes of Greece (NATO) to host such naval assets and it would be a very expensive and put them in an awkward position.

'Russian Navy May Settle in Greece if Syria Changes Regime – Media'

rusnavy.com...

The Russiana already lost established and regular naval port facilities in Libya after Gaddafi was ousted. In reality they don't give a hoot about Assad but they do care about access to a Mediterranean port and their citizens and personnel in Syria. In reality they aren't going to war over it and certainly not with NATO but they do have to consider the security of their citizens if the Assad government collapses. All I see here is forces in position in order to support a large scale evacuation of citizens if required.

It is the easy thing to do to try and keep a customer. Just like the West has taken the easy road to support the rebels. Nobody wants to get in involved. If the Syrian chemical weapons become a real threat the West do the absolute least it can do other than revome that immediate threat. The Russians not only have no interest in doing anything real to help the Syrians if the West go involved they simply do not have the capabilities to. They know Assad is in a losing game. Thier is little loyalty among his forces who are just waiting for a chance to go over to the people. It is only a matter of time, although Russia will act to get its people out, most likely with support from NATO.

As I stated, one of the fleets was sent to evacuate th Russian citizens, if necessary.

m.cbsnews.com...://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57455015/russia-sending-navy-ships-to-syria-amid-uprisi ng/&catid=57455015

"Each ship is capable of carrying up to 300 marines
and a dozen tanks, according to Russian media
reports. "

"Interfax also quoted a deputy Russian air force
chief as saying that Russia will give the necessary
protection to its citizens in Syria."

"We must protect our citizens," Maj.-Gen. Vladimir
Gradusov was quoted as saying. "We won't
abandon the Russians and will evacuate them
from the conflict zone, if necessary."

english.ruvr.ru...

“We want Russian troops to stay in Tartus”: head of Syria’s National Coordination
Committee"

So, either we agree on that, or someones' got some 'splainin' to do.

As for the Elite forces, I was incorrect. It was not Russia, but Iran that sent Elite Guards.

Apologies for that error.

Regardless, it is still drama, as it is much ado about nothing.

It might possibly be a ploy I wouldn't put it past Putin to sacrifice some for a reason to enter into war, or as other poster's declared it might be to get citizens and such out of the country as well as Assad and family/friends.
