Mother nature is what destroys roads. Ice and rain/snow. Then the salt we put on them. Look at some of the roads in the desert haven't been redone in years and still are fine for the most part. We need to make roads last longer rather than keep fixing them with old methods. Sure it might cost a bit more but they will last longer a road nowadays is just plopped on top of the old one if it's concrete and if asphalt they recycle it and redo it every few years. There has got to be better materials or combination we could use.

So when the goverment offers tax incentives to buy a fuel efficient vehicle (cash for clunkers and the like) then turn around and tax you for your environmental friendly purchase this is not hypocritical?

Not at all.

Take for example hydro electric rates and water comsumption charges here in Canada.

Utility companies were preaching the virtue of conservation of these resources. The public responded admirably, saved hundreds if not thousands of megawatts and millions of gallons of water.

The same companies were complaining of budget shortfalls a year ot two later, and in order to meet expenses, they upped the rates well in excess of inflation.

Now we pay more, for much less use. Go figure.
