For a scientific explanation as to how they form I would suggest that water condensate from the air blankets the cold , calm , salty water and begins to converge, forming 3D crystals, where it may not be possible with salt water on it's own. Just a hunch, but it might be much more complex than that. Very cool and thanks for the post.

I see these all the time.

They magically appear in my Freezer. I'm sure the two are directly related.

Under what conditions do these form and is this a special event or does it happen every year?

This is the most amazing thing, how do these things come about? and why do they appear? on the surface of water? there is a similar thing in Alaska where you can see very small flowers of different colors growing on some rocks. Like, how do they get the proper nutrition? and now this. May be these two things have similar explanation?
