I think you'll find that the percentage of land bought by China pales in comparison to the the land bought by British and the US.

You've been sucked in by media lies methinks.

Mate every Aussie company worth a pinch of sh*t has been bought up by overseas investors, Thats what Dick Smith was on about 10 years ago.
But the lure of big dollars to Aussie business owners has always been too much to ignore.
Thats probably changed a bit recently with our healthy dollar and their ailing one.
The Damage is already done, as Keating warned we could become a banana republic and now its Asian magnates
buying us out.
All the Piss-taking aside, Australias future will rely heavily on other countries, in particular Asian nations.
Our population is too small which is why we have the influx from the sub continent.

Heh I wouldn't go as far as saying Australia was the next world power... your average aussie can see plain as day that America is now using Australia as a "foot in the door" into the asia-pacific countries, unfortunately our governemnt are either ignorant of this, or like most politicans they are only concerned with their immediate short-term success and don't care about the long-term re-percussions of letting the US use us as a stepping stone.

As for that quote about "Thailand is the oldest friend of America in Asia"...my wife's Thai, I asked her what her thoughts were and she just scoffed. Thai look at America in a similar light to alot of aussies, and it's not a particularly bright one :/

Umm should try saying that to the majority of the countries around the region, I can think of some off the top of my head that might have some issues with your statement.

North & South Korea. Pressure cooker ready to explode
The whole Island conflict that's heating up between China and Japan.
The South China sea claims, China vs the rest of the region.

So I don't think everyone is friendly neighbors as you might think.

You're certainly right about that hence the word "CONTROLLED"

Please refer to this map about US installations in Australia.

I'm not saying you're completely wrong, Australia has done alright and needs to take a stand in the region or the big red dragon will take all it desires with no Yang to it's Ying..

I would just like to say that I welcome our new Australian masters and I hope you send more of your amazing pop stars with great bums to entertain us

I have never met an Aussie I didn't like, you drink the same as us Northern Englanders, love a fart joke and know how to have a good time.
Heck my first best man was from Tasmania and he was sick on my 1st wifes wedding dress (Oh how we laughed
well myself and my best man did).
So good for you Aussies, hope everything goes okay for you all.

Australia can never be a super power until it learns to be independent. Like it or not, the British Queen still rules over Australia. And if she didn't, Australia would probably be under Chinese control.

This simple rule of thumb falls quite flat given the number of things apparently americans don't know about that are in fact important enough to know...

I think people need to understand that the Queen does not rule over anybody, she is the figure head of the commonwealth (If it was up to me the UK would leave the EU and concentrate on the commonwealth).
She can not order anything at all, she has no real power and is in fact a slave to her people.
Like it or not the commonwealth countries have a long history together and we can not change that, we should embrace the fact we have so much history and seeing 2.1 billion people are living in commonwealth countries we could have a massive part to play on the world stage.

Think about it the commonwealth means for the good of everyone, yeah it is a little socialist but we wouldn't invite America anyhow

Yes, yes. The Queen has no power and is a figurehead (even though she holds God hows much land and dissolves parliaments on a whim). I'm curious, with a disarmed population, if the Queen or future Kings decided they wanted their power back, who would stop them? I find it so amazing that so much trust is given to an inbred royal family known historically for their barbaric acts of murder and genocide... and that so many are brainwashed into actually believing that this woman wields absolutely no power.

The devil's greatest trick was telling people he didn't exist.

"The commonwealth have a long history together" yea, like throwing your prisoners on a boat and dumping them in Australia. Oh but America isn't welcome? Shucks, I had all this tea just ready to gift but I guess it will just have to go in the river.

You obviously don't know much about history or even Australia.

You should provide us all with a few giggles during this conversation with your vast knowledge. I can't wait to see your replies.

hahaha given your literacy rate and how stupid Americans are when it comes to general knowledge i'm not surprised you dont know anything about any other country. I bet you could tell me who is winning on dancing with the stars thought lmao. Go eat some more calorie packed junk food and watch the super bowl while better educated and harder working immigrants FROM ASIA take all your jobs and wonder how you let it all slip past you while your partied the night away.

You guys are like frogs in a pot and the water is almost at boiling point. They turned the heat up so slowly and fed you such delicious goodies you didnt even realize you were getting screwed.

What goes around come around mate, reap the harvest you have sowed and enjoy. Australia would destroy America pound for pound. Dont you ladies wear padding and protection to play grid iron?? try playing rugby with no padding on lol. Americans dont know the meaning of the word hard. All just a bunch of posers.

Tell me exactly how the Queen would take back all her power?
The Queen's role in Parliament is:
Assenting to Bills passed by Parliament, on the advice of Ministers;
Giving audiences to Ministers, at which Her Majesty may be consulted, encourage and warn;
Opening each new session of Parliament;
Proroguing or dissolving Parliament before a general election.
She has never gone against parliament and only dissolves parliament when asked to do so by the countries prime ministers etc.
I know we are on ATS but sometimes things are just how they look.

Yes ww2, the war in Europe that did not concern us what so ever but we helped out anyway. Iraq was war torn 20 god damn years after the first time we pulped them. And apparently the whole god damn world I don't see anyone stepping up to stop us so yeah that kind of speaks for itself now doesn't it

I don't really want to enter into the my dad's bigger than yours debate or bashing Americans but just to remind you that there was a bit of concern after the Japs sunk half your Navy in Pearl Harbour.

Also if it wasn't for that European war the USA wouldn't have risen unchallenged to the economic position whereby it could have taken action against Iraq in 1990 - which by the way, left Iraq mostly untouched as it was focussed on the "liberation" of Kuwait.

Yeah our dollar looks strong against theirs, but theres is worth jacksh*t so what does that really mean.
Who really cares whos guns are the biggest anyway, the waste of human life by Americans against their enemies and their own young is disgusting, nothing to be proud of brothers.
In a real pissing contest, Australian courage and fortitude against US conceit and bravado any day of the week.
Quality not quantity.

How many of those 312million are in the armed services?

And of those in the Millitary, howw many would make up an invasion force?

And how many of the 23million would muster to repel the Invading force?

How would you keep supply lines open over that distance?

Not to mention that if something ike that did happen (as unlikely as it is), AU has other allies and shareholders that wouldn't stand for it and would likewise retaliate in one way or another.

AU isn't a backward 3rd world country and our tech is just as advanced, our troops are just as well trained (if not better)... You'd go home with a bloody nose, just like in Nam...!!

Dose'nt matter what a countries population is compaired to another, it's about logistics and demographics and the ability to maintain a foothold.

You nor I can change what happened in the past so we have to work with what we have now, I know for sure that many countries wouldn't even exist today if we didn't have the British empire etc but many of those countries didn't do so bad with us and decided to still have ties with the UK with the commonwealth.
I wouldn't want the US in the commonwealth because frankly I do not agree with many Americans views on the world (I have a American son...Oh the shame :lol
.
Young country syndrome....that passed the Aussies by because we helped them along the way (Plus they can drink at dinnertime without being called an alcoholic) but you USAers wanted to make the same mistakes we made.

I don't see why America has to ''weasel'' its way into something it is in control of.There is a deliberate power shift from West to East and the American elite are behind it.

I always liked the "barbaric acts of genocide" line, as I've always been a believer in you have to accept your past good and bad.
Though it is true that one of my ancestors was a criminal, one was a free settler and one was indigenous, one was a bush ranger, but all that aside the British armed forces in its day were the armed forces of a super power, and they did commit atrocities everywhere, in fact it was a major way of maintaining control, they would just slaughter a few hundred here and a thousand or so there. they did it to the Scots the Irish,Indians, aboriginals, Maori. but they didn't do it to you America, why?
sure you had a revolution and it was all very poetic, and they shot a large amount of people at a meeting. but where was the brutality the Brits were famous for, not in America that for sure. do you think the colonial British would have let you stroll into town and ransack their ships,
do some research, they whipped men till the spine and rib cage was visible for stealing food, they practiced "keel hauling" they liked to dismember people on public display when they were hung drawn and quartered.
but with America, they just walked away basically and left you, no crazy massacres, no crazy atrocities. all sounds a bit funny to me, you sure your founding fathers didn't cut a deal to make it all go away, you know Washington did make that wonder out into the night and have that "vision" with "God" .
I know it would be hard to accept and all.

Ok then sure Australia and its whole population of 3 people is amazingly powerful and is going to take the world by storm.

Fortress Australia was sh**ing they"re pants. When Japan occupied the Solomon's.Do you remember who came to the rescue?

well with one third of the worlds uranium in our backyard which we are now selling to our friends in India, we are quite capable of becoming a nuclear armed and powered country, we just need the right people in charge.
it was supposed to happen in the 50's-60's but America and Briton freaked out and shut us down.
Put Australia back 100 years.
