Authorities: 3 set deadly Ind. blast for insurance

Three people charged in a gas explosion that devastated an Indianapolis neighborhood deliberately set up the deadly blast to collect a big insurance payout, authorities said Friday.

The home's owner, Monserrate Shirley; her boyfriend, Mark Leonard; and his brother, Bob Leonard, were arrested Friday and charged with murder, arson and other counts in the Nov. 10 blast that killed two people.

Shirley, 47, was facing mounting financial woes, including $63,000 in credit card debt and worsening bankruptcy proceedings, court documents say. And a friend of Mark Leonard's told investigators Leonard said he had "lost a ton of money" — about $10,000 — at a casino some three weeks before the explosion.

Seriously, that was what I expected the entire time, Occam's Razor and all.

There is the possibility that the DA ordered their arrest simply because they look guilty (that is, they have money problems, so it must be an insurance scam). It's easier to clear the books and give "the people" some satisfaction by arresting a couple of low-lifes than to hold a large corporation responsible. It's been known to happen.

I'm not asserting that that's what happened, mind you--but that's exactly how much faith I have in the "justice system" in this country....

I think they said the payout was $300,000. That's not even a half a million.

Wasn't Shirley out town as well when this happened?

No, they found where a gas valve had been disconnected and the supply line left open to the air, on the gas fireplace.

It was obvious what had happened when they inspected the remains of the fireplace.

I think that amount was for their belongings and didn't include the value of the home.
