Oh yeah, I don't look at USGS much any more so haven't seen those plots for a long while.
So quite a shallow dive there, compared to the others like the Tonga zone which is supposedly 45 degrees to 600km (there is probably a technical term for that "dive' but my mind has gone blank)

Wadati–Benioff zone.

I'm so excited!
I was wilfing around on the site for our closest seismo,
at a college about 35 miles away, to see what the 8.3 looked like there.
Here it is here in PA:

rev.seis.sc.edu...

I found a bunch of stuff I didn't notice before!

This map shows the present large eqs, & significant past ones.
If you hover on a ring, it gives date, time & magnitude.
Click on it & you get the seismos from the event, location, depth...

rev.seis.sc.edu...

Click on the one in Calif, (they say 5.9), & it also gives past significant ones for that area!
And best of all, I can get my polar views with latitude & longitude grids!!!!!!!
Pfffttt!!! Take that USGS!!! You are rapidly being replaced!!!!

Maybe everyone has a link like this already.
But I'm such a noob I didn't!
I feel like Santa was here!!!

Not much Ocean to travel through, so maybe more vibes.
I recall the 7.9 in May 2006 in Tonga, was 2,400km from me but we felt the wobble, and vertigo if you like to call it that, no shaking or noise but it felt like the Planet had taken a hit. Can relate it to the Moscovites reports.

Good for you.
For the ones who just like Lists, this one gives 4.0+ Worldwide
www.iris.washington.edu...
there are a few missing though, like
2013-05-25 02:26:14, Mag 4.9, 49.51°N, 156.21°E, 63, Kuril Islands [gfz]

which was between Fiji and Macquarie timewise

That IRIS kind of matches LDEO's list

the best method is to shop around though

speaking of LDEO, they seem to be stuck on N.Cali 5.8, still haven't listed the 8.3 yet

This USGS (Useless) change has really mucked everyone up, including Live Earthquake Mashup
The Live Earthquake Mashup is currently out of order. I hope I can fix it next weekend. Please come back in a few days. As a quick workaround, you can load the feeds directly in Google Maps, alas without the Timeline and the additional information:

his feed from EMSC still works OK on the alternative Google Maps temp solution, with the details in the popups, but not for USGS. Must be trying to get at the newly formatted source data.

I should sell him some coloured icons

Hi WOQ. I knew of rev.seis but I am sure it was not a comprehensive as that so thanks for mentioning it again. I think it is good enough to be listed as a world wide earthquake source.

Have you seen this site: EarthquakeTrack.com ? You might like that one as well.

BTW: Can't remember who was moaning about not having a north pole view but rev.seis has that.

I should sell him my JSON reader. I knew they would dump the old data despite the fact that they assured me they would not. I am glad I switch over when I did.

BTW Muzzy that map of the Aleutian subduction you will not find on USGS - I don't go there either. I created that from ANSS data myself.

I was sitting in the kitchen and an empty milk package fell over. the scissors which are hanging on the wall were moving and the coffee was moving.

My parents said I am crazy, but now I found the reason. so apparently the quake was at 9:44 and I saw all the things at arround 10 + - 10 minutes... so should be possible with the wave travelling.

I am confused. The quake was at 05:44 UTC. As far as I am aware Germany is 2 hrs ahead in summer so that makes it 07:44 AM in Germany. Kamchatka, the peninsula, is I think on the ANAT time zone which is, like New Zealand UTC +12, but the sea around there is UTC +10 which is what USGS reported. Local reports from the land should be +12.

dreamfox reported the quake as 22:44

8.2
Sea of Okhotsk
2013-05-23 22:44:48-07:00619.0 km deep

That however was US west coast time if that is the case (not a useful time to post BTW. I venture to suggest that posts here should always be in UTC) which is maybe where the confusion arises?

Basically if you felt the world wobble at 09:44 in Germany, which would be 07:44 UTC, then it was not because of the Russian quake IMHO. Maybe your parents were right?

Maybe the ground was shaking as Angela Merkel's trucks rolled past bring in the Euros/Gold/Booty from the other EU countries, or perhaps she was stamping her foot at Germany losing the Eurovision song contest?

Just found a little update for you from a volcanologist re those California quakes

Earthquake Swarm Near Greenville in California

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the current Greenville, California earthquake swarm. This is likely due to the fact that the swarm is in the vicinity of the Lassen Volcanic Center, which is ~50 km to the northwest of these earthquakes. Now, I don’t like to delve too much into earthquakes that aren’t volcanically-related here, but I thought I’d share some information on the earthquakes just to help with some of these questions.

First, these earthquakes have nothing to do with the Lassen Volcanic Center (LVC). They are centered much too far away to have any connection.............................................

Magnitude 8.3 Sea of Okhotsk.mp3

It is zipped as we are not allowed to link to files that start playing immediately. T & C and all that.

WHOA, that's more eerie than the Tohoku recording It's like someone is rhythmically & slowly banging on a kettle drum. Thanks for digging it up, I'm going to leave it on repeat for a while
