SYDNEY (AP) — A powerful earthquake off the Solomon Islands generated a tsunami of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) that damaged dozens of homes in the South Pacific island chain Wednesday, but authorities canceled warnings for tsunamis on more distant coasts.

Solomons officials reported two 1.5-meter (4 foot, 11-inch) waves hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island, damaging around 50 homes and properties, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. There were no reports of injuries or deaths. Villagers were heading for higher ground as a precaution, Herming said.

As of the time of this reply I count 27 quakes and aftershocks. Four are 6.0 and above and only one, a 4.9, is below 5,0. This is some of the strongest activity I have seen since Fukushima if I am not mistaken. They are really getting slammed hard.

Just watched the start of the TV News at 6, they were Live at the beach in Auckland and asking people if they knew there was a Tsunami Watch in effect, no one knew.

9 years since Banda Aceh/Indian Ocean Tsunami and we still don't have sirens at our populated coastal regions.
When I heard it on the car radio it was breaking news, and that was 2 hours after the earthquake.
Normally the MSM is right onto it (earthquakes) here especially since Christchurch.

there is a heck of a lot of work to do yet and its global.
disgraceful

Four elderly people and one child died after the wave hit the Santa Cruz Islands, an eastern region of the Solomon Islands, said Augustine Bilve, a director at a hospital in Lata, the main town in the area.

Thats interesting USGS have 20 more quakes than Geofon, are they making them up now?

who knows eh, I've kept to GFZ_Geofon because that is where I started, they were right onto it when the first 6's broke out, while USGS pontificated.

I just did an interactive map of the fore and after shocks, marked with seperate icons, but mucked up the columns on the csv file, so the icons did'nt match the magnitude when I mapped it, late here now, will try again in the morning.
At least I can see that 4 of the 21 aftershocks were on the east side of Nendo Island, the rest to the NW, W and SW.

Christchurch
Even if I will tell you the truth unfortunatelly we do not have the power to change anything but Christchurch will be wiped out from Earth by an (the) Earthquake (and) 'or' Evil's power.

When?

Hard to say.

To move an entire city it's almost impossible but possible.

I still go for an 8+ one down at the Solomons within the next 2 weeks

Please do not make any more predictions! It seems that they come true

If they don't downgrade that one to 7.9 then that is my predictive capability out of the window! Mind I never said I could predict anyway)

One thing I would say - Despite that being a major quake in an ocean setting it is good that so few lost their lives. It could have been considerably worse.

Normally the MSM is right onto it (earthquakes) here especially since Christchurch.

there is a heck of a lot of work to do yet and its global.
disgraceful

Yeah, recognized this too and was wondering if it is globally that no MSM is somehow really reporting it. When this quake would have been in a more populated area, the MSM would be right onto it.... but in this case, not enough people injured to care about -.- sad journalism...

I only heard one short sentence mentioning this quake in the German news.

We have two predictions, one gives a vague location and a short time period, the other a specific location and time. To be honest neither of these predictions are useful, or even correct despite the congratulations being offered.

The first says "in the ring of fire". Pointless. That is such a large area that you could decide to avoid most of the holiday destinations in the world on that basis of such a woolly description. The time frame is OK.

The second pinpoints a locations and a specific time. Pointless. If I decide to prepare for the quake in Santa Cruz a week before the event then I am caught because the time is wrong and I have not started my preparations.

Even I said that IF 'x' then 'y' in the Solomans so was I right? No. Way too loose a description of possibilities.

IF someone is going to be considered viable as a predictor of earthquakes then in my humble opinion certain criteria need to be met as far as I am concerned. These are:

1. Reasonable accuracy of location. By this I mean for example "the Santa Cruz Islands Area", not "The Ring of Fire".

2. A realistic time frame. By this I mean not attempting to pinpoint a date, but conversely not making the time frame so long that it becomes pointless. Tomorrow at 13:45 is just as bad as sometime in the next 3 years. Periods of less that a year are possibly of use, but preferably they should be less than 3 months.

3. A reasonably accurate estimate of magnitude. Between mag 5 and 8 as we often see is not a prediction it is a coverall. A mag 8 is about 32,000 times stronger than a mag 5 so pointless. In my opinion a prediction is only of use if it is within a range of 0.6 to 0.8 magnitude max, so 7.2 to 8.0 at the most.

4. Consistency. Unless predictions are consistent they are little more than fortuitous chance. If predictions are based on scientific method then they should be repeatable and it should be possible to predict for all major quakes 6.5 upwards. If they are based on some other method then I doubt that they will be consistent, which does not deny the validity but reduces the usefulness.

Here is the IEPC 'prediction' most recently issued

A Catastrophic Geophysical Event (CGE) Warning Notice (CWN) has been issued on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 9:00am.
This CWN specifies a predicted major earthquake M8.0+ and associated tsunami that may strike the Philippines and northern Indonesia between now and December 2014.

Source

Is this useful? No not really. The region is fairly large considering the number of plate boundaries it encompasses. The time span is way too long. And why did they not predict the one today?

In fact given that the scientists should know more than us why was there no word from them about impending large quakes based on the series of Mag 6? In my opinion because they do not know any better than we do.
