Game changer : Russian Iskander (SS-26) Mobile Ballistic Missile Delivered to Syria

Reza Khalili reported in World Net Daily on Russian deliveries of the Iskander (SS-26 Stone) Mobile Ballistic Missile to Syria, “Russia arms Syria with powerful ballistic missile,”. The Iskander was developed to foil anti-missile defense systems, whether those deployed in Eastern or Central Europe or the Patriot batteries that NATO has just released to Turkey. The US deployed the first Patriot Batteries to Poland in 2010. Syria has criticized Turkey for this deployment. Kahlili notes the threat that Iskander presents to Israel’s missile defense umbrella in the wake of the recent rocket war in Gaza and successful tests of the David Sling intermediate range rocket and missile defense system. Israel had purchased and deployed Patriot batteries following the Scud attacks from Iraq during the First Gulf War in 1991.

Military Today reported that Russia had invested $1.2 billion in development and deployment to counter US missile shields in Eastern and Central Europe. Moreover, it has sold 26 Iskander missile systems to Syria. Military Today notes the dangerous versatility of the Iskander (SS-26 Stone);

Given the deteriorating situation in Syria, if the Iskander (SS-26 Missiles) were to fall into al Qaeda, al-Husra or Jundallah Islamist militia hands in the fundamentalist opposition that would constitute a serious threat to Israel’s yet to be completed missile defense umbrella. The David’s Sling intermediate range defense system will be deployed in 2013 and 2014.

Well, if the west weren't to clear about which side Russia are batting for and this is true, I think they know now.

Good on them too. In fact send a few more just for good measure.

Syria as is might not have long to live but these offensive weapons sure gonna make someone feels bad being uninvited guests. Heard they are quite accurate with just a CEP of less than 10 metres. Maybe BBC will show us some of those in action.

I don't think Russia are to worried about being condemned.. Actually, its funny that Iran came out with that statement also and look what happens straight after.. Maybe they knew this was on the cards.

Not really, if this is true it is a huge escalation, and a clear line drawn between Syria and NATO/USA.

It brings in a whole new dimension to this conflict. Now you have western backed rebels fighting against Russian backed Assad regime, a dangerous situation with a desperate regime that could unleash an act of vengeance that could be genocidal. You have patriots being deployed in Turkey (a NATO member) and IF this report is true these missiles can be capable of evading the patriots and striking targets in Turkey.

You also have covert Iranian involvement in this conflict...

The Russians have conceded that the Assad regime's days are numbered, they have major interests in Syria including a naval base, they do not want to lose control over their interests, they could care less about being condemned.

They do not want a new regime that is allied with NATO/USA, and that makes this a very dangerous situation.

Proxy war anybody?
Somebody just needs to throw in a couple of nukes to make this real interesting...

They don't need nukes, they have chemical and biological weapons, on both sides, and either side could use them via proxies in staged attacks to make it appear as if it was their enemy's doing.

The rebels want to draw in direct US and NATO involvement against the Assad regime, and may stop at nothing to accomplish their objectives.

It's already dangerous enough without nukes.

It would be best if there was NO outside involvement in this conflict, but it is far too late for that now.

NATO/USA have chosen a side, Iran and Russia have chosen the other apparently.

Which side is the lessor evil here?

Well Russia always opted for dialogue and diplomacy to settle Syria's problem, The West however opted to arm terrorists and make diplomacy impossible.

Hopefully this move by Russia (if true) will make the opposition have another think.

Them Russian's sure can play chess............Check.

The Russians don't want a diplomatic solution in Syria, they want the status quo in Syria.

Depends on your perspective, and which propaganda you have accepted as truth.

The reality is that there have been atrocities committed by both sides in this conflict. If you are looking for the hands with the most blood on them, good luck.

Wait a minute.. The Assad regime wasn't killing thousands of people before foreign mercenaries began invading Syria. The blame cannot be simply put on Assad because the very oppositon which the west is supporting are committing the same atrocities even to the point they are using children to commit war crimes.

Have you heard what the Saudis have been up to? They are releasing prisoners on death row only if they go to Syria and fight with the opposition... The war in Syria is not a civil war.. If the same was to happen in your country, it would be called an invasion. Syria are fighting terrorists and foreign fighters which have hijacked the revolution.

No really, I've seen enough. It is unwise to accept the views of either side in this conflict. It is even more dangerous when nations and international coalitions choose sides in this conflict.

It is almost time for people to wake up and realize just how truly dangerous this can be, not just for the region, but for all of humanity.

What is obviously wrong on this subject is anybody else other than the Syrian people being involved in the change within there government.
