A Japanese man has been captured in Iraq and a video released is threatening to behead him in 48 hours if Japan does not pull its troops from the country. Al Jazeera aired the video, showing the blindfolded man surrounded by three masked captors, all shot in front of the banner for al Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group.

"They asked me why Japanese government broke the law and sent troops to Iraq," the man, wearing a white teeshirt, says in broken English.

"They want Japanese government and [Junichiro] Koizumi prime minister, they want to withdraw the Japanese troops from Iraq or cut my head."

One of the militants, who are identified by a black banner as members of Zarqawi's al-Qaeda in Iraq group, then reads out a statement over the kneeling man.

"We give the Japanese government 48 hours to withdraw its troops from Iraq, otherwise his fate will be the same of that his predecessors, Berg and Bigley and other infidels," he says, referring to previous hostages beheaded by militants.

The Tawhid and Jihad have claimed responsibility for many of the kidnappings and beheadings in Iraq, in addition to many other attacks on both Iraqi and Western groups in the war-torn country.

Be interesting to see what the Japanese government does about this.

Its sad that this has to happen to such innocent people, this is just getting to be a regular event now.

They call us infidels! Thats very rich coming from animals who cut innocent humans heads off! My god these people have no intelligence whatsoever, and they dont realise that beheading all these people will have no effect on any country to pull their troops out, beheading these people just makes them look worse along with their feckin misinterpretation of their religious beliefs.

Why don't these people wear some sort of hidden ear or oral GPS tracking device. This way here the location can be pinpointed and this nonsense could be brought to a stop.

Like a One A Day GPS. And if they forget to take it then oh well it's like a broad (no offense ladies) who forgot to take her pill and wound up pregnant.

The Philippines Government has defied international protests and begun the early withdrawal of its forces from Iraq - bowing to the demands of kidnappers in a bid to spare the life of truck driver Angelo de la Cruz.

Reuters is saying the body that was found was not that of the Japanese man:

Reuters
TOKYO (Reuters) - A body resembling a Japanese taken hostage in Iraq was not that of 24-year-old Shosei Koda, the top government spokesman says.

Al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's militant group had said in an Internet video on Wednesday it would behead 24-year-old Koda within 48 hours if Japan did not withdraw its troops from Iraq.
