Reports that the Iskander missiles – also known as SS26-Stone missiles –might have been dispatched from Russia to Syria first surfaced on Dec. 9. Sources believe the weapons passed through the port of Tartus on Syria’s Mediterranean coast and have deployed at dual points: 12 facing Turkey on Syria’s northeast border, and 12 facing Jordan and Israel on Syria’s southern border. Just as worrisome for those who fear an escalation could spill over beyond Syria's borders is the fact that a number of other vessels are reportedly on their way to Tartus.
“They (the Russian vessels) are heading to the Syrian coast to assist in a possible evacuation of Russian citizens. Preparations for the deployment were carried out in a hurry and were heavily classified,” Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense have prepared a plan for a large-scale operation to evacuate Russian citizens from Syria. According to the document, rescuers are ready to take around 30,000 Russians out of the dangerous region. In case of an urgent evacuation, planes from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Defense and Aeroflot, as well as passenger ferries and four large navy landing vessels from the Baltic and Black Sea fleets, will take part in the operation.
Russian Navy's interfleet task force will start performing joint tasks off Syria by the end of the year, reported press service of Russian General Staff. "Task units of Northern and Baltic fleets are heading for East Mediterranean to join the task unit of Black Sea Fleet already deployed there. By the end of December, they will meet in the rendezvous point with the view to perform joint tasks near Syrian coast. Warships and auxiliary vessels will call at Russian Navy's maintenance base in Syrian port Tartus many times. Evacuation of Russian citizens from Syria is also possible in case of due order is given", the spokesman told Interfax.
