Why are Flags, Stars and ATS points so important to some members?

It being an aspect of the site. And a reward system for quality posts and threads. It makes sense that someone who pumps out quality and gets little would be upset that someone with a sh-ton of stars gets a sh-ton of stars for b/s.

I'll star a well thought out reply or something I agree with, well thought out or not. I've yet to flag anything. I don't have a clue what the points are, but I was once notified that I had been docked a thousand of them for being a big jerk. I don't recall being overly concerned by the loss...

Interesting idea! You could set up a bidding system. "I'll give you ten stars, Nixie, if you'll mark me as a friend." If you're popular, people will give you more stars to be friends, so you could measure your 'worth" in that manner. The possibilities are endless!
