Up until late yesterday there was still confusion as to what guy's name was.

I'm thinking that unless you have some info about case the rest of the general public does not have then its probably waaay too early to be making hypotheses.

I'm pretty sure we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things , but you could be right on the video games . I think it was before WW II the military used to train recruits on round bulls-eye targets . Range scores were great , but when the new boots got to the front lines they did rather poorly . When they changed to simple human silhouette targets battlefield kills increased dramatically . That was all it took , getting people used to shooting at a simple human shape apparently made it a lot easier to kill a real human .

Or maybe games had nothing at all to do with it and that he played all day because he already had issues.
Don't see why everything has to be blamed on games.

I guess we should lock up everyone that is autistic and ban video games...

I'm sorry that you are blind to the truth. Let me guess, he was a tramatized mentally unstable kid, who had no mom or dad to love him, he could'nt deal with the world or the world he created for himself so he went off the deep end and killed 20 innocent kids. If that is not evil what do you call it. In time the "mythical" creature will expose himself, and all of those who do not believe in "fairy tales" will be sad that they did not. I will not leave because you told me to, I do not work that way. I will stand my ground as I always do, faith unwavering.

PLPL

I see from your other threads you do not believe in God, there are to many people like you, effected or should I say infected with spiritual deprivation. I hope one day you learn the truth, the nice way, not the hard way.

Surely makes sense it was the devil and not just mental issues...

Gotta love the logical thinking of religious nuts...

High end autistics tend to do poorly socially from their overly-logical view of their world. They're the last people to get duped from a game and slaughter kids. This stuff reminds me of when I was young and people thought kids did terrible things because of Ozzy Osbourne music.

Give me a break, if someone is that unstable would they not be committed. Are there not obvious signs of a troubled person. So then who do we blame??? Society, no wait mental disorders, no wait poor parenting, no wait bullies. He was a functioning and capable person who had enough know how to pre- meditate his actions. He let evil in, liked the feeling of power it gave him, went out caused chaos, then killed himself. He realized after all was done he was wrong and took his own life, he lost the feeling of power because it left. Evil used him to do its bidding then left when the job was done, leaving him with the repercussions. How come people can believe in mind controlling devices used by the government but can not wrap their head around evil. It is real, it is here, and its mission is to take down as many people as it can, in anyway it can.

You're theory is pretty lame. Asperger folk are NOT delusional; they have a different operating system than "neurotypicals." That doesn't make them less, just different. The shooter had something else going on since autism/Aspergers doesn't make you violent like this. How about staying away from generalizations and scapegoating.

There is a lot of speculation on what caused the shooter to explode like that. As a former professor of Psychology and of Human Development I have a hypothesis.

The shooter was autistic/aspergers. These people have extremely poor social skills and emotionally frequently operate at a very low (ie young child) level. Children can not tell the difference between reality and fantasy until around the ages of 6-8, about the time they catch on that Santa isn't real. My hypothesis is the shooter's emotional intelligence was below that threshold.

Many have said he spent most of his time playing video games. We know that if you immerse soldiers in realistic video games they will perform with less remorse and feeling on the battlefield, there is plenty of research to back that up.

So this man was emotionally crippled and most likely below the emotional level of understanding the difference between immersive fantasy and reality. Add to that video games which lower the threshold of understanding and feeling even lower and WHAM. You have a person who when the right "trigger" comes along acts out the fantasies he has been engaging in day after day, hour after hour, without really realizing the difference between fantasy and the reality of what he is doing. He just acts automatically as the games have trained him to do with no empathy or understanding that the children were people with feelings which he didn't have and so could not relate to.

His mother had the "fantasy" guns available, there was a trigger and he went to a place where he knew there would be a lot of targets and played his game to act out his triggered rage. That's my hypothesis.

Here we go again.. "Video Games kill people" crap.. I bet you think Dungeons and Dragons is for Satanic people too. eh? lol.. That is very ignorant thinking friend. The nutcase did the killing. If this losers mind was so weak that a video game could cause him to want to kill, he should have been put in a hospital and locked away...

The TRUE problem is DENIAL of mental illness. Family and friends are so afraid to bring it up, they end up not getting their family member/friend help, and this person goes on to kill or do harm.

there is a difference between not believing in a "god" or that there may be something going on here in the universe.

AND

blindly believing the belief system of ignorant people thousands of years ago. a belief system that has been used to control people and slow the advancement of the human race. Why exactly is your religion right and other religions aren't? you really honestly believe you have this whole universe figured out eh? that would be the height or arrogance.

but whatever, enjoy the false security blanket that your beliefs provide

Violent entertainment can indeed affect the way a person reacts.

Well, just commercials can affect a person. If that wasn't the case there wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar industry built around airing 30 second commercials on TV. It is funny to see how the networks air commercials which are targeted at influencing people, and then yet say the entertainment played in between their commercial breaks has no influence on anyone.

??

hehe.

Anyway, you also have to realize that society will never get better as long as Satan and his wicked demons are around the Bible foretold these things. There are dark and evil powers behind the scenes which are controlling things. It won't be until God's kingdom comes that there will be real peace.

And to you I say shake that monkey off your back, it does not suit you well.
PLPL.

I do not have a religion so to speak, I know my father. He happens to be yours to, regardless if you want him or not. There is knowledge of God in all religions if you look close enough.

Wow...you mean, they made the training more efficient and they got results to prove it??

I have to say that it would have to be someone really really screwed in the head to mistake video games with real life. I don't believe video games cause violent behavior, I've played them my whole life and I am nowhere close to wanting to kill anyone. That also includes mixing real life vs video game world.

I think this video is pretty good at explaining it.

There's even studies that prove they help in releasing aggression. Like porn reduces rapes.

Blah - tired of the video games, lack of religion, violent movies excuse. I grew up playing violent games, didn't go to church and watched violent movies - I would like to think I am a well rounded individual.

Thing is parents gave up raising their kids. Let the tv, internet, games raise them. Little or no interaction goes on with parents children....and as to mental issues, perhaps instead of just looking to drugs to correct things, perhaps society should look at WHY children these days are increasingly suffering from mental disorders.

(not to mention that many parents are raising little entitled brats these days, who can not take any criticism)

OP, youre not qualified to lick a stamp apparently. Youve confirmed your incredible ignorance and pissed off : ME... the parent of an aspie who is in college and successful ( and plays that scary xbox) .. and a whole hell of a lot of ATSers who are aspies and/or fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. You have NO idea what youre talking about. DId you know his mental issues arent even confirmed? That his behavior is NOT fitting an "aspie"?? Nahh, say whatever that pops into that widdle head I suppose for whatever agenda or witch hunt you want to round up the posse for.

Now Ive stayed silent throughout this whole nonsense and moronic posting Ive seen here so far concerning this tragedy, but Im not going to let a witch hunt ( or offensive idiocy) go without saying something. You will not be allowed to marginalize anyone here without owning your words now and later. You can take your ignorance and gross hubris and be known by it now. Just another ignorant know it all pretending to be something they arent on ATS... as if we arent already inundated by your breed.

Hey Doc, guess what? The DSM-5 is removing Aspergers syndrome. I guess your qualifications havent exposed you to the DSM or its revisions. Might want to check into things and realize others on ATS arent idiots who will buy into your BS. Ive just about had it with you armchair psychiatrists here.

It isn't all people that are affected by these games. There are some people that do though. Some people I have known have changed there life to a soap opera from watching them. Others have watched TV and changed their lifestyle from what they perceived. Everyone is changed by what they hear and see, even if we don't know it. We can be steered easily to change society. Some people believe in the brainwashing techniques, look at all the turmoil over politics. Get a few people to reinforce your beliefs and trouble can occur. It can work the opposite way also, training us to desire a certain type of work can lead us down a good path.

I'm figuring the dude was at his end anyway, because his life was an utter failure, and the only attention he ever got was negative, so in his mind he saw an opportunity to live forever through his deed by shocking the world , because the media would make him famous, and he could kill his abusive mother, plus destroy her reputation by creating a monster that killed her school children. if anything it was revenge.

LOL, not video games man. Lack of parenting. Most parents sit their kids in front of the babysitter (PC or video games) instead of taking the time to F with them and teach them real world and family values.

Pick up a baseball and some gloves and teach your kids something good for a change, or a football or maybe go buy a basketball goal and shoot some hoops with them, let your kids know you actually give a damn about them.
