Sooo where is the vid then?

All we get is a single frame of the 'object' blowing up...

...they (CBS) got a second opinion from a Vatican expert... oh kay..
...

CBS's edited version of the video is the only one I've been able to find so far. It's in the original CBS news article here:

SOURCE: CBS

They credit YouTube as a source of the video, but with no link that I could find and a search didn't turn up anything.

I agree it's pretty weird CBS went to a "Vatican expert" for a second opinion.

Okay, how about process of elimination? I assume between this guy, CBS News and the Space Expert they contacted...someone would have checked known satellite tracks for that time and sky area. The fact it made it to air on a major network news broadcast tells me they ruled out such an obvious thing or the story would had headlined about WHICH satellite the guy watched destroyed somehow. So whats left that wouldn't be on a public Satellite tracker?

North Korea's little tumbling mystery, I'd imagine.

All sorts of "Black" satellites for the intelligence programs of a few nations. I suppose we could have watched one destroyed by someone for some reason....or the other possibility that doesn't give a warm fuzzy feeling here.

....Anyone have any idea where the X-37 is at the moment?

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The military's mysterious mini-shuttle launched today on a classified mission that has captured the imaginations of everyone from amateur satellite trackers to anti-nuclear protestors and potential military adversaries Russia and China.

Built by Boeing's secretive Phantom Works in Huntington Beach, Calif., the Air Force X-37B spacecraft is rumored to be everything from a space bomber to a satellite-killer or a test-bed for advanced spy satellite sensors.

We still HAVE an X-37...right?

Theres a vid?...

Whoops, didnt have enough of my NoScript permissions on (damn sites with layer after layer of scripting sheesh). My bad
apologies to Mr Prychodzko.

Hmm still think its something mundane, gotta see the entire vid personally especially the blowing up part to really know.

The little orbiting object could easily be a small reflection of the object itself, after all the guys filming it by placing a iphone to the eyepiece of a telescope, and we dont know how he's tracking the object so little wobbles could shift the light angle enough to alter a reflections position like that... pure guess work on my part but thats how I see it.

I am so shocked I haven't seen someone post the "Ancient Aliens" guy with the big hair on here by now.

Because... that's actually probably what it was. lol. Seriously.

The news story says, "It was shot on Dec. 20 around 5 p.m. in Sacramento..." It's too bad we don't have more details like the direction.

I also thought the possibility of a satellite being taken out seems like a possible explanation. Anyone missing a satellite?

Well, someone's got some explaining to do. If the government has the technology to zip around satellites and take them out, then we're all left behind about 100 years. If the former is incorrect, then someone has some explaining to do..

We've had fireworks since before Christmas ... so the fireworks idea lead me on to Planet Explosion CGI ideas which prompted the little Phaeton critter in the back of my head to dig up a new explanation that didn't include my methane idea and I got this 2000 Hypothesis ...

and now I read the suggestions in the thread and I vote for blowing up Korea's satellite. Wishful thinking, oh well.

Stumped as to what it really is though, the first vid, I thought the sun, with reflections on the lens.....the second video?? Hmmm.....

They show it's still up there and I think you can go back in history of tracking the OTV-3 as they call it.

Launch date: December 11, 2012 Source: United States (US) Comments: This is the third OTV (Orbital Test Vehicle) mission. The OTV 3 (X-37B) is a robotic spaceplane developed by the US Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office and carries secret test payloads. The satellite is probably in a roughly 400 km circular orbit at an inclination between 35 and 45 deg.

I think we need to find out what exactly he was looking at with the telescope in the first place. Someone here could pin it down more if we had precise coordinates to work with.

I would tend to think that it's a satellite but I rather doubt that a smaller object would descend into "orbit" around it. Something that size (orbiting another satellite) would be so small that you would not see it on an amateur telescope, I'm guessing.

I wouldn't think that we would "blow up" a satellite and leave a huge debris field of micro meteorites in orbit. If we did something like that, it would make more sense to vaporizes the object. You would basically be blocking a whole orbit path with that kind of debris field.

Ha! Good one!

On a serious note, it very well might be our own secret manned space program run by the Navy. SG:1 makes it look like the Air Force would be in charge...nope, it's the Dept. of the Navy that has ships up there.

It happened at 5pm-ish on the 20th? Then it was already 12/21/2012 in New Zeland!

Ive seen what appear to be a satalite do a complete 90-degree right angle turn on a DIME. Moving at orbital speeds, that is some amazing technology to make a dramatic course correction like that.

I have no doubt we have more than a crappy space station up there

Hasn't been the first time a satellite has exploded.

It's kind of old,but it gives you the aspects of what occurs.

EXPLOSIONS IN SPACE Satellites launched into space have been known to explode as a result of accidental or intentional means. The first such breakup occurred in June 1961. Since then around 200 explosions have occurred. Reason: propulsion failures, anti-satellite targeting, collisions, failures of attiutude control systems, overpressure of residual propellant, battery failures, and other sources. I have made observations of interest of two types of exploding vehicle classes.

It sure is strange. Not the bright object, as it's impossible to identify and could be anything, but after the "explosion" when it looks more like it was broken in pieces than exploded. Too bad we don't have a continuous video.

Therefore, at this stage, it is not unreasonable to classify both the large bright object and the little white moving one as Unidentified Flying Object(s).

Until such time as verified otherwise.

Quite the mystery.

It will be interesting to see if there is an announcement from any country or agency of a lost satellite in Earth's orbit, given the footage was from 20th December - I certainly have not heard anything yet.

Bah, so here we finally have a space alien craft into Earth's atmosphere and the morons decide to blow it up. Why am I not surprised?

Shoot first, ask questions later.

The thing flying around it was obviously a heat seeking missile.

Like Duh...

Now will never make contact... Nimrods.

I was hoping to put my sister on the first flight.

Maybe there's a cold war on earth but a hot war in space?
If war were to break out between any superpowers it just might start "up there".
Ok, that's my final doom porn comment for 2012.
Nothing like going out with a bang.
