I have a friend who purchased a new PC, it's running W8.
Came with a trial of Kaspersky Anti Virus.

The Trial is up... I was going to suggest using Microsoft Security Essentials, but don't
see it for W8.

Whats the best "free" alternative Anti Virus for W8 ?

I've used Commodo in the past, as well as AVG, I like Commodo better than AVG.

Thoughts?

I agree with previous posts but I suggest Malware Bytes as a second defense. You can get an OEM Pro copy from a computer store for 19 dollars or so and it's a good cheap investment to stop the bad guys. My best,

I don't have Windows 8 but I have used AVG on XP & Win 7 for a while now and haven't had any issues. Of course though you need to stay on the nice sites, lol.

Yeah windows defender is the suggested one from me

Windows Defender takes forever to do scans, third party antivirus products scan so much faster. Though it is good that Windows has a built in AV now since people tend to let their paid antivirus programs lapse so Windows Defender would kick in after a certain amount of time so their system isn't left as a sitting duck for malware.
