The cataclysmic pole shift hypothesis suggests that there have been geologically rapid shifts in the relative positions of the modern-day geographic locations of the poles and the axis of rotation of the Earth, creating calamities such as floods and tectonic events.[1]
There is evidence of precession and changes in axial tilt, but this change is on much longer time-scales and does not involve relative motion of the spin axis with respect to the planet. However, in what is known as true polar wander, the solid Earth can rotate with respect to a fixed spin axis. Research shows that during the last 200,000,000 years a total true polar wander of some 30° has occurred, but that no super-rapid shifts in the Earth's pole were found during this period.[2] A characteristic rate of true polar wander is 1° per million years or less.[3] Between approximately 790 and 810 million years ago, when the supercontinent Rodinia existed, two geologically-rapid phases of true polar wander may have occurred. In each of these, the magnetic poles of the Earth shifted by ~155°.[4]

if 21/12/2012 means a polar shift is going to happen i was just wondeing, can a polar shift occur just in only a day? shouldn't we be seeing and feeling some of effects that are associated with such a major event?

21/12/2012 doesn't mean anything in itself. You will however get that date if you want to find out when one of the iterations on whatever level of.."discs".. is completed in the Mayan calendar.

Why are you reasoning that there could be a polar shift occuring then?

possible and that will inevitably occur major disasters when the earth stopped, and rotating in the opposite direction .. will be terrible earthquake and tsunami .. of course

i hope that not going to happen

i heard about it in one of the coast to coast am broadcasts. just wondering if it could happen. honestly i would like something to happen, maybe not that drastic though.

Where is the unfathomably large amount of energy going to come from to stop the ENTIRE MASS OF THE PLANET rotating.............and then..........where is the equally unfathomably large amount if energy to start it spinning in the other direction going to come from? Pretty sure not even a fictional planet called nibiru hitting us at a perfect 45 degrees would be able to do that....

So, no, not going to happen

Here's some food for thought - Scientific evidence for Pole Shift likelihood!

Yea, and? Its a scientific fact that the MAGNETIC poles reverse reasonably regurlarly. What the cool-aiders spout as pole shift, the crustal displacement variety, its absolutely different and has zero evidence to support the faulty scientific claims made.

A magnet reversal is of little consequence. Yes there will be issues but these mostly are inthe areas of electronic navigation.

I think a weakened shield could lead to disaster when our society seems so dependent on technology. And nobody even knows for sure, there could be periods where earth is left completely defenseless during a strong solar wind/cme.
