Protip: I'm fully behind the OP on this one.

I just resent your accusation that we're conditioned to rely on the government to save us.

Please, I don't want to derail this thread and the OP has every right to ask a MOD to delete the following comment, but I just need to reply.

OK, I understand, but I hope you've registered with or you're an active member of, Britain's gun lobbyist (for example, the Gun Trade Association; various shooting organisations).
I mention this because I think it was 2011 there was a report from a Professor,,,, Wait,my wife found it.

Professor Peter Squires, professor of criminology and public policy, has given "six out of ten" to the recently-published Home Affairs Select Committee Report on Firearms Control.

"A second reason our gun laws are a mess has to do with the substantial changes in the UK illegal gun supply and the problems this causes, with which the gun laws since 1968 have scarcely kept pace. For example in 1968 we had not yet encountered today's problems with realistic imitation firearms, with convertible weapons, gas cartridge weapons, CS gas weapons, reactivated weapons, and air-powered and BB weapons modelled upon authentic firearms. Today, such weapons account for around 50 per cent of our gun crime statistics and as many as 20 per cent of the crime guns submitted for analysis to the National Forensic Science are conversions.

I've read so many time here that the UK has such a low gun crime statistic compared to America.
Could this be the reason?

"The committee acknowledged the limitations of gun crime data recording but did not propose changes. Home Office data will, presumably, continue to record only 'gun-enabled crime' and the many illegal possession charges and prosecutions (punishable by up to five years imprisonment) will go unrecorded, there by misrepresenting the scale of gun crime.

www.brighton.ac.uk...

I hope you understand, I holed nothing against you, it's your Government and the people who blindly march step with them, falsely believe the Government has their best interest in mind.

Update!!!

Come to find out the guy that tried to rob us was a 22 year old boy who actually went to school with one of my kids. The vehicle he was in belonged to his mother, and he had sneaked off in it without her permission. His mother gave him two options: either go to drug rehab or she would press charges on him herself for unlawful use of her vehicle. He chose rehab and was escorted there by by uncle and another officer. I wish him luck and hope that he gets his life together!

Actually , I'm not.
And I support the 2nd Amendment, but with a few tweaks to it.
You didnt need a gun that shot 200 rds a min to do what you did.
Im for handguns for home protection, and long guns for hunting.
Everything else is designed for 1 thing, killing humans quickly.

The people who are for the "tweaking" don't realize the American people were supposed to be "the militia."

We're supposed to have military grade assault rifles because we are the military.

Star!

Who knows, not only did you spare his life that night...you might have just saved his life in the future. I know rehab has a pretty low sucess rate, but who knows? What you did that night might have been the best thing to ever happen to that kid.

Wouldn't it be awesome if like in 5 years you get a knock on your door and it's him come to apologize and thank you for paving the way to his success in life?

next time, let them take the tools and stay in the house ,just let your dog out to protect your property,in fact get another one or two dogs, and feed them theif as often as you can.

Its your inborn right to protect your life and the lives of your family or others, property is not a valid reason to kill a person,so next time sit in your rocker with your rifle sights on the guy through your window and contemplate his fate--hopefully you are not having a bad day and you let him live if he touches your window or door.
You are more important then tools, tell your husband to double check his insurance policy and to build himself a dog run connected to his garage like I have and put two rottys inside it.They are very quiet when trained right and you will hear a prowler scream before you hear your dogs bark.I also store their food in the garage and keep em hungry,ha ha ha ha.

Its way easier getting out of your dog biting someone a few times than it is to explaining why you took their head off with a rifle ,and a lot safer for you and your family-----all guns have done is put good dogs in the unemployment line, after all they are supposed to be doing a job. When I lived in a city I had a Rotty with me on every trip to the cornerstore or early evening jog,I never felt I needed a gun. And I was given LOTS of room all the time --everywhere when he was with me.And no NO ONE EVER petted or touched him when he was on the job with me.

No more Rambo moves, guns are for self-protection and hunting, when you left your house you became a hunter not a defensive citizen. Its better I tell you this than a judge, the last thing your Hubby needs is to be coming home early from work to bail you out of jail on a manslaughter charge you got for protecting his tools.

On the other hand if your dog gets to feast on thief ,you might get a little press coverage and be able to stud that sucker out for a few bucks if you are on the ball.

Good move, you can't count on the police to keep you safe or protect the loss of your property. They'll come by after and wipe up any mess, sure, if that's what you need. I would also only ever use a firearm to defuse a situation rather than complicate it. In your situation the gun didn't really even need to be loaded.

This is my attitude here, as well. If at any time the evil doers want to give up the garbage, I will welcome them in too!

That is exactly why I own guns as well. And ammo. Lots of ammo.

You were right not to shoot him, though. Kinda hard to explain self-defense when your perp's arms were loaded with goodies. The only thing I might have done differently would be to hold him til the police got there.

Flame away, peacenik hippies. This lady did the right thing all around, so you have no legs here. Go troll another thread.

And??????

I don't need you to tell me what I need, no more than you need me telling you the same.

Hand gun, long gun, cannon, whatever, they all kill quick.

People say "assault weapon" and freak out. Do you even know how many .32cal pellets are in a 3.5" 12ga shotgun shell? Do you? One of those is like unloading 18 to 21 rounds out of a pistol ALL AT ONCE. And just what are those rounds for?? Go ahead, say Deer.

To late, and you better hope mine never meet yours,ha ha ha ha.

I have owned guns my entire life and hunted and killed many things,I have been shot at with guns had a hole put in my jacket collar by a retarded farmer,I was a farmer and I know the retarded ones when I see them or read their posts.I have lived in big citys and had guns pulled on me during robberys more than once.So what. You are still an idiot and guns still arent for protecting your possesions, only lives. That is americas problem, where they go astray,Canada as well, protecting your property with a gun is not acceptable.Police protect your property with their guns, you protect your life with your guns.End of story.

Who do you think you are fooling with your crap.

Guns are for protecting lives not property.

People shouldnt risk their lives over money or property.

Get dogs as I said and use the brain you were born with.

There is nothing worse than big mouths with limited analytical abilitys who are armed with guns.

No shooting people unless your life is in danger.Domesticlly that is.To defend ones country is a different dynamic.

You dont need a college degree to grasp common sense.

There should be an aptitude test before you can buy your guns and morons should be banned. It would save us a lot of trouble,if you cant get this god save us all.

Guns in the USA should be made leg to carry unless you have a hunting license. That's the bottom line to stop all the shootings. But because they make money the federal government turn a blind eye. There will be more big shootings unless Obama puts his foot down and changes the law now not later. He is POTUS he has the power but his Bilderberg friends sway him otherwise.

We could also have another thread by someone who believes "Why People Like Me Shouldn't Have a Gun." I know a lot of hot heads who lose their temper who could easily cross over and do the unthinkable. There's two sides to every story.

I just think gun owners our too dramatic. Banning assault weapons/semi automatic weapons is not banning handguns or your hunting rifles. I mean really, what's the purpose of owning a semi automatic rifle or hand gun? It's clearly the popular choice for mass shootings.

What's the point of making cars that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds or top speeds greater than 75 MPH? Why are people allowed to put 44" mud tires on their trucks, 33" should be enough, who would ever have a use for that? Why allow people to buy more than a six-pack of beer per day? Who needs to drink that much anyway? New York has already started down that path with their large soda ban... I'm not a fan of soda, but I think that whole situation is pretty ridiculous.

It's called freedom of choice my friend. Something that once made America great - unfortunately we are slowly losing this. We need to hold individuals responsible and not objects. Why should 100+ million responsible gun owners be punished because of a handful of crazy people? Even though cars kill more people than guns in America, you don't see any push for crazy restrictions on them...

There are approx 2 million uses of a gun for self defense every year, and I bet that semi-auto handguns are the popular choice for that task - much more popular than for mass shootings. In the last 6 years there have been about 25 mass shootings - that's about 4 per year, hardly an epidemic.

www.fbi.gov...

Knives killed many more people than rifles. Or rather, people with knives, since the knives themselves didn't do anything...
