Check out this seismo from vesuvious, just a couple hours ago!

Is this weather related, or is this a little harmonic action??

This one looks mechanical to me.

edit on 16-7-2013 by radpetey because: (no reason given)

To that I would say (1) Harmonic possibly. I would have said cultural but for the heavy signal from 00-04 which is now tailing off towards 08. Given that Italy is 2 hrs ahead of UTC then if this was cultural that would mean the heaviest between 02:00 and tailing off towards 10:00. Since I was not there it cannot be me snoring.

The weather there on the 16th was low wind - 6km/hr and although the area of the seismo looks wooded I would not have thought this enough to make this signal, but it could be. On the other hand today when the signal has died down a bit the wind is 11km/hr so...............the curious thing is that the signal is mainly above the line.....

(2) Again the regular spread outside cultural noise hours suggests not mechanical however we have no idea, as the map does not show for me anyway, where this seismo is situated. Is it in the city or the volcano?

Either way Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and is one of the 16 always erupting so the chances are high that this is volcanic associated activity.

Thank you. We, all of us on this thread, aim to impart what little knowledge we have to others for their enlightenment. I should point out to you that this year your host on the thread is actually Muzzy and not myself. We decided to take turns!

This calculates the degree distance using java|script trigonometric code by latlon of source and station,

This doesn't calculate degree, you must input as degrees from step 1.

I already have the moveable-type scripts built into my programs. The other looks interesting for a quick fix.

I will rephrase that. That last one looks extremely interesting and the first handy for the degrees input.

Didn't feel a thing

I was in Naenae in the Hutt Valley at the time, on a roof 3 stories up, concrete tilt-slab construction.
but 7649 other people did!
My beloved called right after it happened, "holy c__p man did you feel that? the house was a rockin"

Quake was on the Awatere Fault
37 aftershocks to 19/07/2013 05:05:30 UTC
mag1= 11 , mag2= 18 , mag3= 6
mag4= 1 , mag5= 1
total= 37
total energy released= 5788.954 TTNT

5 of those are outside the main group, but ARE after the 5.7
and those run on to the North Island tracking the extension of the Awatere Fault into that island, where it becomes the Wellington fault.

well no I didn't.
lately I have been doing the NZ daily maps approx every 3-5-7 days, so I hadn't noticed the little cluster of smaller quakes in Clifford Bay during that period. July maps
Still its the tourniquet point where the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate reverse subduction direction, so we do expect to get quite a few quakes around here. Its part of daily life.
Should have known something was due, the graph showed that telltale drop of energy release two days before

It looks as if there was a small-to-mid-sized quake off the Oregon coast (I think--it could be farther away) a few minutes ago. I'm still waiting for a network to list something...here is a picture from TA.K02D.BHZ:

image source

This image is from station PB031 near Hergert, OR.

Hmmm, still not showing up....I swear, if there are any precursers to be seen before the CSZ goes off, they won't be listed until after the main rupture.

ETA: Here is a snapshot from the transportable arraycovering the PNW, just to show that this wasn't a small event.

Last edit, I promise.

USGS has decided that it was a Mag 4.2 mb, 164 km off the coast of Bandon, OR.

We just had a 5.9

Certainly felt that one!
went on for quite a while, almost had to dive to catch a pile of books that were wobbling on the bookshelf, but they stayed upright. Started off gentle and just got stronger and stronger, then died away, wobbling for nearly a minute after the main S wave hit.
Not the bone shaker the 6.3 last July was, but enough to make you stop and get ready to dive for cover.

Me too. Just enough minor activity to let us know it is still there, but nothing too raucous.
