Another day, another dozen or so deaths by gunshot. Some of these were crimes and some of these were accidents. The point is these all happened in just the last 24-36 hours. Yes, the US is a big place, so statistically you figure there will be some on an ongoing basis, but I say the rate is too high. And flooding the country with even more weapons so that just about everybody is armed is not going to help things. Anyway, here is a listing of these shootings, along with the links. The link description is from the headline, and each is a standard news story article; didn't think it was worth quoting text from each of these articles; the point is that all these gun deaths happened in about one day (perhaps there were even more, no one is claiming that this is an exhaustive/comprehensive list of them for this period).

Cops: Man fatally shoots himself while showing off new gun's safety

3 Dead in Grand Rapids Shooting

Kansas Police Officers Fatally Shot

Oklahoma 3-year-old dies in accidental shooting, authorities say

the above three-year-old shot himself by accident:

The boy, whose name and hometown have not been released, was visiting the home of a relative about four miles southeast of Guthrie when he found the loaded handgun in a bedroom.

Roy man shoots wife, keeps police in stand-off for 2 hours

San Antonio Movie Theater Shooting: Gunman Shoots 1 In Theater Parking Lot

Woman shot at Bradley campground

Woman found shot to death in Grand Rapids apartment; young son 'thought she was sleeping'

For the record, I really don't believe these were all programmed killings spawned by the alphabet agencies either.

Folks, something needs to be done, and it clearly involves taking the guns out of the hands of a lot of individuals.

yes another day has come and gone and hundreds of thousands of people have died and been born on a planet full of life and death. we should really consider banning life i mean if bad things are going to happen we should eliminate any chance of people ever being hurt by eliminating life all together, who's with me???????

if you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make a change. such wise words from a song writer.

Well OP you asked the question, what is your answer? How do you propose to take away 300 million firearms in the United States?

What a lame argument involving false equivalences. You're equating deaths by natural causes, natural disasters and wars with deaths by gunshot that were committed by accident or in a crime? Nice argument, gun lover.

Try coming up with a fourth as many gun deaths in Britain, for example, on a typical day. Only that would prove that a proliferation of guns and lax gun laws doesn't contribute to additional gun-related deaths.

Yeah, why should we care that three-year-old kids can get a hold of their stupid parents' or relatives' guns and shoot themselves. It's just the price we have to pay in order to be sure that citizens can stop the government if it ever gets out of hand... And clearly this kid was safer with guns in the house.

So there are only one fourth as many gun deaths in Britain, big deal. What is the comparative percentage of deaths by knife, blunt objects, etc.? People are still going to kill people, they just find other ways to do it. As far as children finding their parent's guns and shooting themselves? If these people had no guns they would probably leave something else laying around that a kid could kill themselves with like medications, cleaning products, insect poisons- these are careless people.

In 2011, the leading cause of death was heart disease, claiming 600,000 victims.

Cancer ranked second with almost as many.

Thats 1.2 million dead between just 2 of the leading causes of death.

Murders committed with guns: 11,493.

Yes something must be done and it sure as heck doesnt start with touching my gun rights.

How many died to DUI related deaths? Same thing, intentionally driving while impaired is the exact same as playing with a loaded gun, except your target isn't usually somebody you want dead, its the single mom driving the kids home from school, or the teenager on their 16th birthday, or so on and so forth.

So sick of this gun control or banning gun crap that pops up every time something happens.

Thats 14 people in isloated incidents, not a bad day for a population of 300 million. If someone wants to kill someone theyll cut the rope that drops a piano on em'. Murder has NOTHING to do with guns or that school shooting. That school shooting is to get YOU to talk about THIS. The ideology that guns are useful will be gone long before the guns are, if either one ever disappears.

I didn't say take away guns from everybody, rather that they need to be taken away from a lot of people -- such as those who leave their guns sitting around so a 3-year-old can get a hold of it. Clearly a dipstick who kills himself demonstrating how the safety on his gun works also shouldn't have a gun; in his case, however, he took care of the problem himself. How should the country implement some kind of disarmament and better control and regulation plan for the country, I don't know. My point is that this is such a big problem that something does need to be done besides leaving it at the status quo.

As a personal anecdote, I attended a hunting fowl dinner one night and some of the hunters were giving their stories; it sounded like they all had been hit by bird shot or knew one or more hunting biddies that have been hit. There was the case of intoxicated Dick Cheney shooting a hunting buddy in the face with bird shot too. Clearly a lot of Americans cannot handle their weapons safely.

I'll just add in this post a reply to another commenter regarding the difference in murder rates between the US and the UK:

In the US – population 311.5 million (1) – there were an estimated 13,756 murders in 2009 (2), a rate of about 5.0 per 100,000 (3). Of these 9,203 were carried out with a firearm.

In the UK – population 56.1 million (4) – there were an estimated 550 murders in 2011-12 (5), a rate of about 1.4 per 100,000. Of these 39 were carried out with a firearm (6).

The footnotes are provided in the link:

US and UK murder – rate and weapon

Note that these murder rates are not by gun alone, so they include all other weapons, yet the rate (per 100,000) for the US is about four times that of the UK. Also note that although the US population is about 6 times larger than the UK's, its murder by firearm total is 236 times higher, which equates to nearly 40 times more deaths by guns per capita in the US than in the UK.

Hand guns are now banned in the UK, I believe hunting rifles are allowed. In any case look at the statistics I provided in another comment that shows the US has nearly 40 times as man murders by gun per capita as the UK.

Murder is illegal in each country, yet they occur anyway, so I guess murder laws are ineffectual too -- or so your logic would maintain.

How many drunk drivers plow into a school and kill 26 people? The US has tightened up DUI laws and pushed DUI PSA's and it has significantly reduced DUI accidents and deaths. Similar measures need to be taken with respect to gun ownership and gun crimes.

In addition, auto transportation is much more necessary for day-to-day living than firearms, so although there are of course going to be accidents and misuses of vehicles, to equate cars and guns and the deaths from each is making an argument of false equivalences.

I gave you eight news stories of death by gunshot of innocent person, which occurred in the last 24-36 hours. You gave me a list of 4 cases that goes back to Jan, 2010; nly one of them occurred within that last day or so; the next most recent case was in November. Moreover, one of these cases involved the killing of a burglar and there is no indication in the story that the intruder was armed, so it wasn't even necessarily a case of self defense, but only killing a home intruder.

Watching the Lawrence O'Donnell show on MSNBC tonight, he stated the statistic that 33 people die of gunshot wounds in the US each day. I challenge you to find 33 cases of guns protecting innocent people from death for a single day.

Nice try, but FAIL. Thanks for playing.

Yeah, a lot of 6-year-olds die of heart disease. What a ridiculous conflation of matters. Most heart disease and cancers occur in people in later life. Yeah, I know there are childhood cancers, but the vast majority of cancers occur in older people. Gun deaths result in an inordinate percentage of younger people dying, particularly when three-year-olds can get ahold of guns lying around in their houses.

But you know what, the US and many other countries having been working to prevent heart disease and to look for treatments for it and cancers. Transfats are being phased out of a lot of food products because of their strong link to heart disease. So why not take corrective actions against too many weapons and too lethal of weapons? Assualt rifles/semiautomatic rifles are not needed for self-defense, hunting or target practice. Nor are large magazines holding many rounds of ammunition.

I definitely don't believe in banning all firearms, but firepower has to be limited and ownership needs to be restricted and regulated better. 15-minute firearm background checks do not cut it. People need gun-training courses and need to be tested on their knowledge, just like in getting a license to drive.

Oh good, I was just looking at ATS and I thought to myself 'Hey myself, you know what this place really needs? More threads about guns. There don't seem to be any at all. Especially ones that recycle through the same ideas again and again and eventually devolve into name calling from both sides of the argument. There surely aren't enough of those'.

Guess it's my lucky day huh?

Guns are not the problem. Why don't you post the numbers on homicides in general? Knife attacks, beatings, bats, hammers, cars, poison....
Guns will always be here. If not in our hands they will always be owned by criminals. How many murders do you think are committed by legitimate registered gun owners? Why focus on the instrument and not the person? Because of course people are not responsible for crap anymore. There is a syndrome or illness that explains away everything and excuses everything. There is a much deeper issue than guns at play here. First off parents refuse to discipline their children and hold them accountable anymore. This has given us a generation of people that do not recognize consequences of their ways. Second off, our mental health system is shot. Too often doctors dismiss their patients with harsh drugs and refuse to determine the root of the problems. It is very difficult for most hard working people to get mental health care in the first place. And third off, we have let the wealthy business owners and politicians rape our country by extorting every possible resource from it. We have massive layoffs and send our jobs overseas. Heck General Motors took $750 million in TARP funds and built a $750 million dollar plant in Mexico. There are far too many people unemployed for far too long in the US. That causes major stress. Put together a spoiled brat with no proper mental health care and not able to find a job and you have a ticking time bomb.
I will add to the equation that for the last 10 years or so the atheists in this country have pissed and moaned enough that we are finally giving in and have removed God from just about every aspect of public life to keep from offending people. It's odd to me that our government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to refurbish Islamic mosques overseas but we can't even pray a Christian prayer in public anymore. We worship celebrities and have shows called American Idol, but cannot worship God. We were forced to remove Bibles from schools and government buildings. A book that says thou shall not commit murder and shall not lie or steal. Yet we idolize people like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The world stopped turning when Anna Nicole Smith (a porn star) died. You will be hard pressed to turn on a movie or tv show and not see sex, nudity, or killings. I went to the movies and the people in the theater watching Saw were laughing at someone getting heinously murdered.
DO NOT BLAME OUR PROBLEMS ON GUNS
