Bad things happen because of this, for example: For a few hours the wrong person was identified as the Sandy Hook killer Inaccurate details were published about how the shooter got access to the school A bogus statement that the shooter's mother worked at the school was distributed to millions
But frankly - and this will certainly seem callous - the tradeoffs are worth it. The end product is better when you have more people gathering and giving feedback on the news.
