Bush Says U.S. Safety from Terror 'Up in the Air' - staying on the offensive?

Topic started on 24-10-2004 @ 05:56 PM by edsinger

OK I just want to ask a simple question, I will not start any flaming..

We all know, but yet might not agree with Bush, that if elected the United States will stay on the offensive against this threat.

Now , the surprise.

I believe that Kerry would also stay on the offensive but to a much less degree. Early pull out from Iraq included (IMHO)

The question is if we can keep this from getting heated, please explain to me how you feel Kerry will pursue the war on terror? And how would he pursue it differently than Bush?

The story...

Bush Says U.S. Safety from Terror 'Up in the Air'
Sun Oct 24,11:04 AM ET

WACO, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said in a television interview the United States was safer from terrorism but whether it can ever be fully safe was "up in the air."

Bush also told the Fox News Channel's "Hannity and Colmes" show to be broadcast on Monday night that the U.S. government had no "actionable intelligence" pointing to a pre-election attack in the works as happened in Madrid earlier this year to disrupt the Spanish election.

"We do believe that they have -- because of what happened in Madrid -- that they do think about whether or not they can try to disrupt our elections," Bush said.

He said there was "nothing specific" pointing to a pre-election attack but rather "a kind of general intent."

In the interview, taped on Saturday and released on Sunday, Bush said U.S. security was "much better" since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"Whether or not we can be ever fully safe is up -- you know, is up in the air. I would hope we could make it a lot more safe by staying on the offensive," he said.

Kerry's Reply

KERRY ON BUSH 'UP IN THE AIR'
Sun Oct 24 2004 18:50:54 ET

Boca Raton, FL - Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry issued the following statement today in response to the president's comment that it is "up in the air" if we will ever be fully safe:

"First, George W. Bush said we couldn't win the war on terror. Then he said we could. Now, in a new interview, in another moment of candor, George Bush said 'Whether or not we can be... fully safe ... is up in the air.'

"George W. Bush doubts whether he can make America safe. Well, I give you this pledge: As president, we will find, capture and kill the terrorists. It's not 'up in the air.' We will win the war on terror, and we will make America safer."

Sad as it is, I think he is being honest. We will be hit and the only surefire way to stop it, is to stop pretty much all freedoms and declare martial law. The American populace will not stand for it.

This is sad...

I would say that Kerry would work more with making Iraq a group effort to relieve some of the cost. Also he has mentioned several times that he wants to focuse more attention on protecting our boarder directly, increesing checks on shipping materials that are not being checked nad the like. Also he has mentiond that he will put more attention on protecting the ammo dumps and access to nuclear sites rather than protecting just the oil fields. Kerry mentioned the Russian nuclear access to old equipment, and the Iraq Ammo dumps nto being protected allong with the boarders.. I wasent sure about the accuracy of those statements so I looked arround and he was right. Which is creapy...

We all know that the "war on Terror" is nto going to end with a single conflict and I don't believe it will ever end becasue of the nature of mankind. But at least Kerry is saying that he is willing to try and cut Terrorist access to nuclear equipment which is a HELL of alot better than what Bush is claiming he will do and more importantly more than he has shown he is willing to do.
