Well said Durden.
Pulling out is really no solution. That way nothing is ever going to improve.

Maybe if we pulled out and made them find a new home they'd stop showing preference to us. I don't see them reacting to us the same as they do third-world countries...but then, we're the sugar-daddy, right?

I never have cared for the UN...and I've never wanted the US to be part of it. But since the autrocity I affectionately call - Saddam gets a palace, Khofi and Co. gets a billion - they really turn my stomach.

Please, for those who think the UN is so useful and so benevolent give me one single dispute they have been able to deal with effectively to date.

NOT A DAMNED ONE. Their whole "purpose for living" is nonexistent...they haven't prevented anything. They're real good at levying sanctions...but now we know why, don't we! There's money in it!

Crap...in 60 years they haven't been able to handle the Israeli-Palestine issue. In 60 YEARS all they have done is screw that up worse.

For the life of me I can't figure out why those planes went into the WTC towers when the UN headquarters was right there....just a short trip down the street boys!

If the Arab world wants to be mad at somebody they need to look at the UN - rapers, robbers, and bureacrats doing absolutely nothing they were created for.

bah! I've worked myself into incensed.

I wish that the US would pull out of the UN.

I think the US government is corrupt and should have no say in the actions of the UN.
This way when the US steps out of line, again, full trade sanctions can be put on the US. I don't know why the EU is stopping its current sanction on the US at this current time.

When people talk about why hasn't the UN gone in to battle situations, they are missing the point about what the UN is for. It is to try to find peaceful alternatives to war and ending war.

If this is mainly a matter of not accepting economic corruption, then I'd say I find it rather contradictive to say you'll be better off by pulling out of the U.N. than try and be a part of solving it. Are you of the opinion you have no economic corruption and/or hidden agendas whatsoever in this respect in the U.S.? If not, would you rather move out of your own nation as well or would you want to be a part of solving this problem?

NO! I don't want to be a part of fixing anything in the UN. You're not listening to me. The UN does not hold enough worth in my eyes to bother trying to fix it.

They don't do anything! They can't handle small matters let alone have the gonads to handle a big one.

You are continuing to ask me these questions when you have not responded in turn to my request to explain to me ONE ISSUE OF RELEVANCE they have been able to earn their keep with.

When has their existence been justified?

Respectfully, I'll have to answer that question with another question. Would there be a larger or lesser number of shark attacks if we were to remove shark nets in the exposed areas?

Clearly we're going to notice the problems when they occur; not the ones that are defused before they actually happen.

And again, maybe the best way possible to solve this particular problem really is to pull out. And I respect those who are of this opinion. But my opinion is that it wouldn't. I feel it would be a more effective solution to be a part of solving whatever problem there is.

The only way that the UN could be "fixed" is if its mandate was completely changed to that of a "global monitoring group" that was a clearinghouse of information on what is happening.

THEN, it would be a place where every nation could come together and hear about what is going on and then run home and decide how they AS SOVEREIGN NATIONS are going to respond.

That's it...that would fix everything. And I can't help but think it would significantly cut the membership fee required as well.

WE (and every other sovereign nation) do not need to have any group tell us who we're going to sanction, who we're going to play nice with, period...particularly when they can't treat every nation with parity. And they can't. That's clear.

Then, why would you want to leave when you're in such good company?

I'm a little confused as to why the US remains a member, they only pay attention to the UN when the initiative suits their purpose.

191 members, and I would tend to believe that the US is the biggest member (pun intended)
UN Members

Leaving would hardly enable you in having a hand in fixing it, but I guess with such a large turn-out for the burning of the UN flag it would be hard to sway the general concensus within the States.

So no actual cooperation; merely a sharing of information? Well, that would kind of defeat its initially intended purpose, wouldn't you agree?

It is a global monitoring group amongst many other things.

ahh UN and the US.

As far as I see the US sees the UN as a threat to their dominance on the international scene (why should 3rd world nations get a say?! they're only poor and live on some unknown place on the planet!
) and we all know the US doesn't like being held accountable for anything especially to all the dictators and socialist europeans that run the place and who don't know what they are talking about!

The UN is used as a political tool for the US govt to provide some sort of legitimacy for its military campaigns, but when the UN doesn't agree with the US and treats it like every other member it has a hissy fit, ignores the will of the international community, goes and wrecks things and then comes and asks for help to bear the load of the mess they created in the first place.

Sadly enough, we all need the UN. There has to be an international organization, if we let the UN go the way the League of Nations went things will turn for the worse.

We must keep progressing to keep on tearing down national barriers and nationalist BS and realise that we are one people, one world and one community.

It's going to take a long, long time but the future of mankind will be a one united world government (we'll see the growth of powerblocs in the 21st century, notable examples such as the EU). And we are going to see many more wars before this will happen. Many more horrible horrible wars that millions will die in. I want to see some sort of international body that has credibility and can maintain global peace and order.

And I hope this will be for the better, none of this NWO bs just a world govt that ensures peace, no poverty and prosperity for all.

thanks,
drfunk

What's the big deal? It's just a flag -
The US flag is burned everyday, hardly anyone cares including Americans, why should anyone care if a UN flag is burned.
It's nothing.

I have rarely heard of outrage of the US flag being burnt - US soldiers being burnt and dismembered before cheering crowds does however cause widespread outrage.

So what if the UN flag is put to the flame?

No one cares.

Rest of world BURNS YANKEE FLAG! Now that would be a great day!

Just look at the blatant contempt the US regurlarly shows the rest of the world, they would rather have the planet to themselves.. other people and nations just seem to be in the way.

On the other hand the rest of the world is soo devided they could not and will not (for some considerable time) stand up collectively and demand an apology as this is an affront to the ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD!

But even US presidents attend UN council sessions just to say : "oh by the way #$% #$% the lot of you!" Really thats it, that is the complete US agenda when it comes to the UN. Get the rest of the world in a room so you can point and laugh at all of them at once.

Um, NEWSFLASH.

The rest of the world burns the YANKEE flag quite often, in fact, so friggin often it hardly ever makes the news.

We burn the Un flag. Good.

As long as a person pays with their own money for a flag, its theirs to do with as they wish. Its free speech.

Constitutional amendments banning flag burning are unconstitutional. period.

Along the convention center street in downtown Seattle there are flags displayed from many countries. maybe someday ill buy one of each and burn them for fun.

Ill start with the UN flag. if people can burn the US flag, then its all free speech to defile whatever flag of any nation i chose.

Free speech works all ways.

Im glad they burned the UN, the un is completely pointless and honestly I believe have no bearing on world issues. I think we should leave the un and all our allies to and form another organization that will actually get something solved. I dont know if any one has seen the movie team america yet, they have the best scene regarding the U.N. and how its just completely pointless, what is there purpose anyway i dont see one, to me the U.S. is the un we are the only countrey that really ever handles world issues, screw the un

The only way I can advocate the UN is if membership requirements were EQUAL. That is, the US pays the same amount as every other country, and provides the same resources as every country, because as it stands, the US pays for 30% of this pathetic organization.

look at the situation, who created it? think for a sec of how our policies changed as soon as the UN was created, how we started becoming interventionalist, we started wars that had no concern of our own but with enforcing UN agreements, the UN trying to force its ideas and policy on the USSR probably was what made them act aggressive towards us because they thought we were trying to encrouch on them and then it just turned into a big mess and here we are today....just put it all together and ask yourself if creating the UN was a good idea.

the founding fathers of the US warned of interventionalism, thats exactly the UN does, it intervenes in everything and its policy rubbed off onto us due to us being part of it.

Interesting. Many of us see no reason to stay in the UN. Non-US folks belittle us for it, or want us to stay and fix problems... It still seems to boil down to us again.

Your various posts and jibes are kind of like, "Look US! You have to play with all the marbles all the way we want ... All the time ... Or you are no good".

Mayhap the Common Market could/should hold off any marketing/trade efforts with the US. Maybe it could go back to the way it was Pre-WWII. When we didn't really want to get involved in the European/Asian War. It seems that we were all really doing ok (whatever that may be) then as well. Not a lot of fighting was going on here, as I recall reading in the history books.

The UN is corrupt, much like a cancer. And, though there are holistic methods of "curing" cancer, it often seems that the better strategy is to start with a surgical excision, then a medicinal fix.

I'm not anti-any country, nor am I against any race or people. It amazes me that we seem to think that we have to have an organization like the UN to help us all get along. It is apparent there is plenty of anti-US sentiment in some of the posters here. I daresay that if we could sit down and talk about it that much of the misunderstandings on both sides could be worked out ... Without a large black-hole, money sink, like the UN.

I guess I'm wondering if the UN is worth fixing or if it has simply been in place for so long that we are afraid to not have it, warts and all?

i want to point out 1 or 2 things.
the UN has kept US soldiers safe from certain weapons of mass destruction and certain conventianal weapons.
firstly if you pulled out of the UN would you pull out of the geneva convention?
why dont you pull out of the international law thing too and dont accept any human rights and let your goverment do anything it wants to you?
or would you like to see more brutal and sadistic bio, chem, nuclear weapons and human right breaking genetic manipulation.
you say "we cant be told by anyone not to do anything" well i ask you this, if you dont recognise the laws then will you fight fair?
or will the US develop more potent anthrax type weapons?
