I'm seeing a bit of small swarm :

Since all the quakes are in a 2 mile x 2 mile cube (aprox) when I measured it via Google Earth, it's odd.

I'll see if I can find the quake list and tag it in here too.

Edit to come with listing.

I'm not happy with the currently USGS list as it doesn't list all the quakes that show up on Google Earth KML.

There sure seem to be a lot of midsize quakes around the ring of fire this week, especially near Asia and New Zealand/Australia. I'm not used to the new earthquake map, it may just be that.

5.9 er in Northern California. Looks a bit inland

We don't often get 5's or better here in the inland areas of CA.

Haven't felt anything like that since the Loma Prieta quake in '89.

No reports of damage, yet.

Got to love those earthquake-resistant building codes.

I was in Santa Cruz during the loam prieta. That was a bad one. Greenville is unusual. Last eastern one this big in 60's. just now a 3.5. Same place? Ill look

Yea both in same spot. Lots of old volcanoes in eastern Cali but not sure of their specifics. This isn't on the fault yet both are 0 km deep. That doesn't sound right for some reason.

Forgive me, it's not on the San Andreas fault (what I meant to say). It's a pretty inactive fault (Clayton creek something or another). It's definitely shallow unless they haven't gotten its depth yet. Another 3.4 just now. Aftershocks I'm sure. Ill see if my sister felt it as she lives less than 100 miles from there.

These quakes occurred near Lake Almanor which is near Lassen National Volcanic Park & Lassen Peak.

So in alturas she is reporting she still feels like she's moving and states it was felt all the way in Sacramento. Evidently she's talking to someone there.

Reports it was also felt in Sonora by another relative. Hopefully it let off some pressure and its all over now.

Wow, those are darned shallow.
I'm gonna have to pull up Google Earth and look at the terrain, to see if there is any obvious volcanic remnants around there..

ETA

Nearest volcano looks to be about 40-50 miles away.
The geological / hydrological concern I might have, is that there is Canyon Dam, about 2 miles from the quakes.
Let's hope it is inspected soonish.

M.

So do you or anyone know about this chain of ancient volcanoes around here. We have the long valley caldera further south but there are tons of volcanoes up north (mammoth mountain, lake almanor as someone pointed out, the ones near lakeview oregon, etc. I was there about 3 weeks ago and there was a swarm through lakeview oregon (southern part near Cali border).

The quakes are near the town of Canyondam, CA at the bottom of Lake Almanor near the dam that forms the lake. Hope the dam holds scary stuff.

Yes, there is always that chance there is a mag 7 around the corner.

So what are you doing in preparation?

Get to it, check your emergency supplies now.
You will need minimum 3 days worth to fend for yourself.

Might as well do it now, good a time as any.
We usually dump and replenish our semi-perishables and water cans every time there is a Mag 7 within 2000km, so with todays 7.4 near Tonga/Fiji will be checking the dates on our boxes at least and replenish the water for sure.
