It was while trying to block a stalker that I took some time to go through some of my security settings and discovered that Facebook incorporates facial recognition software into its code. I know, I know. What the hell am I doing using Farcebook in the first place. Unfortunately for the immediate future its a necessary evil for mostly keeping in touch with family and what not.

Now I have heard all the conspiracy theories around "Oooh! the CIA control Facebook" "The NSA or DOD started Google" All those old chestnuts. But I always took those things with a grain of salt. I mean think about the logistics of running an operation like that, It would have to be MASSIVE!! So I never really took it to heart.

Until today.

Now I'm not sure how many of you are aware of this FACT or not but I certainly was NOT aware that Facebook uses Facial recognition on all picture we post. Now given the fact that there must be hundreds of pics of users who dont realize this and have their pictures tagged by others It seems your digital image has been tagged and processed. Now I have nothing to hide so I dont care but I think its a bit underhanded on the part of Facebook to do this without fully informing the userbase to how this might possibly work against them by people of nefarious intent, so to speak. Apparently Europe agrees with me and has forced Facebooks hand and made them turn it off for the entire continent. But thats the only part of the world its not in operation from what I can tell. Its being used here in Australia, but we have the population of a small Island like 25 mil America with their 300mil plus population is like a a Roast rack of Honey Glazed Ham to them.

BUT they forget to mention its ONLY for Europe..

Look take from it what you will but to me this does not bode well for our privacy.

boggles my mind why anyone would want to use such a thing as fakebook. you would think by now that the stooges who use this would have moved on to something less intrusive. fakebook is going down and will go the way of the rest soon.

I wish that was the case but there are so many people that have networked on Facebook and are creatures of habbit. Its going to take something we haven't seen yet to do it and the only thing I can think of is Brain Implanted access to the web.

I JUST WANT TO CLARIFY THAT I DON'T SUPPORT THIS I MERELY SUGGEST THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL TOPPLE FACEBOOK.

Something like this

well my friend i don't think we will get there from here, i truly do not. i think long before technology saves us, governmentsbankers will kill us or enslave us, or attempt to, to the point, we will wish to be dead. focus on the BIG picture and the rest is just crumbs.

when most people can't even afford to feed themselves fakebook will be nothing but a fleeting memory.

just ask the human beings of Spain and Greece what they think of fakebook at the moment.

edit, i realize you don't support this and i appreciate any and all pertinent data that ATS members bring here.

well i will agree to disagree because i think the only reason it's taking so long to crumble is the wealthy want it to go slowly as possible, lest too many people will notice just how screwed they have become, through no doings of their own. they know very well that the current fractional reserve banking industry is a giant scam and has an end, so they want to usher in yet another scam system to replace it and at the same time appear to be our savior. brilliant if you ask me but then again i never thought for a minute the wealthiest people in the world were dumb, ruthless but not dumb.

I am creeped out by all the people i know and have known, knowing what i like and who else i know.
It feels rather awkward making random assertions to all acquaintances at once.
I'll give FB a miss, even though apparently that makes me suspicious

Yes I am well aware of what facebook is, but as I have said for some people it is the only way to stay in touch when you are busy and have families that span continents and time zones.

Its a bit pointless saying well I dont use it who cares it doesnt effect me. EVERYTHING the majority does effects you. Dont be deluded into thinking you are special and exempt. And currently the majority uses Facebook and they are using that as a tool to monitor and control the masses which by proxy effects you.

it's far from the only way to stay in touch with family and friends worldwide, heck you can have your own private family and friend forum, members only, to do that and it would be much more secure. fakebook is ego, not staying in touch, it's almost all ego driven, look at me i'm so special i can chit a diamond out of my ass.

i of course do not consider every fakebook user to be this way, but i would imagine it's a very large portion that does.

I probably am a "moron" for sticking on Face Book, but I always used it to post/save-to-wall and share, 'Truther' stuff. And let me tell you, FB had been --unrelenting-- in it's persecution of me. Blocking and banning me, making me go through security gate obstacle courses to get back on, calling my cellphone over again with a new passcode to be re authorized back on. Pesently, they blocked most of my newsfeed, where I only see about 3 sources, instead of all 70 I liked or subscribed to, so far.
If you YouTube "facebook censorship", peoples' very interesting exposes come up. Similar problems to mine.
FaceBook overlords === c**k s*****g sons of b*****s. And I will remain a boil on their a*ses none the less and no the hey.
The other night I removed all of the photos of me ( which are all more than 35 year old snapshots of me ) and I put a picture of my butt. ( A cute tight high 19 year old one [ circa 1978 ] however. )

Just because I am anti status quo doesnt mean my family is. And regardless how little they care about in regards to the bigger picture they are still my family. And in regard to Facebook not being the only way to stay in touch you are right. But its the one chosen by the lot of my family.

Look your point is 100% valid and most people use it for all the wrong reason, Mid you reasons that WE say are wrong because ultimately what other people do is none of my business I just dont want facebook sharing my info with people other than family and close friends. Surely thats not too much to ask for?

It's not only Facebook using this software. Take a look at Googles Picasa software. It allows you to name the faces in all of your photographs and then after a few dozen times of naming a person it starts making educated guesses and suggesting matches for that person in other photographs. I had a few thousand photographs on an external hard drive and it only took a matter of hours to name every person in them. I recently scanned all of my wifes grandfathers photographs onto the hard drive and this software began accurately naming baby photographs taken in the 1930's and 40's of people that it had only named previously in their adult years.
Now If you have tried Googles image search online you will realise how powerful that search is, you can upload a photo and it will tell you, pretty accurately where that picture appears online. The Picasa software allows you to upload your photos onto googles own photo storage space with the information of the tagged people retained. How much of a jump would it be to implement a facial recognition search into Google image search ? once they have enough images of a named person on their servers it wouldn't be hard to then trawl the net and pick out other images that contain that persons face.
I have an image of a friend taken in the upper tiers of Wembley stadium prior to a Muse Concert, Picasa wanted me to name every single face visible on the photograph (thousands of them). Imagine if I had a huge server with millions of faces tagged and stored on it ? I would then know that those people were in a certain place at a certain time on a certain date and those people would not have even been aware of a photo being taken.

Imagine being questioned by the police and being asked if you was at a certain place at a certain date and time five years ago and you can't remember where you was on that date. They could then turn to you and say "Well you are in the background of this photograph taken by a Japanese tourist in that place and at that time. They uploaded it to "X" site after their vacation and a quick Google search easily identified you"

Scary thought!

I know everyone does (and has a right to do) his own choices, but I would like to point out saying "it's the only way" is very bad excuse for being either lazy, ignorant or just too sheepish (no offense) to go against the "mainstream". I have been using (personal) computers since 1991 daily and I'm a huge fan of electronics, gadgets, phones and whatnot. I have never even thought about joining to Facebook (or any other major "social media site") and quite likely never will.

I study in university of applied sciences, have 8 siblings, mother, a bunch of friends and I work as a DJ driving all around the country. I have _zero_ problems keeping in touch with the people I want and need to. I DON'T need to read bull# about them 24/7 nor do I have to know how awesome was their cat, dog, friend, neighbor, child or any other social porn update they prefer to update into their FB status. I have a perfectly good phone (Samsung Nexus) to call them with - if I have something to say or just miss them. My messenger (which will be Skype now) reaches those people who think like me (as in, it's not too much to press that sign in -button for MSN every now and then). I can use webcam/video call if I need to/want to.. For example I do video calls with my DJ friend who works at China now, 12 000km from me. Most of the time we communicate through MSN and traditional SMS messages.

I have friends who have 300-400 facebook "friends" and I find it utterly sad and pathetic. If/when they start to just play with their phones/facebook and ignore me or our other friends when we meet, I just ask them to either leave or turn off the phone/facebook if they cannot control themselves. (And most cannot.. as sad it is..)

I'm sure Facebook can be used "sensibly" as much as any other device or software, but in my experience, 99% of people don't.. I also know from my own experience it's a HUGE manipulation tool, so I don't see the point of giving that power over me to anyone, be it for what cause ever.

At one point (about two years ago) I was threatened to sack from my job because I declined to make myself a dj profile and an account for FB to "keep in touch" with my co-workers and financial boss. I simply told him that it shall be not my problem, if you think it's a good reason to fire me. Never talked about the issue after that.. still doing my job as normally and email and phone has delivered me all the information I need for my work, no need for trendy FB account.

4-6 years ago nobody needed, cared or wanted Facebook. It's quite bold to argue that there is no other way to "keep in touch" with your close people. Most people just prefer to fill their days by reading utterly stupid and pointless updates from people they hardly know or care about and call it "communication" or "keeping in touch with friends" and whatnot.

And that shall be your right, but remember there are A LOT of other choices too.

The only concern the makers/owners of Facebook have with us is our potential as consumers/clients and their ability to get sales from us. If any organization wants to monitor and control us to the paranoid depths some claim sure they could use Facebook, but I'm pretty sure they could already monitor every single thing you do on your computer, so Facebook really has nothing to do with that.

There is an easy resolution,, close out your account and live in the real world.
My GF's daughter is 32,, she posts every daily event, pictures, conversations, trips
If someone texts her about some insignificant event,, she posts that..
and she has friends she has never met. For some reason, since she became a member on facecrack,
she has lost all ability to function normally in life. All her work duties and home duties have taken a back
seat to facebook. And I thought my addiction To ATS (about 2 hours a day) was pathetic, she cant seem
to put the phone down or not use her computer for social emptiness.

Who needs facial recognition when soo many already have every personal picture of themselves
on the net already

in a way you are correct, but ask the kid who posted about how he hit 2 cars while drunk driving if he would have been hauled away by saying he did that in a text, or sms, e-mail or phone call, no he wouldn't have been.

so to say the info people so foolishly put of fakebook is harmless and only used for marketing is not correct.

again though it's their choice what they post online, i think people should be fleeing the likes of facebook by the millions, if they know whats good for them.
