Yay! Excellent start Muzzy my friend. Yes I know - it is a place holder and needs fleshing out.

Glad you accepted the challenge of taking the thread on, and many thanks to you for your excellent contributions in the older Quake Watch threads.

I can't help but notice that seismic activity has been a little slow the past couple of days... Is she warming up for the big one? Or is this just the end of the recent quake swarm? Like, other than the 5.1 in Pakistan a few hours ago, there really hasn't been much activity...

Just curious..

Good luck this year guys and gals! I come to the site often, and I have to say I spend a good part of my time checking on the eq situation. Have a merry merry Christmas and an even better new years!

Cheers!

It seems to be running at around 3 or 4 Mag 5+ quakes a day which is about average currently, the whole of this year being quieter than normal anyway.

So in answer to your question - who knows!
I personally think not but tomorrow is the 8th Anniversary of the Band Aceh quake and tsunami, and no one saw that one coming.

thank you westcoast. i appreciate it .. and as we all know quakes and volcanoes always go hand in hand . its like a fine marriage .. its a beautiful thing really.. .. and i aim to be a better poster in both threads in the coming year.. as this year and last has been rather bumpy for me ..

Yep,you have missed the boat.

Quake Watch 2012

It's the earthquake threads and updates.
These guys and gals do more then the USGS and the rest of those government agency's put in place to watch geological events.
Period.

I look forward to learning more about how our natural world responds and reacts. Thank you, PM, for all that you have done and thank you, muzzy, for all that you will be doing for this ongoing thread.

With that, I have a question...

I know that I live next to a subduction zone. But, that is only the east side of the troublesome plate. I'd like to learn more about the west side of the juan de fuca. Does anyone have links to share about how the plate behaves on the west side?

There is a reasonable if brief explanation on Wikipedia of the spreading ridges associated with the Juan de Fuca plate which you can read here

Armed with the names of the ridges, Explorer. Gorda, JDF, you should be able to wilf off to further detail from the links in Wiki and elsewhere.

Indeed. I never really cared about quakes, other than when MSM says I should care... The 2012 quake watch thread really opened my eyes.. Not to the fact that quakes happen, but to just how common they are and how they seem to be connected to each other. I may be reading into the data too far, but it's been enlightening all the same. These guys provide great analysis of the events.

I'd give more thumbs up for the thread, but that might come across as spam!!

Keep it up, quake watch is by far the best on-going thread on the boards!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Muzzy for creating this thread, you know the quake watchers need their own space to monitor the shaking and baking of this planet we call home. We quake watch lurkers are addicted to it!

Thanks also to the many regular contributors who have taught the members of ATS so much about seismology and how to read graphs and so on. xoxox

Here is a toast to an exciting but low casualty earthquake year and many more!!!!!!!!!!

more links that wouldn't fit in the OP

Others (combined map and list types)
USGS
EMSC
GREECE last24hrs
CANADA
MEXICO last 10 days
AUSTRALIA
THAILAND/BURMA
VANUATU
NORSAR Scandanavia, last week
TURKEY last 24hrs.7days, 30 days or year
SWITZERLAND translated to English
MONGOLIA
ICELAND
SPAIN
AZERBAIJAN

There are a few other earthquake live map sites like RSOE, but they all take feeds from the main networks anyway.

Some other earthquake stuff;
Earthquake Report is a good site for information, but is not an event source. They do a good reporting job however.
PuterMan's Quake Watch blog for Mag 6+ USGS earthquake data with phase and tensor information.

Helicorders and seismograms
Live Internet Seismic Server page
Global seismograph index

Don't forget there is also a dedicated Volcano Watch 2013 which often has (volcanic) earthquake posts in it
