Uh huh. He's dead. We know very little about him and we probably shouldn't speculate.

Yes, this kid went berserk for a reason, but we are never going to know for sure, are we?

Why am I saying this? Because I've spent the day reading pet fantasies about the motive for this incident. This thing has totally consumed a CONSPIRACY website. This isn't a gun control/mass shooting/mental illness website.

This a CONSPIRACY website. Where's the CONSPIRACY?

That is an interesting theory. All those ingredients in a recipe for disaster. I'd take out the fact that he was autistic/asperger's. It kind of demonizes autistics, which is adding stigma and prejudice (and ignorance), to imply that being autistic makes one more prone to murder. I agree with the video game element though.

Video games train people in lifelike scenarios. There is a reason why they have mature ratings. But I don't understand, how a weapon got involved.

There is a family dynamic in this event which is being ignored. His mom worked at the school. His school history and experience could have been a part of things. His brother could have been a part of the problem, although I don't want to put any blame there right now. TV news could have been part of the problem, or as is the case with young men these days, a movie. Maybe he had girlfriend that was part of a problem. There is that thing oddly not present in theories: maybe he had drugs in his system.

There is also the part where he ended his own life, instead of staying around.

Video games didn't do it, a man who liked and wanted violent video games did it then. That would be awesome, if everybody who bought violent video games was on a list, instead of just mentally ill individuals, to help pre-decide who will carry the stigma of potential murderer on them. Oh, and I bet he was a loner, because of the prejudice against autistics already on him. Icing on the cake.

I didn't even know my car could go over 70 miles per hour until I played a racing video game and those video speedometers went over 200! Cars survive that speed, really? (drivers and their wallets don't) So those other numbers aren't for decoration? Imagine the potential!

No, I see people drive like they have been playing too many video games and not enough reality, weaving around, driving in a herd mentality on the freeway, trying to be first in line, driving off the road. Like they can hit the reset button if things get too intense. Meanwhile, I'm in my little reality that says the sign's the limit, acting all civilized. A gamer's life shows in his real life. There is this detachment from consequence in their actions. I could point them out in a crowd; they just don't behave like people with independent minds are around them.

Don't touch the PacMan though. It was Soylent Green that influenced Dahlmer.

There is a reason why some people don't play those realistic shooter games -- so they don't desensitize themselves from the brutality, so they never cross that threshold of their minds, to stay civilized. It takes effort when the pressure is up, when we have to live with one another and not a TV set. Not everybody lives like a superman in their mind, impervious to influence.

We are only human. We are puny mortals.

you must not have a very thorough understanding of autistic spectrum disorders.

the ability to distinguish fantasy from reality is not based on emotional awareness and although we sometimes appear to be lost in our own fantasy world, it's because we can have more fun in our minds, not that we can't tell what's real. hell, we can't stop being aware because our brains have a suppressed ability to filter out our surroundings. besides, we feel emotions very strongly, it's just that we lack the ability to express them in the normal fashion (eye contact, body language, facial expressions, verbal responses, etc)

i will say that everyone on the spectrum feels with extreme passion, tempered by logic. because of this, shootings done by autistics as a sole result of having autism exibit certain characteristics:

1. there is an absolute reason.
2. the person committing the shootings will make sure everyone knows the reason, or else there would be no point.
3. the killings would not be random or all inclusive. they would follow a pattern (such as only the people who bullied them)
4. he probably wouldn't have killed himself, because he would want to be alive to further explain his reasons.

oh, and we like video games (especially online ones) because they put a buffer between us and others that makes us feel more comfortable.

psychology is one of my obsessions, along with theoretical physics and philosophy.

Let's blame video games, guns, music, movies, and anything else that we can think of other than a lack of taking mental health seriously.

I swear the lack of perspective is ridiculous.

Goes to show that sometimes schooling gets in the way of education.

Perhaps the conspiracy is that all the wrong things are purposefully blamed for the aberrant behavior of a small minority of mentally deranged people we have no method of controlling.

Perhaps the conspiracy is a conspiracy of a combination of complacency and ulterior agenda driven politics that spoon feed us tragedy so that we may swallow more regulation on our liberty.

Perhaps the conspiracy is simply that someone has figured out that if you scare the crap out of people enough they will blame anything and everything they can until anything and everything is taken from us via voluntary relinquishment.

I disagree with your acertation.

If the perpetrator of this dreadful crime was so detached from the reality of what he was doing then he would not have then subsequently committed suicide.

I thought the goal of 99% of gun games and fps out there was to survive?? not kill without remorse then kill ones self.

Please reassess.

Yes I totally remember playing that game where you steal guns, shoot your mom, then shoot a bunch of kids and teachers in a school.

It's not until these psychobabble know it alls accept that there is such a thing as evil, that they can even begin to understand what drives these killers.

That all depends on how high functioning the problem is. My husband and son have Aspergers, my husband uscery successful in his job, he is a computer officer at his work. My sonhas a ton of friends and would never hurt anyone. So they both broke your stereotype bull#!

Excuse me? I have to deny this ignorance...I have autism; I fall between Aspergers and Autistic Savant. My IQ is over 180; I skipped the whole last section and achieved that score. I graduated College with every Honor at a 3.98 in Engineering. My son is 14 he also has Autism; he is already taking college classes his lowest score on his last college final was a 98.

I do believe people need to reassess their ignorance. Especially when; its a topic they know nothing about. People naturally distrust autistic people; because it is difficult for autistic's to look others in the eyes. It can be learned...while "normal" kids are obsessing about shoes and other material nonsense...autistic's are obsessing over knowledge. We don't lack empathy...we lack compassion. We can feel your pain...but if someone knows drinking and driving is wrong and does it anyway...why console that person? They knew the possible consequences of their actions and did it anyway. So do people with aspergers; but they think of ll the repercussions of their actions; from every angle with logic, and rationality.

The DSM did not even classify aspergers; until a few years ago. Some of the same social deficits are found in schizophrenia...many autistic people were misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia; on purpose, because there were no diagnostic standards for which to label it...so lets take a person that would sooner harm themselves than another; the same as an individual that hears voices; sees things that are not there etc....just so this individual's family can pay for their health care; which needs what? A diagnoses so imagine that.

Not all of this jumbled data...and doctors that do not stay tuned to their respective fields; wants to classify autistic's yet again as schizophrenics. This man should be fired; and his license revoked until he takes refresher courses, because he is at least 10 years behind in his field of respected study. He is no authority on the subject; he is lax in current diagnostic data; therefore his statements are benign and bear zero weight. But I suppose DR. carries weight with the uneducated. Oh they are a DR; they must know? Subjects move and grow everyday; in depth and understanding. Sit on your laurels and do not keep up with the current research? Perhaps he would be best suited for a PHD in history instead.

I did not mean to sound so hard on you OP; but question your sources...and do the research just in case your sources do not. Good day!

211 million Americans played video games this year.

97% of children play video games.

61% of children played violent video games.

The biggest percentage of people who play video games are in their 30's.

If video games were a related thing, there would be people going on shooting sprees all the damn time.

The description of that killer who is anti-social, didn't like social interactions, plays video's games constantly, has no facebook page, has no real friends where he lived, is basically a description of me. And i have played violent video games my whole life. But damn I hate violence in the real world. I wont stand for it. I wouldn't hurt a fly. well maybe a fly and some ants, but even then i try to step over them on footpaths to avoid crushing them.

This video game link after every shooting is stupid and sooo old! There is no evidence.

If you wonder where i got those percentages, do a google search of "percentage of people who play violent video games"

I am surprised to see so many responses.

Those of you who think violent video games do not influence behavior are wrong.
It desensitizes one to violence, The only one you are fooling by saying it doesn't is yourself.

As far as aspergers. I love having high functioning aspergers in my classes. They are wonderful people, tend to sit in the front row and pay rapt attention. This man obviously wasn't functional by most accounts.

I was saying it was a combination of an emotional disorder and violent video games that allowed this poor man to believe this behavior was acceptable. Once he realized it wasn't and what he had actually done, he killed himself.

Who is to blame? Many are asking. The answer is myriad, poor parenting that allowed him to play the games for way too many hours per day. His underlying emotional disorder. Television, movies, yes there are plenty of studies that prove this is true. I saw a show yesterday where the "good guys" stood around joking over the bodies of the 5 people they just killed. Evil, of course which is rampant in our society and sanctioned in TV, movies, and video games. Lastly, the guy just plain snapped.

Should we lock up people for having one of these "symptoms", of course not. These things happen, people snap. Like the guy in the Philippines who killed 10 people with a knife at about the same time this happened. These awful things will happen, we can't predict who will and won't, can't lock them up for something we "think" they might do when most of the time we'll be wrong. Get rid of guns? Get rid of knives? Get rid of access to chemicals in everyday products that could be made into gas?

Evil happens. It always has and it always will. So sad, very very sad, but true.

Autistic's are aware of themselves and what they are doing; black outs and moments of clarity happen in a delusional psychotic episode...if this person had a mental issue; it was a type of schizophrenia or sub type, sociopath, or antisocial personality disorder.

Autistic's are not manipulative; I wouldn't even know how to begin to control or manipulate someone; that requires well honed social skills; that just aren't there. Can autistic's be manipulated? You bet our intentions are pure; so we have other blindness; and think others intentions are pure also...i suppose gullible suffices, for the best descriptor.

On another note; for someone to become violent from a video game; they would have to identify with the character, then they would have to emulate the character, then they would have loss of self between themselves and the character at some point in this cycle; the person has entered into a delusional state. I have never been delusional; I have been out of sorts; from too much sensual stimulation, without the ability to filter it. If an autistic is forced to stay in such a situation over whelmed; then over course they will fight, or exhibit some violence; only in an attempt of self preservation...because they are not allowed flight; from an overwhelming situation.

How about perpetual procrastination? That an unmentioned symptom of autism. Always looking for the best possible answer in a myriad of conflicting information; we wish order not chaos, we seek knowledge to have the best possible answer and rational action possible its a compulsion to seek order. This shooting was an act of chaos...an impossibility for an autistic to deal with, an illness always seeking to remove chaos and disorder, escape chaos and disorder...creating it on purpose? Sorry, that block will not fit into the slot you are trying to hammer it into...

The responses; that you are so surprised by, the majority are letting you know you could not be more wrong. I do believe if you spent some time back in psych 101; you would see that correlation does not equal cause and effect; and that's what your "theory is" a correlative speculation. That has no foundation upon which to stand.

My apologies for the confusion in the first post; I only got to the second break before I had to let you know just how wrong you are in in your determination. If you cannot see it; then perhaps you are in denial; or feel some superiority on the subject itself, and refuse to see the obvious; that is not speculation.

Without being autistic yourself; and claiming this person that ripped these children's lives from them so early is autistic or anything else for that matter. You are creating victims just like him; who do we attack? Autistic's, who do we blame? That is a witch hunt. How about blaming the shooter; and the poor choices this person made? There have been enough victims already in this sad tragedy. The choice to do or not do is an individual decision regardless of any previous influence. There is no such thing as the devil made me do it...free will exists its not a fantasy.

Once again you push the "fact" that violent video games desensitize people. Where are your links to the studies that prove it? Or should we just take your word for it?

I follow these types of studies because I am interested in childhood development. It was a required minor while I was an in undergrad education program. Most of these studies have proven inconclusive one way or another. They don't "train" kids to do anything.

Just because you are stuck in a 50's mindset does not make your statements valid. I actually argue that your whole argument is invalid because it lacks resources and clinical studies.

This kid was a sociopath that was already off the deep end, guessing by the way that he went into an elementary school and ended so many young lives. It's another random act of violence. To try to put the blame on one outlet of media is irresponsible.

I see far worse pictures in the evening news everyday. Check there first before you blame something that has no proven clinical studies to show whether or not it heightens one's propensity for violence.

Random act of violence. Nothing more, nothing less.

He was a liar. He was manipulating his interviewer. This is common knowledge among those who know about Bundy. The interviewer came because Bundy was spouting that crap to get him there. Bundy craved attention and toward the end of his life he was even trying to say he "heard voices" to get an insanity out. He was a master manipulator. If you see a video of him saying the sky is blue then you better go check. Never believe a word that exited his mouth.

Videogames?

Wow you're that guy. The guy who blames movies, games and everything under the sun, but not the parents.

Videogames are great. So is the freedom to play them. Stop being fascist and looking for excuses that aren't there. Tragedies happen whether there are xboxes or not.
