All that can be known is how far from the star the planet is and how massive it is. It is not possible to know if there is an atmosphere or water on these planets.

Actually, it is possible to detect an atmosphere, and even study some of its properties or changes it goes through. An exoplanet's atmosphere can be detected by studying the star's light when an exoplanet transits it. An atmosphere causes polarisation, as well as producing absorption spectral lines.

Yeah, not possible with current observatories.
But next-gen tech is coming really close to being able to study this variables on planets smaller than Gas giants.
'Tis an age of wonder indeed.
