(AP) — Four people, including an armed suspect, died after an hours-long police standoff Saturday at a Colorado townhome, authorities said.

Police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said a SWAT team was called after gunshots were heard at the Aurora, Colo., home at about 3 a.m. Investigators said three victims, all of them adults, appeared to have been killed before officers arrived.

Carlson said the suspect shot at officers at about 8:15 a.m. and was killed during a gunfight about 45 minutes later when police entered the home. It remained unclear if officers shot the suspect or if he shot himself.

I think this is from a bit earlier before the shooter was killed.
Apparently one hostage escaped through a window and alerted police, the gunman killed the 3 others and when confronted by police, started shooting at them.

That is at least the second time major gun violence has hit that town. I think we should ban Aurora.

I think I am getting sick of every single piece of gun violence making headline news. It is more than obvious that the media is going to focus on every single incident right now. Huff Post ONLY shows the incidents that have innocent people dying. They skip right over all the people who's families are saved by guns.

The take the guns away bend is pissing me off. I am not even an NRA guy and I am getting mad about it. People need to focus on the reasons for the gun violence not the gun. The USA is going to hell in a hand basket.... I have come to hate it here. Three weeks in Costa Rica did not help.

This is so sad yet again to witness this.

My thoughts go out to all the families and loved ones who are near to those killed.

Sadly YET AGAIN this is also going to call for all the Pro Gun and Anti Gun people on ATS to once again fill up all reasonable space on the new topics within the next couple of weeks with all those arguments that are now starting to get more than tedious repeating the same things over and over again.

Kindest respects

Aurora Co. is a gang ridden urban wasteland. It is the eyesore of beautiful colorado. Why are there not threads about the DAILY murders in chicago, new york, detroit, wash. d.c.? Nothing to see here, trust me.

They are reportedly relatives. ON ANOTHER NOTE unrelated to bknapple32, If he had not used a gun, he would have used other means. By the way, the POLICE shot HIM with a gun. You gun bashers are really beating a dead horse, it is getting kinda funny how whiny you all are. Perhaps you need to find your self in a situation to protect yourself and your family to reallly appreciate the gun as a tool of defense.

Well, pro-gun vs. anti-gun, aside...
It sure is interesting how the nation has it's attention shifted back to Aurora, just hours before the other guy's trial, begins...
Talk about, "baaaaaaaa baaaaaaaa"...

Yes, it is terrible. No, it's not an "Aurora" thing or even a "Colorado" thing. There are many areas of Aurora, some very well-off, some not so much, just like any other city. Chicago has wealthy areas, but the shootings largely occur in the poorer areas, still, "Chicago" is discussed when talking about gun violence. I've seen, on different sites, "OMG, CO is soooooo dangerous, I'm not going there again!" sentiment. I say, great! We don't need any more people moving here. So be it!

Let's see this for what it is: killing a bird with two stones. One, "mass murders" are all of the media's rage right now (no pun intended), so they're covering what sells. Two, Aurora's murders will be covered more because of what happened with the theater shooting. This story has both, so you bet it's going to make mainstream coverage-everywhere.

I'm in Colorado, and though I'm not particularly fond of Aurora, I can tell you it isn't the Wild West there like the news makes it out to be. ANY and EVERY shooting is being covered EVERYWHERE because it is what is in the public's eye AND because, and I hate to say it, there is a fear campaign happening right now that aims to scare people into giving up their rights. Plain and simple. Scare the people enough, they will gladly give it up in order for the guise of being protected from the scary people. I guarantee you what we'll see soon are women "mass murderers". When that happens, people will be more afraid because it won't be just the stereotypical depressed or mentally unstable middle-class white guy doing it, it won't just be the violent video game-lover 20-year-old, or the minorities killing each other... it will be all people. You watch. I'm not pro-gun, mind you, I'm anti-govt shenanigans.

Take this story for what it is: a sad story that is getting plenty of air time because of recent events that are being played out again and again every minute of the day, all just to make you scared.

I was watching a program the other day that made the claim, the way the media covers these type of events, inspires others, because they see the amount of attention they get.

Well, to be inspired to go on a shooting rampage, one must be pretty far gone already. That is what I am really having trouble wrapping my mind around - what kind of nightmarish ingredients are required to brew forth a murderous raging psychopath like this? I am really asking - while probably involved, I don't believe pharmaceuticals alone are capable of totally annihilating one's inner moral compass, as obviously happens with these people.

It's good to see people settling down but i personally think the Whiny or Whiney gun bashers comment was not really needed and probabably a little unsavoury towards other people who might take this to offence as this will only further add to more agressive comments from other posters and keep the famous and tedious G.U.N debate spamming out what used to be a great conspiracy site.

Can't we take this occasion to discuss why these unfortunately sad events are happening?

Just a loud thought

This is the topic that SHOULD be at the center of everyone's focus!!!

What is the motive? How on earth could a lunatic, consider carrying out the events, like those of late? To what end? What is their thought process that allows them to conceive, and then believe that fulfillment of their plan, would satisfy their needs or desires?
Obviously, the OP is unrelated, to the other heinous crimes, that have been the subject of most recent conversations, with the sole exception of location. But, it still begs the question of WHY!

And I think since these shootings are only happening because of the push against the second amendment that is part of what's going on and therefore legit.
